Applications of Copulas to Analysis of Efficiency of Weather Derivatives as Primary Crop Insurance InstrumentsFilonov, Vitaly 2011 August 1900 (has links)
Numerous authors note failure of private insurance markets to provide affordable and comprehensive crop insurance. Economic logic suggests that index contracts potentially may have some advantages when compared with traditional (farm based) crop insurance. It is also a matter of common knowledge that weather is an important production factor and at the same time one of the greatest sources of risk in agriculture. Hence introduction of crop insurance contracts, based on weather indexes, might be a reasonable approach to mitigate problems, associated with traditional crop insurance products, and possibly lower the cost of insurance for end users.
In spite of the fact that before the financial crisis of 2008-09 market for weather derivatives was the fastest growing derivatives market in the USA, agricultural producers didn’t express much interest in application of weather derivatives to management of their systematic risk. There are several reasons for that, but the most important one is the presence of high basis risk, which is represented by its two major components: technological (i.e. goodness of fit between yield and weather index) and geographical basis. Majority of the researchers is focusing either on pricing of weather derivatives or on mitigation of geographical basis risk. At the same time the number of papers researching possible ways to decrease technological basis is quite limited, and always assumes linear dependency between yields and weather variables, while estimating the risk reducing efficiency of weather contracts, which is obviously large deviation from reality.
The objective of this study is to estimate the risk reducing efficiency of crop insurance contracts, based on weather derivatives (indexes) in the state of Texas. The distributions of representative farmer’s profits with the proposed contracts are compared to the distributions of profits without a contract. This is done to demonstrate the risk mitigating effect of the proposed contracts. Moreover the study will try to account for a more complex dependency structures between yields and weather variables through usage of copulas, while constructing joint distribution of yields and weather data. Selection of the optimal copula will be implemented in the out-of-sample efficient framework. An effort will be done to identify the most relevant periods of year, when weather has the most significant influence on crop yields, which should be included in the model, and to discover the most effective copula to model joint weather/yield risk.
Results suggest that effective insurance of crop yields in the state of Texas by the means of proposed weather derivatives is possible. Besides, usage of data-mining techniques allows for more accurate selection of the time periods to be included in the model than ad hoc procedure previously used in the literature. Finally selection of optimal copula for modeling of joint weather/yield distribution should be crop and county specific, while in general Clayton and Frank copula of Archimedean copula family provide the best out-of-sample metric results.

Data Path Implementation for a Spatially Programmable Architecture Customized for Image Processing ApplicationsJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: The last decade has witnessed a paradigm shift in computing platforms, from laptops and servers to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. These devices host an immense variety of applications many of which are computationally expensive and thus are power hungry. As most of these mobile platforms are powered by batteries, energy efficiency has become one of the most critical aspects of such devices. Thus, the energy cost of the fundamental arithmetic operations executed in these applications has to be reduced. As voltage scaling has effectively ended, the energy efficiency of integrated circuits has ceased to improve within successive generations of transistors. This resulted in widespread use of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC), which provide incredible energy efficiency. However, these are not flexible and have high non-recurring engineering (NRE) cost. Alternatively, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) offer flexibility to implement any application, but at the cost of higher area and energy compared to ASIC.
In this work, a spatially programmable architecture customized for image processing applications is proposed. The intent is to bridge the efficiency gap between ASICs and FPGAs, by offering FPGA-like flexibility and ASIC-like energy efficiency. This architecture minimizes the energy overheads in FPGAs, which result from the use of fine-grained programming style and global interconnect. It is flexible compared to an ASIC and can accommodate multiple applications.
