U.S. newspaper coverage of immigration in 2004: a content analysis

Zhang, Jing 29 August 2005 (has links)
This study examined the U.S. newspaper coverage of immigration in 2004. Previous studies have focused on the ideological implication of news coverage, showing that the news frames conveyed elites?? racism toward immigrants. Little research has been done to offer an overview of the general U.S. news content on immigration in the 21st century, such as a study on how topics, themes, and sources shape news frames. Guided by the principle of framing, this study explored the topics, themes, sources, frames, and differences of three major U.S. newspapers??The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Houston Chronicle??on immigration. One hundred and twenty-nine articles were examined for this study. The study found that a frame of ??confrontation and frustration?? emerged from the most dominant topics, themes, and sources present in the newspapers. The study also showed that the newspapers were less concerned about differentiating between ??who was legal and who was illegal.?? Half of the time, the newspapers studied represented immigrants, regardless of legal status, as one group. The newspapers were found to be more concerned about reporting the immigrants?? shared experience of living in a non-native country, including shared problems such as in home ownership and in education. Differences among newspapers showed The New York Times?? ??unofficial newspaperof record?? reputation, the Houston Chronicle??s local emphasis, and the Los Angeles Times?? reflection of minority power in California.

Social capital: a good concept gone bad?

Kalischuk, Alison 14 January 2014 (has links)
As a result of increased interest in the benefit of ties with others, researchers have been exploring the idea of social capital with increasing frequency over the past two decades (Portes, 1998). Although the volume of literature has accumulated and its application expanded, there has been a proliferation of misguided or poorly conceptualized social capital research (Portes, 2000; Furstenberg, 2005). This has not only affected its vigour (Portes, 1998), but has problematized its measurement. Although conceptualizing and defining have been heavily debated through the years, the issue of its measurement has received little more than casual scholarly recognition. Drawing on the works of Charles Lachenmeyer, this thesis offers a unique approach that merges dimensions of social capital measurement with aspects of “good” scientific practices to systematically review a sample of academic articles. Results suggest that assessments of the concept are problematized by article crafting and research-based problems.

The Media as an Image Maker/Breaker: The Case of Tina Modotti and Its Literary Representation

Alvarez, Araceli 14 August 2000 (has links)
This thesis examines the role the media played in shaping Tina Modotti's public image during the 1920s in Mexico and the representation of this image in the novel Tinísima by Elena Poniatowska. In Chapter I, the present study tackles also the issues behind the press attitude in relation to the Mexican political situation and the communist influence during the 1920s. Chapter II provides a review of the existing literature on Modotti's life and her involvement in the Mexican Communist Party. It also includes a brief summary of the Mexican Communist Party's origins and development, since the political environment affected the approach of the press upon Modotti. Chapter III focuses on social research through content analysis of press articles about Tina Modotti, which were published by the Mexican newspaper Excélsior in January 1929. The purpose is to analyze the language employed in these accounts in order to uncover a possible bias behavior on the part of the press when covering Modotti's case. Chapter IV deals with the analysis of Poniatowska's novel Tinísima through a postmodern perspective. The connecting theme between this and the former chapter is based on the insertion of articles from Excélsior that function as latent and manifest intertexts in the novel. The objective is to study these insertions in order to interpret Modotti's public and private images within this literary framework. Postmodernism is a pertinent theory since it examines the transgressions of widely accepted views to uncover or demystify reality. Finally, the conclusion in Chapter V links the use of the media as an image breaker to the Mexican social and political context in the 1920s, and suggests political reasons behind Modotti's mistreatment by the press. In addition, the literary representation of Modotti in Tinísima and the analysis through postmodernism provides strong support to this conclusion and points at the role of this novel as an image maker. / Master of Arts

The Use of Qualitative Content Analysis in Case Study Research

Kohlbacher, Florian 01 1900 (has links) (PDF)
This paper aims at exploring and discussing the possibilities of applying qualitative content analysis as a (text) interpretation method in case study research. First, case study research as a research strategy within qualitative social research is briefly presented. Then, a basic introduction to (qualitative) content analysis as an interpretation method for qualitative interviews and other data material is given. Finally the use of qualitative content analysis for developing case studies is examined and evaluated. The author argues in favor of both case study research as a research strategy and qualitative content analysis as a method of examination of data material and seeks to encourage the integration of qualitative content analysis into the data analysis in case study research.
