Res publica constituta : Actium, Apollo and the accomplishment of the triumviral assignment

Lange, Carsten Hjort January 2008 (has links)
This thesis will focus on the battle of Actium and the ways in which the Caesarian regime represented and commemorated this conflict and turned it to Octavian/Augustus's purpose. It will be argued that Actium was relatively more important than Alexandria in the ideology of the regime, but at the same time that the two battles must be understood together, as part of the accomplishment of the assignment of the triumvirate (constituting the res publica to order and ending the civil war). The focus will thus be on the period between 43-27 BC. It will be suggested that the powers given back to the Senate and Roman people in 27 BC were in fact the powers of the triumvirate. The arrangements of 28-27 BC thus constitute the accomplishment of the triumviral assignment. It will be stressed that, according to the regime, Apollo had a major role to play in this development, helping Octavian to win the battle of Actium. There are many possible themes that could have been exploited, but the nexus of Actium, Apollo, civil war and peace all centre round the triumvirate and triumviral assignment. There is a generally held consensus amongst scholars that Actium was presented as a foreign war and that Octavian/Augustus tried to conceal that it was in fact a civil war. This thesis will reflect on the issue and challenge this consensus. Antonius decided to make war on his own country and thus a foreign war turned into a civil war. Similarly, it is more or less universally held that the battle of Actium was decided due to a prearranged battle plan by Antonius and Cleopatra; from the outset they wanted to flee. Instead it will be argued that it is much more likely that the battle was decided by Cleopatra's treachery.

The numerical weather prediction system at the Italian Air Force Weather Service impact of non-conventional observations and increased resolution

Torrisi, Lucio. 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for Public Release; Distribution is Unlimited / The impact of non-conventional observations and increased horizontal resolution on the numerical weather prediction (NWP) system of the National Center for Aeronautic Meteorology and Climatology of the Italian Air Force (CNMCA) has been investigated. The present study is part of ongoing research activities whose goal is the improvement of CNMCA's operational numerical weather prediction capabilities through the assimilation of non-conventional observations. Additional data derived from satellite observations, such as 10 m wind retrieved from Quikscat polar-orbit satellite, atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) from Meteosat geostationary satellites and manual and automated aircraft observations were used. The NWP system, which is in operational use, is based on an "observation space" version of the 3D-Var method for the objective analysis component (3D-PSAS), while the prognostic component is based on the High Resolution Regional Model (HRM) of the German Meteorological Service (DWD). The analysis and forecast fields derived from the NWP system were objectively evaluated through comparisons with radiosonde and conventional surface observations. Comparisons with parallel runs of the HRM model starting from the 3D-Var operational analysis have showed that each of those observations have a measurable positive impact on forecast skill. / Captain, Italian Air Force

Transitions in Medieval Mediterranean Shipbuilding: A Reconstruction of the Nave Quadra of the Michael of Rhodes Manuscript

Valenti, Vincent N. 14 January 2010 (has links)
The subject of shipbuilding in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages is an integral aspect of the maritime history of this region. Characterized primarily by a fundamental shift in shipbuilding techniques, this phase also included significant developments in other seafaring practices. Yet, unlike the preceding Byzantine era, there is a very limited body of archaeological evidence available for study which can be utilized to illustrate these changes. Therefore, one must turn to alternative sources of information regarding the construction of ships in the Mediterranean, such as iconography and literary evidence. Perhaps the most informative and useful example of the latter is the group of nautically-themed treatises and manuscripts composed between the 14th and 16th centuries. The earliest of these to describe ship construction in any detail is the 1434 manuscript of Michael of Rhodes, which will serve as the main subject of study for this thesis. The primary purpose of this research is to propose a reconstruction of the nave quadra described in the manuscript, though this will be preceded by explanations of several topics pertinent to ship construction in the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. The discussion of such fundamental issues, like the transition from shell-based to frame- based construction and the concept of recording and conveying these processes in a didactic manner, is essential in providing a basis for this study. Once this foundation has been established, it will then be possible to present the reconstruction of the nave quadra of the Michael of Rhodes manuscript. With this background information laid out, the significance of both the manuscript and the nave quadra in the broader context of medieval seafaring in the Mediterranean should be discernable. In addition to the proposed reconstruction, this task of elucidating key aspects such as the transition from one construction technique to another and the compilation of written material on this subject will be essential to providing as comprehensive a picture of medieval seafaring in the Mediterranean as possible.
