Preparing Teacher Candidates for the Present: Exploring the Praxis of Mindfulness Training in Teacher Education

Soloway, Geoffrey B. 11 January 2012 (has links)
The fields of medicine and health care continue to demonstrate the benefits of mindfulness-based practice for stress reduction and well-being. Research is also beginning to reveal the professional benefits of mindfulness training with human service professionals, as well as the impact with children and youth, and more broadly within the field of education and human development. This qualitative action research study uses a grounded theory approach to elucidate the added value of the Mindfulness-Based Wellness Education (MBWE) program within three main areas of teacher education: dispositional development, content knowledge, and instructional repertoire. Two years being engaged in the iterative process of teaching, interviewing teacher candidates, and program development brought forth five main themes: (1) Personal and Professional Identity, Reflective Practitioner, (3) Constructivist Learning & Holistic Vision of Teaching, (4) Social and Emotional Competence on Practicum, and (5) Engagement in Teacher Education. Additional findings outline key curricular and pedagogical components of the MBWE program that facilitate teacher candidate learning. Finally, a holistic model of pedagogical well-being presents an avenue for understanding the integration of mindful wellness into teacher education, and the K-12 classroom.

Moi, foule corps : réflexion critique sur l'espace de liberté individuelle dans le processus intime d'intégration des modèles et contre-modèles relatifs au corps

Legault-Lamontagne, Myriam January 2007 (has links) (PDF)

The Study of the Effects of Project-Based Learning on the Fifth Graders' Self-regulation Learning and Critical Thinking

Chiu, Nu-ling 20 July 2010 (has links)
The study aimed to discuss the impact of project-based learning on primary fifth graders with regards to inclination of self-regulation learning readiness and critical thinking disposition. The study adopted the Solomon four-group design with study objects taken from fifth graders from specific primary school in Kaohsiung. A total of 4 classes were randomly sampled with 2 classes being the experimental groups and 2 classes being the control group. The experimental group was applied with the six steps from WebQuest(Dodge & March,1995) as Scaffolding project-based learning in ¡§Taiwanese traditional Arts and Culture,¡¨ where the control group is excluded. After conducting 24 classes of experimental teaching for 6 weeks with 4 classes per week, t-test and two-way ANOVA were applied to understand the enhancement effect of self-regulation learning readiness and critical thinking disposition on fifth graders accepting project-based learning. The study further comprehend the impact of implementation of project-based learning for the self-regulation learning readiness and critical thinking disposition of primary school fifth graders with low, intermediate and high academic achievement. The research results are listed as follow: I. Under ¡§Unprecedented conditions,¡¨ the project-based learning program facilitates self-regulation learning readiness of primary fifth graders. II. The implementation of project-based learning can improve self-regulation learning readiness of primary school fifth graders with intermediate and high academic achievement. Students with high academic achievement show higher statistical significance than students with intermediate and low academic achievement with regards to improvement on self-regulation learning readiness. Students with intermediate achievement with regards to progress in self-regulation learning readiness do not show significance higher than students with low academic achievement. III. Project-based learning facilitates improvement on the critical thinking disposition of primary fifth graders. IV. Project-based learning can improve the critical thinking disposition of primary fifth graders with high academic achievement. The students with high academic achievement show higher significance than students with intermediate and low academic achievement with regards to enhancement of critical thinking disposition. Students with intermediate academic achievement do not show significance higher than students with low academic achievement with regards to progress in critical thinking disposition. The following recommendations are proposed according to the study results for curriculum teaching and future study: I. Implement the advantages of WebQuest to design project-based learning and to increase the number of classes. II. Students with different level of capacity will undergo different layers of project-based learning, which will be implemented to teaching with theory of cooperative learning. III. Researches undergo long-term follow-up or gradual removal of the scaffolding may be used to increase qualitative data collection and analysis.

Evaluation of Udder Conformation, Weight, Body Condition, Reproduction, Disposition, and Calf Growth in Bos indicus – Bos taurus Cows

