Bringing Books to the Public: British Intellectual Weekly Periodicals, 1918-1939

Dickens, Mary Elizabeth 15 February 2011 (has links)
My dissertation investigates the role of intellectual weekly periodicals such as the Nation and Athenaeum and the New Statesman as mediators between the book trade and the audience for so-called serious books. The weeklies offer a productive lens through which to examine the labels commonly applied to early twentieth-century intellectual culture. The rise of a mass reading public and the proliferation of print in this period necessitated cultural labels with a sorting function: books, periodicals, and people were designated as "highbrow," "middlebrow," "modernist," "Georgian," "Bloomsbury." Through an analysis of the intellectual weeklies, a periodical genre explicitly devoted to the appraisal of intellectual culture, I argue for a critical revaluation of cultural labels as they were used in the early twentieth century and as they have been adopted in later scholarship. Using quantitative methodologies influenced by book history, Chapter One argues that the weeklies' literary content was characterized by the periodicals' reciprocal relationship with the book trade: publishers were the weeklies' most significant advertisers, and the weeklies, in turn, communicated information about new books to their book-interested readers. Through an analysis of two series of articles published in the Nation and Athenaeum in the mid-1920s, Chapter Two considers the weeklies' negotiation of their dual roles as forums for public debate about intellectual culture and advertising partners with the book trade. Chapter Three analyzes the book review itself, which found its evaluative function called into question as the number of books and periodicals multiplied rapidly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chapter Four examines the vituperative discourse directed at the intellectual weeklies by the Cambridge quarterly Scrutiny. These attacks reveal not only Scrutiny's disappointment with the specific weeklies of its day but also the paramount cultural responsibility it ascribed to the intellectual weeklies as a genre. By considering the intellectual weeklies' relationships with the book trade, the book-buying public, reviewing, and other intellectual periodicals, my dissertation emphasizes the importance of the intellectual weeklies within the cultural field of interwar Britain and argues for a reconsideration of their role in the production and labeling of intellectual culture during this period.

Pabon, Alexander January 2011 (has links)
This work presents an investigation done on the book Caminando de nuevo 3 that is adopted in some Swedish schools for the Spanish course they offer. The hypothesis explored whether the content of the book could create wrong stereotypes based on incorrect used of didactic content.Other related worked in line with this investigation were investigated. Furthermore, twenty students that had used this book were surveyed. The data collected was analyzed. This analysis is in line with the hypothesis of this work. A great majority of the students reported not to be motivated, they were not particularly enthusiastic toward the book, and were surprised by the content of the book related to the exercises, the text itself and the pictures used in the book.In conclusion this work suggests that this type of textbooks should be revised and present a better alternative for its text, visual and grammatical content. Finally, some recommendations are given both to teachers and students in order to reach the goals that have been defined by their curriculum.

A study of key determinants for the syndication of underwriters and IPO underwriting systems in cross Tri-Regional securities markets