The main contribution of the thesis is the feasibility analysis of the data path of this architecture, customized for image processing applications. The data path is implemented at the register transfer level (RTL), and the synthesis results are obtained in 45nm technology cell library from a leading foundry. The results of image-processing applications demonstrate that this architecture is within a factor of 10x of the energy and area efficiency of ASIC implementations. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2016

Energy Performance Analysis of Ultra-Efficient Homes at Solar Decathlon 2013January 2014 (has links)
abstract: The objective of this thesis is to investigate the various types of energy end-uses to be expected in future high efficiency single family residences. For this purpose, this study has analyzed monitored data from 14 houses in the 2013 Solar Decathlon competition, and segregates the energy consumption patterns in various residential end-uses (such as lights, refrigerators, washing machines, ...). The analysis was not straight-forward since these homes were operated according to schedules previously determined by the contest rules. The analysis approach allowed the isolation of the comfort energy use by the Heating, Venting and Cooling (HVAC) systems. HVAC are the biggest contributors to energy consumption during operation of a building, and therefore are a prime concern for energy performance during the building design and the operation. Both steady state and dynamic models of comfort energy use which take into account variations in indoor and outdoor temperatures, solar radiation and thermal mass of the building were explicitly considered. Steady State Inverse Models are frequently used for thermal analysis to evaluate HVAC energy performance. These are fast, accurate, offer great flexibility for mathematical modifications and can be applied to a variety of buildings. The results are presented as a horizontal study that compares energy consumption across homes to arrive at a generic rather than unique model - to be used in future discussions in the context of ultra efficient homes. It is suggested that similar analyses of the energy-use data that compare the performance of variety of ultra efficient technologies be conducted to provide more accurate indications of the consumption by end use for future single family residences. These can be used alongside the Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) and the Leading Indicator for Remodeling Activity (LIRA) indices to assist in planning and policy making related to residential energy sector. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Investigating human pharmaceutical compounds present in municipal and hospital wastewaters and options for their removalAl Qarni, Hamed M. January 2015 (has links)
Pharmaceutical compounds comprise a wide range of substances that are consumed in large quantities by modern societies and are generally released into local sewer networks through excretion. This research aimed to identify the factors affecting the removal efficiencies of these compounds in biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) under different environmental conditions. Of the pharmaceutical compounds selected for this study, the highest influent concentrations measured in municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWWTPs) were for paracetamol, naproxen and bezafibrate (> 1 μg/L), followed by carbamazepine, atenolol, lidocaine, sulfamethoxazole and NACS (<1 μg/L). In hospital wastewater treatment plants (HWWTPs), the highest concentrations measured were for paracetamol and caffeine (> 10 μg/L), followed by ciprofloxacin and NACS (1–6 μg/L), and finally bezafibrate, carbamazepine, atenolol, lidocaine, clarithromycin and sulfamethoxazole (< 1μg/L). Antibiotic drugs were detected in HWWTPs, but rarely detected in MWWTPs. In general, the hospital wastewaters contained relatively higher levels of pharmaceuticals than municipal wastewaters. The removal efficiencies of the pharmaceutical compounds ranged widely. This was found to be related to characteristics and operational parameters of the individual WWTPs. The MWWTPs that utilized long aeration and biomass retention times (HRT,SRT), as evidenced by the occurrence of complete nitrification, were more efficient at removing paracetamol, naproxen, bezafibrate and atenolol, than the non-nitrifying plants with relatively shorter HRT and SRT. HWWTPs that operated under elevated ambient temperatures (> 26°C) achieved higher removal efficiencies (90%) for several compounds, including paracetamol, caffeine, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, clarithromycin, NACS, atenolol, carbamazepine and lidocaine. In addition to the elevated ambient temperatures, elevated HRT and SRT and less dilution can lead to increased active biomass and can result in higher removal rates for the pharmaceutical compounds. Overall, the removal efficiencies of pharmaceuticals in WWTPs have been correlated to the type of treatment plant, the plants’ operational parameters (HRT, SRT), the climatic conditions (temperature and dilution effect of rainfall) and characteristics of the micropollutants (type and concentration). Aerobic and anaerobic batch biodegradation experiments were conducted to observe the removal of paracetamol, naproxen, ibuprofen and sulfamethoxazole at various SRTs. The biodegradation rates varied widely ranging from poor, to moderate, to high, depending on the SRT. Paracetamol was highly biodegradable under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Sulfamethoxazole was poorly biodegradable under aerobic conditions but highly biodegradable under anaerobic conditions. Relatively slow biodegradation rates were observed for ibuprofen and naproxen under both conditions; longer microbial adaptation periods for these two compounds were probably required. The most important factor affecting the removal of the compounds was the SRT. Therefore, the conclusion was drawn that combining anaerobic and aerobic systems with longer SRT and HRT could bring about significant reductions in the emissions of these contaminants into the environment via WWTPs; this is also a cost-effective option.