Cooper, Aaron Jay 2011 August 1900 (has links)
Data were analyzed on 2 to 6 yr old cows to evaluate sire and family effects. Cows were produced in the McGregor Genomics Project from 13 embryo transfer (ET) full sib families (n = 188, F2 Nellore-Angus (NA)) and 4 half sib natural service (NS) families (n = 114, out of 1/2 Brahman 1/2 British dams) from the same 4 F1 NA sires. The ET and NS cows were analyzed separately and together as paternal half sibs (PHS). Daughters of bull 437J had the highest calving rate and weaning rate; daughters of 551G were the lowest in ET, and daughters of 297J were the lowest in NS. Calves out of daughters of 551G were the heaviest at birth; those from of daughters of 437J were the lightest in NS and PHS. Calves out of daughters of 297J were the heaviest at weaning in ET and PHS, and those from daughters of 432H were the lightest. Calves from daughters of 297J and 437J gained the most weight and those from daughters of 432H gained the least. Daughters of 297J and 551G had longer and larger diameter teats and lower udder support scores (more pendulous) than daughters of 432H and 437J. Daughters of 437J had the highest body condition score (BCS); daughters of 551G were the lowest in ET and NS. Calves from daughters of 297J had the highest BCS at weaning. Those out of daughters of 551G had the lightest WWT, those out of daughters of 437J were the heaviest in NS and PHS, and those out of daughters of 432H were the heaviest in ET. Daughters of 437J and 551G scored the highest for disposition (least docile) in ET and PHS, and daughters of 432H were lowest. The regression of WWT on weaning age was 0.82 plus/minus 0.07 in ET, 0.71 plus/minus 0.08 in NS, and 0.78 plus/minus 0.05 kg/d in PHS. There appears to be sufficient variation within and between these full sib and half sib families for use in QTL analysis for major genes affecting cow productivity in NA crosses.

[ Abstract ] This research is for the purpose of to Kaoshiung south funds of utilization and the development tendency the area someone public industry high-level vocational school, makes the partial analyses and the research. The discussion affects this school funds budget disposition factor with whether has the decision-making by chance and of relativity utilization of and the social pulsation the funds. Disposition of in view of the education funds and effectiveness proposed the research suggestion, will be advantageous to future establishes reference the long-term education resources plan as the school, the display education resources effectiveness maximization. Front in order to achieve states the goal and studies budget, the final accounts material the school using the Kaoshiung municipal government, with same economic activity target and so on time economical growth rate, each kind of stock price index, labor productivity index, using the number of times percentage analysis, the mean value and the standard difference analysis, to examine and statistical method analysis and multiple regression analysis tests each hypothesis. Specifically says below, this research obtains the conclusion: (1) School frequently disburses the funds influence factor, from to the student counts for guides carries on the plan funds, this research real diagnosis demonstrated has the high relativity for to reveal the factor with the literature research discussion conclusion is consistent, but the Kaoshiung municipal government frequently budgets also for reveals the factor, obviously the public school frequently disburses mainly admires the municipal government to allocate funds to take from a surplus to supply an insufficiency, frequently disburses take the student counts as the guidance, carries on frequently disburses the plan pattern, basically is the direction which the present stage should maintain. (2) Capital funds counts take the student as the explanation variable, is possible in this research institute supposition to affect in the variable to demonstrate school of capital outlay investment the research changes certain part and the student number presents the reverse relations. (3) The capital outlay makes the analysis by the detail material, the information branch and the information equipment funds possibly explains the variable, has the student to count, the electronic stock price index all for reveals the negative direction explanation factor. (4) Is possible by the school total funds analysis to affect the variable, for reveals with the teaching and administrative staff number to, change influence possible factor and the teaching and administrative staff number the total funds have to the relativity, but the student number reveals the negative direction change, has the difference with the universal cognition, after or is most mainly included the capital outlay the total funds, causes the student to count this variable to make the regression analysis to the total funds to present reverse reveals the influence. (5) The student counts the growth, with the labor production index, the economical growth index changes the movement explanation variable, finally demonstrated the student counts the change, in certain degrees by the labor production index, the economical growth index is possibly changed two factors to explain. (6) Practice equipment budget various branches capital disbursement, studied the school still to have the many branches other student to practice the equipment unit cost to reveal is outdoing other branches, discovered possibly had the decision-making in this aspect school by chance.

Three Essays on Trading Behavior

Clark-Joseph, Adam Daniel 08 October 2013 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes trading behavior in financial markets from multiple perspectives. In chapter 1, "Exploratory Trading," I investigate the mechanisms underlying high-frequency traders' capacity to profitably anticipate price movements. I develop a model of how a trader could gather valuable private information by using her own orders in an exploratory manner to learn about market conditions. The model's predictions are borne out empirically, and I find that this "exploratory trading" model helps to resolve several central open questions about high-frequency trading. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on the trading behavior of individuals. Chapter 2, "Foundations of the Disposition Effect: Experimental Evidence," (co-authored with Johanna Mollerstrom), presents and analyzes results from a laboratory experiment intended to examine if and how "regret aversion"--aversion to admitting mistakes--affects people's trading decisions. Although the experimental results resolve little about regret aversion specifically, they reveal some novel and unexpected effects, most importantly that subjects radically changed their trading decisions when they were compelled to devote a minimal amount of extra attention. In chapter 3, "Price Targets," I analyze how rational investors who privately observe information of indeterminate quality use prices to learn about whether or not their private information is valuable. I derive implications about trading behavior that not only help to explain a variety of empirical puzzles, but also generate several new testable predictions. Although these three essays differ considerably in methodology and focus, they all address the same basic issue of understanding the foundations of trading behavior. / Economics