Chuang, Ying-ming 07 July 2008 (has links)
Taiwan carries out the new underwriting rules since 2005, it is very important to the reformation of financial system, and its purpose is mainly for responding to the reformation of underwriting rules so as to promote the quality of listed companies. At present, the underwriting method of Taiwan¡¦s major Initial Public Offerings (IPO) stock uses the mix and collocation of two systems, public subscription by lot drawing and book building, as the underwriting method, the previous studies emphasized that the underwriter had higher right to decide the amount of placing, which can increase the responsibility and sensibility for the underwriting price, and then the result of promoting placing efficiency can be reached. This study compares the markets in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan that have carried out book building system. This study mainly finds out, because the underwriters in Taiwan can provide higher stock weight of the placing of book building and the underwriters have higher right to decide the amount of placing, thus, it is more possible that when placing IPO stock, the company would regard its customers as the core, and this act is entirely different with the conception of the initial reformation, and unfavorable influence would be produced to the issue company or individual investor at the same time. This study sums up the previous literatures and questionnaire statistical analyses, and then proposes the influence that degree of rigor of laws and regulations, anticipated result of placing, institutional function of book building and decisive factors of placing have towards the actual results of placing of underwriters. The questionnaires are distributed to the personnel who actually are responsible for the IPO placing strategy of underwriters that have hosted actual placing results in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. After the comparison using single factor variance, one can find that the underwriters from Mainland China significantly think that the laws and regulations are stricter, and IPO stock has more good prospects of gain. However, the underwriters from Taiwan significantly think that the decisive factors of placing are stronger. When placing IPO stock, the underwriters from Mainland China prefer placing according to the system, while the underwriters from Taiwan prefer placing according to relationship. This study uses regression analysis to discuss the factors that influence the underwriters to carry out placing according to system or relationship. This study finds out if the degree of rigor for the two factors in laws and regulations, objective & fair and book building standard, is higher, then the underwriters will tend to carry out placing according to system more. And also, the system-oriented and price-oriented factors in decisive factors of placing also promote the underwriters carry out placing according to system. On the other hand, if the degree of rigor for the objective & fair factor in laws and regulations is higher, then the underwriters tend not to carry out placing according to relationship. When the factors such as considering underwriter¡¦s benefits, anticipated profit, and relationship-oriented are higher, then the underwriters tend to carry out placing according to relationship. In view of the above, this study has proposed many suggestions to improve the problems that might happen when underwriters in Taiwan placing IPO stock at present, including report beforehand, exposing the principles, ratio of book building placing, classifying the investors and placing in proportion, regulations of holding term, strengthening the supervision on notary public during the placing process, and canceling the use of person as the basic unit when purchasing but the use of purchasing capital¡¦s scale as the drawing unit. This study also hopes that the relevant departments in governments and underwriters could consult this study thesis and take this study as the reference for the follow-up reformation direction of IPO system.

Classification of finishing tools in Greek bookbinding : establishing links from the Library of St Catherine's Monastery, Sinai, Egypt

Sarris, Nikolas January 2010 (has links)
The thesis examines the decoration of Greek bookbinding, through the study of the leather-covered bindings from the monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai, Egypt. The manuscript collection is remarkable for the variety of binding styles that represent mainly Greek but also other bookbinding traditions, including Georgian. Syrian and Eastern European. The examination of the decorative motifs tooled on the leather covered bindings aims to identify the style and characteristics of bookbinding at the monastery. Moreover, links between and evidence for specific bindings and the manuscripts they contain are established by grouping them and relating them to specific binders and bookbinding workshops. The workshops of the monastery are examined in parallel with groups of bindings that were imported into the monastery. The extent to which the trade in books and the circulation of binding techniques between the monastery and the west was a reflection of the relations of the monastery with its dependencies is also explored. Rubbings of the approximately 5500 tool impressions on the 1195 decorated bindings have provided the core research material. They have been identified, classified and organized into a descriptive electronic database. Imaging techniques have been developed to compare the scanned impressions, which permitted the identification of impressions of the same finishing tools. Based on the identity of their decorative tools and on the process of comparison of their structural features, a number of the bindings have been ascribed to a total of 70 specific workshops, whose dates and origins are explored. 16 of these workshops - nine from the monastery of St Catherine and seven from elsewhere, which produced bindings imported to the monastery, are discussed analytically. In addition to that, 40 original bookbinding finishing tools were discovered at the monastery during this research, which have provided invaluable material for our understanding of the tooling methods and particularities of decorated book covers at the monastery. The largest corpus of finishing tools used on Greek bindings to date has been compiled to provide a reference tool which will aid future research on Greek bookbinding. Supervisors: Nicholas Pickwoad and Mirjam Foot.

