The Study of E-Shop branding --- An Example of Online Beauty Store

The spread and development of the Internet has not been last a long time, however, a plethora of global famous brands have been established, twisting it from the ever glooming situation to a dominant role in our life. Before that, an brand building takes time, but on the contrary, now an Internet brand takes only a few months to become a strong brand. This can be indicated from the census conducted by the Interbrand. Therefore, the subject of the research is to see how to build a Internet brand and hope this will benefit those interested with the management of a virtual store. The target of the research includes online beauty shop in Taiwan and U.S, to see how they build a successful virtual store brand and to compare the differences of the development history between those U.S and Taiwan virtual stores. The research adopts case study research, and after serious interviewing with each individual case of corporation, the following conclusion has been made that: 1. Customer management: to establish an encouragement mechanism for both new customers and frequent customers;; making good use of database in order to raise the loyalty of customers. 2. Website Establishment: a good virtual store is always easy to browse and providing an attractive user interface; making the style be able to reflect the core value Of the corporation. 3. Marketing Activities: no matter what kind of marketing activities, new idea and innovation is necessary. 4. Strategic Alliance: by means of strategic alliances to improve the brand¡¦s resource and power. 5. Core Value: to develop a unique characteristic and activity to provide core value for customers. 6. Trusted Transaction Mechanism¡G clearly claim the information, privacy policy, transaction methods and shopping routine, making customers have great shopping experience.

The economics of beautification and beauty

The first chapter examines adolescent beauty as a potential originator of the observed wage premium for adult beauty and finds that adolescent beauty has its own separate effect on adult wages. Adolescent beauty also affects early human capital development, as evidenced by its significant impact on educational outcomes. Changes in beauty over time are shown to be positively correlated with changes in wages for full-time workers, and changes in beauty are generally not correlated with appearance-related choice variables. I explore the possibility that self-confidence and social capital are potential mechanisms through which adolescent attractiveness affects future wages but find that these do not change the magnitude of the effects of adolescent beauty, although they are of themselves significant determinants of wages. The second chapter examines the effects of personal grooming behaviors on earnings and shows evidence that these effects are due to persistent differences in preferences or productivity between workers displaying different grooming choices and not statistical discrimination on the part of employers. In a longitudinal sample of lawyers graduating from the same law school, men who wear glasses and men with facial hair face an earnings penalty in first-year income and to some extent in subsequent years. Some grooming behaviors are positively correlated with income in the 1970's cohort and negatively correlated with income in the 1980's cohort (and vice versa), suggesting that fashion signals change relatively quickly. I also find that grooming behaviors are correlated with beauty ratings and that the beauty premium is unaffected by earnings, but the estimated effects of some grooming behaviors partially result from their correlation with beauty. I do not find evidence that grooming behaviors act as a signaling mechanism in the labor market. The third chapter evaluates the claim that design piracy is beneficial to certain status-goods firms. It builds on Pesendorfer's model of fashion cycles by introducing the possibility of design imitation for a market in which designs are used as a signaling mechanism. There exist equilibria in which both the designer and imitator are active in the market, but there are no conditions under which imitation is profitable to the designer. Under some conditions the presence of a potential imitator will ensure that the designer does not produce at all. / text

On Gilded Ugliness: Donatello's Penitent Magdalen and Issues of Beauty, Sanctity, and Sexuality in Fifteenth Century Florence

The sins of the flesh and the mortification of the flesh characterize the biography of the saint known as Mary Magdalen. The polychrome wooden sculpture by Donatello from c.1455 was described by Vasari as: “wasted away by her fastings and abstinence." The extreme emaciation of the figure contrasts with the image of the beautiful and mournful Magdalen frequently seen at the foot of the cross in medieval crucifixion scenes. With virtually no documentation concerning its commission, much of the scholarship on this particular piece focuses on dating and the intended installation site. This thesis aims to examine the relationship between the emaciated style and the manner of polychromy in Donatello’s Penitent Magdalen as an example of the redeeming power of penance. On a figure known for a life of sin and prostitution but also redemption, the gilding juxtaposed with a haggard and ugly body creates a dynamic relationship between sanctity and beauty (or the lack thereof) and demonstrates the effect of penance on the sinner. The extreme emaciation and rough finish of the piece, in tandem with the gilding of the hair, created an effect of light that was significant to the Renaissance understanding of the saint’s character but also to a larger discourse on female sexuality and spirituality. The multifaceted character of Mary Magdalen and Donatello’s depiction of her was understood by Quattrocento Florentines on a variety of levels. Higher social classes would readily grasp the sculpture’s affinity with Petrarchan tropes and philosophical ideas, particularly in terms of light imagery and descriptions of love. But the average viewer would also make more prosaic associations between the figure of the Magdalen and popular preaching and prostitution. Through an examination of the cultural climate of fifteenth century Florence, this investigation will situate Donatello’s uniquely emaciated and gilded sculpture in the visual tradition of Magdalen imagery, motifs of female spirituality in Donatello’s career, the literary tradition of describing female beauty, and societal concerns about prostitution and female sexuality. / Thesis (Master, Art History) -- Queen's University, 2008-09-26 21:24:46.128
