An Explication of the Writings on the Bhagvad Gītā in the Published Works of Simone Weil

Hendricks, Norman 05 1900 (has links)

Simone Weil's writings on the Bhagavad Gītā are, for the most part, scattered throughout her notebooks, posthumously published under the title Cahiers. The present study is an attempt to gather her references and notes on the Gītā and to present them as a coherent whole. It is an attempt to make clear from other of her writings what she meant in her references to this classic scripture of the Indian religious tradition and to see her interpretation of it in terms of the rest of her thought. It is not a critical analysis of her interpretation. The question of the validity of what she says about this text, and, indeed, of the Indian religious tradition as a whole, will be left to a further study.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

The Place of Risk in Kierkegaard's Understanding of Commitment

Brown, Grant C. 09 1900 (has links)

This thesis is an attempt to analyze the relationship that exists between the concepts of risk and commitment in the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard. Against the background of the "stage of existence", it seeks to illuminate Kierkegaard's understanging of the risks involved in moving from one stage of existence to another, and to show that risk is a necessary element in commitment as the latter concept is understood by Kierkegaard. The author after introducing Kierkegaard's thought concerning the stages of existence, proceeds to examine in detail the specific risks involved in moving by means of commitment to the ethical, relgious and Christian stages of existence. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the relevance for today's world of Kierkegaard's understanding of commitment.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

The incomprehension of the Disciples in the Marcan Redaction

Hawkin, John David 11 1900 (has links)

This inquiry is conducted from the standpoint of Redaktionsgeschichte: Attention is focused on the gospel framework and the articulation of traditions in order to formulate the theological position of the Evangelist.

The study seeks to discover the exact purpose which governed Mark's representation of the disciples as uncomprehending in the redaction of his Gospel. It begins by examining the problem of interpretation which is evident from the history of Marcan scholarship. It then examines the symbolism and structure of the redaction with a view to uncovering themes and motifs which hopefully give an insight into Mark's intentions in writing.

The conclusion maintains that the motif of the incomprehension of the disciples is very significant in the understanding of the Second Gospel. It is typology per contrarius which sets into sharper focus what the christian catechuren must understand to be initiated into the Mystery of Christ.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

MARTIN HEIDEGGER'S THE QUESTION ABOUT TECHNIC - A TRANSLATION AND COMMENTARY

Alexander, Edwin M. 05 1900 (has links)

It might be asked as to whether or not the translator has a muse. The question must seem at first to be an impossibility: the translator is only a technician, a correlator of existing thoughts and words, or even worse:

Such is our pride, our folly and our fate, That only those who cannot write, translate.

Yet in an undertaking such as the one at hand, the translation of the words of a man which are so profoundly difficult in his own language, one must have a trust in even the impossible.

Muse or no muse, I hereby renounce full credit for the translation which follows and acknowledge my great debt to the students of Religion 775 of 1970 and 1972 whose questionings were responsible for innumerable revisions both of particular passages and words and of the general tone and understanding of the entire lecture 0 And of course to George Grant, who conceived of this translation, inspired it, and without whose 'invaluable - understandings and criticisms this undertaking would have been but half what it is at present.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Socinianism, the Enlightenment, and Voltaire: A Preliminary Historical Study of the Socinians, of their Influence on the Origins of the Enlightenment, and of their Place in the Life and Works of Voltaire from 1694 to 1734

Florida, Edwin Robert 05 1900 (has links)

This thesis has three major goals: first, to present a historical sketch of the Socinian movement, and second, to show how Socinian thought influenced the climate of opinion around the beginning of the eighteenth century. The third and major portion of this work traces the influence of Socinianism on Voltaire in the first part of his life (1694-1734). Both his biography and works are examined in detail for evidence of Socinianism. OEdipe, the Fête de Bélébat, the Henriade, the Epitre a Uranie, and above all the Lettres philosophiques are the primary works analyzed.
/ Master of Arts (MA)