The effects of a digital memory book on the quality and quantity of conversations in adults with mild to moderate dementia

Aitken, Katrina Antoinette January 2015 (has links)
Background: Research has demonstrated that adults with a moderate dementia can benefit from the introduction of a memory book to improve the quality of their conversational content. However, previous investigations in the area have focussed on low-tech alternative and augmentative communication aids. Few studies have investigated how digital media can be incorporated into therapy when working with people living with dementia. The present study addresses this gap in the literature by investigating the effects of a digital memory book on the quality and quantity of conversations in adults with mild to moderate dementia. Method: A single-subject multiple baseline design across behaviours with replication across four participants was used in this investigation. Four English speaking adults with a mild to moderate dementia and four of their family members participated in the study. The researcher developed a digital memory book using the Pictello™ application on an Apple iPad with the help of the participant and their family/whānau. Photos and statements were chosen in relation to these three conversational topics: Daily Life, Family, and Myself. During baseline and treatment sessions, the researcher met with each participant to conduct and record a five-minute conversation based on the three conversational topics. During treatment sessions, the researcher used the digital memory book to establish the effect of the memory book on the participants’ conversational utterances. Each conversation was transcribed verbatim by the researcher and analysed and coded for Memory Book Statements, Novel On-Topic Statements, Ambiguous Utterances, Unintelligible Utterances, Perseverative Utterances, Error Statements, Other Utterances, Partner Prompts, Partner Statements, Partner Questions, and Partner Other statements. A research assistant independently transcribed 20% of the transcripts and coded 20% of the conversations to establish the inter-observer agreement for the transcription and coding. Results: Visual analysis of the total-on-topic statements revealed a lack of evidence of a clear difference between the baseline and treatment phases across all the behaviours for each of the four participants. All four participants increased their total-on-topic statements with family members during an initial baseline session without the digital memory book to a follow-up session involving the digital memory book. Conclusion: Although the use of a digital memory book did not improve the quality and quantity of conversations in adults with mild to moderate dementia during conversations with the researcher, further research in the area is warranted. Future studies could focus on individuals with moderate or more severe dementia and individuals who are familiar with using digital media in their daily lives. Research could also focus more on the use of digital memory books during conversations with family members.

"You have sweetened your word" : sincerity and prayer in Leonard Cohen's Book of Mercy

Pezzarello, Christopher Joseph. January 1997 (has links)
Book of Mercy (1984) occupies a central place in the career of Leonard Cohen, as comparison to a wide variety of Cohen "texts," from poetry, the novel and song to the personal interview and music video, reveals. Interviews and book reviews contemporary with Book of Mercy indicate that the latter contains a sincere message of faith and prophetic warning that Cohen publicly defends. Cohen's eclectic but reverent incorporation of language and ideas from Judaeo-Christian traditions of prayer and mysticism shows his regard for the sacred expression of his predecessors. As a result, Book of Mercy stands slightly apart from the rest of Cohen's oeuvre, yet it is not simply an anomaly. Instead, it forms an integral part of a prolonged narrative of spiritual desire that began in 1956 with Cohen's first book of poetry and has continued through to his latest album, The Future (1992) and a recent poem, "On the Path." Book of Mercy marked a renewed sense of artistic vocation and conviction in the work of Leonard Cohen that remains unshaken today.

Women publishers of puritan literature in the mid-seventeenth century : three case studies

Bell, Maureen January 1987 (has links)
This thesis looks beyond the stereotypes of women as transmitters and caretakers of businesses by focussing on the careers of three women, one a widow who remarried, one a woman with no apparent family connection with the trade, and the third another widow who carried on the business for almost ten years after the death of her husband. Their careers are reconstructed from biographical data and the details of their publishing output. Emphasis is placed on the relationship of individuals to the sectarian communities for which they published, and on the ways in which sectarian material came to be published and distributed. The studies suggest ways in which women's inferior legal status could protect them in their 'seditious' activities, and reveal the inadequacies of attempts to control the press during the period 1645-75. Hannah Allen's output demonstrates her development over a brief period of a specialized trade in books representing the strand of Independent thought which grew into Fifth Monarchism, and her emergence from economic dependency on partnerships to become a publisher in her own right. Mary Westwood's career reveals a level of publishing outside the London book trade and concerned exclusively with a Quaker market largely in-the provinces. The career of Elizabeth Calvert is examined both before and after the death of her husband in order to investigate her role in a leading radical bookseiling business. -' Her later activities provide evidence of the shortcomings of the 1662 'Licensing, Act, and confrontations between a group of 'Confederate' women and the authorities suggest how women could avoid punishment despite their persistent publishing of nonconformist and opposition literature.
