The human image in the Iron Age iconography of Gaul

Roper, Simon January 2001 (has links)
This thesis studies the use and development of anthropomorphic iconography in Iron Age Gaul, up to the beginning of the Roman period. The principal focus is on freestanding human imagery. Art, and in particular religious art, is for many societies a critical feature in the definition of cultural identity. It is the contention of this study, therefore, that a better understanding of the changes in the iconography of this period will furnish us with a better comprehension of changes within Iron Age societies themselves. In particular, it is considered whether the anthropomorphic representation of gods is essentially a post-conquest phenomenon, or whether post-conquest religious art built upon earlier, Iron Age traditions. In order to assess these aspects three case study areas (Armorica, Central Gaul and South-West Gaul) were selected on the basis of concentrations of images in these areas. In each of these areas the depiction of anthropomorphic and associated imagery on other media, such as metalwork, is assessed in order to identify any regional trends. In addition free-standing human imagery of the same period from regions outside Gaul is considered in order to identify any wider trends. The free-standing human images of Gaul are then assessed in relation to each other and this data. As a result of this assessment two principal groups were identified. The first is an Early group, produced near the beginning of the period, quite naturalistic in appearance and frequently associated with burial sites. The second much larger Torso group, dates to the late Iron Age with the images depicting a simplified human form. Both groups are considered in relation to the social changes taking place at the time of their production and use.

A holy war : redemption versus damnation as spiritual metaphors in a selected body of work

Kruger, Marieke 29 May 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Fine Arts) / The end of this millennium presents the human race with feelings of anxiety, fear and even despair. With the rapidly growing scientific and technological development we may feel increasingly threatened as individuals. Both the value of life and it's mysterious essence are placed in question (e.g. issues of abortion and cloning). Without a spiritual dimension to our lives, we proceed into the future with uncertainty. Suzi Gablik (1991: 3) sets out the problem when she states: The question is no longer how did we get here, and why? but where can we possibly go, and how? We live in a society that has drastically narrowed our sensibility to moral and spiritual issues, the problem we face is how to deal with a belief structure that has blocked both psychological and spiritual development. This thesis will argue that the desire for a spiritual dimension to life is not redundant in the technological age to come, instead it becomes ever more important for our psychological and spiritual health in an age where "the head rules the heart". My work is a plea for us to return to matters ofthe heart, the primal things that makes man what he is - spirit, soul and body. These three elements are linked inextricably. Without the one the other cannot exist and we will be handicapped as human beings. I am also questioning the focus ofour society, which seems reduced to physical things (temporal), rather than spiritual things (eternal). In my plea for us to return to matters pertaining to the spirit, I claim that God is spirit (John 4:24) and that things ofthe spirit can be spiritually discerned and not solely via the mind. The question we may ask is: has the world of the spirit become inaccessible because the mind is given pre-eminence in our society? Have we then as a result arrived at a time of spiritual bankruptcy where the spirit of man has gone into some kind of dormancy or hibernation awaiting a better season in which to come forth? In this I associate myself with Anselm Kiefer. Mark Rosenthal (1987: 26) quotes Kiefer thus: I think a great deal about religion because science provides me with no answers.

The development of biomedical instrumentation using backscattered laser light

Barnett, Nicholas James January 1990 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the measurement of blood flow and oxygen saturation in the microcirculation using the techniques of laser Doppler flowmetry and pulse oximetry. An investigation of the responses of Doppler flowmeters using different signal processing bandwidths and laser sources revealed two major findings. Firstly, that careful choice of processing bandwidth is required in order to sample the whole range of possible Doppler frequencies present in the backscattered light. Secondly, that the choice of laser source is important in governing the output stability of a flowmeter. Another investigation focused on the evaluation of a dual channel laser Doppler flowmeter using both in vitro and in vivo models. It was demonstrated that the instrument permitted a useful method of obtaining flow information by comparing simultaneous responses at experimental and control sites. The choice of laser wavelength was investigated in a study to determine whether blood flow measurements are obtained from different depths within the skin tissue. The results indicate that some depth discrimination is obtainable using instruments operating at different wavelengths, however it is difficult to demonstrate the effect in vivo. In a separate study it was shown that pressure applied to the skin surface greatly affects the underlying blood flow. It is recommended that care has to be taken when positioning Doppler probes on the skin. A reflection pulse oximeter was developed using laser light backscattered from the skin. The instrument was evaluated in vitro and in vivo by comparing desaturation responses with a commercial transmission pulse oximeter. The reflection oximeter was demonstrated to reliably follow trends in oxygen saturation but several problems prevented instrument calibration. Finally, a device combining laser Doppler flowmetry with reflection pulse oximetry was developed and used in vivo to follow trends in blood flow and oxygen saturation from the same tissue sample.

The Goodenough Draw-A-Man Test as a Measure of Interpersonal Adjustment

Schloss, Charles D. 01 1900 (has links)
Since the premises and history of the Draw-A-Man (DAM) seem to indicate a relationship between this technique and adjustment/maladjustment, and since Leary defines maladjustment in terms of interpersonal behavior, the problem to be studied is to attempt to quantitatively relate DAM scores with some objective measure of social adjustment or maladjustment in children.

Brno - kompaktní město mezi starým a novým nádražím / Brno - Compact City among the old and the new railway stations

Gallo, Luboš January 2010 (has links)
Urban-architectural study of a new part of town between the existing and future main train station in Brno. The study is a new concept of space as a potential alternative to the approved land-use plan. The main feature of the solution is to transfer the planned route of the proposed urban boulevard roller coaster in urbanized areas have street griddle. This solution is particularly beneficial in this respect that the body does not make the roller coaster of the area urban barrier. Emphasis is placed on the proposal to create exciting new urban spaces and their interconnectedness. The idea is to create a new pedestrian route as the natural link between the new railway station and historical center of Brno. The proposal addressed two sites. It is the creation of a new residential area on the waterfront Svratky and also address the reconstruction of railway station area. The proposal envisages the territory of the city with the addition of new functions such as library, conference center and also a new church.
