Predicting Flank Margin Cave Collapse in the Bahamas

Sinkhole collapse is a common karst land-use risk around the world. In the Bahamas cover-collapse sinkholes do not exist because soil cover is thin; almost all collapse is due to cave ceiling failure. The most common cave types in the Bahamas are flank margin caves and banana holes. Flank margin caves have three entrance types: dissolution pit, side breach, or ceiling collapse. Both side breach and ceiling collapse are the result of mass erosional forces; pits by focused dissolution. It was previously proposed that slope was a controlling factor in Bahamian cave collapse. This study demonstrated that 7.5 minute topographic maps cannot resolve slopes accurately enough to predict potential collapse locations. Field surveys with 1 m contours allowed for a more concise slope range in which each entrance type preferentially occurred; collapse breaches and pits were common on gentle slopes and side breaches on steep slopes.

Exploring the Feasibility of Replicating SPAN-Model's Required Initial Margin Calculations using Machine Learning : A Master Thesis Project for Intraday Margin Call Investigation in the Commodities Market

Machine learning is a rapidly growing field within artificial intelligence that an increasing number of individuals and corporations are beginning to utilize. In recent times, the financial sector has also started to recognize the potential of these techniques and methods. Nasdaq Clearing is responsible for managing the clearing business for the clearinghouse's members, and the objective of this thesis has been to explore the possibilities of using machine learning to replicate a subpart of the SPAN model's margin call calculations, known as initial margin, in the commodities market. The purpose of replicating SPAN's initial margin calculations is to open up for possibilities to create transparency and understanding in how the input variables affect the output. In the long run, we hope to broaden the insights on how one can use machine learning within the margin call processes. Various machine learning algorithms, primarily focused on regression tasks but also a few classification ones, have been employed to replicate the initial margin size. The primary objective of the methodology was to determine the algorithm that demonstrated the best performance in obtaining values that were as close as possible to the actual initial margin values. The findings revealed that a model composed of a combination of classification and regression, with non-parametric algorithms such as Random Forest and KNN, performed the best in both cases. Our conclusion is that the developed model possesses the ability to effectively compute the size of the initial margin and thus accomplishes its objective. / Maskininlärning är ett snabbt växande område inom artificiell intelligens som allt fler individer och företag börjar använda. Finanssektorn har nu också börjat undersöka hur dessa tekniker och metoder kan skapa värde. Nasdaq Clearing hanterar clearingverksamheten för clearinghusets medlemmar och syftet med denna uppsats har varit att undersöka möjligheterna att använda maskininlärning för att replikera en del av SPAN-modellens beräkningar av marginkravet som kallas Initial Marginal. Syftet med att replikera SPANs initiala marginberäkningar är att öppna upp för möjligheter att skapa transparens och förståelse för hur inputvariablernapåverkar outputen. På sikt hoppas vi kunna bredda insikterna hur maskininlärningslösningar skulle kunna användas inom "Margin Call"- processen. De metoder som användes för att replikera storleken på Initial Margin var olika maskininlärningsalgoritmer, främst fokuserade på regressionsuppgifter men några klassificeringsalgoritmer användes också. Fokus i metoden var att hitta vilken algoritm som presterade bäst, det vill säga den algoritm som predikterade närmst de faktiska värdena för Initial Margin. Resultatet visade sig vara en modell som kombinerade klassificering och regression, där icke-parametriska algoritmer såsom Random Forest och KNN var de som presterade bäst i båda fallen. Vår slutsats är att den utvecklade modellen har en god förmåga att beräkna storleken på Initial Margin och därmed uppfyller den sitt syfte.

A Low-Cost Loop Measurement Tool for DC-DC Converters

Loop measurements are very important in evaluating dynamic performance of DC-DC converters. In this thesis, a small loop measurement tool as a low-cost alternative to a network analyzer is proposed. The tool is particularly useful when a network analyzer is not always available for use, for example when engineers are working on-site with customers or when a network analyzer is not affordable due to their relatively high cost. The design, simulation, and hardware implementation of the inexpensive loop measurement tool will be presented in this thesis. Results from computer simulation and hardware prototype demonstrate the ability of the proposed tool to perform phase margin, gain margin, and cross-over frequency measurements of DC-DC converters. These results are then shown to be comparable with those obtained from a network analyzer. The procedure used to perform loop measurements with the proposed tool will be explained. Limitations in the operation as well as further improvements to enhance the performance of the proposed tool will also be discussed.

When space is available, telemetry receiving stations are purposely positioned to be outside the region of a rocket motor's plume interaction with the RF path; therefore, little historical data has been available to corroborate model predictions for specific rocket motor types and altitudes. RF signal strength data was collected during the flight of HERA target missile by White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) using a transportable telemetry receiving site specifically positioned to be within the rocket plume region of influence at intermediate altitudes. The collected data was analyzed and compared to an RF plume attenuation model developed for pre-mission predictions. This work was directed by the US Army Kwajalein Atoll (USAKA)/ Kwajalein Missile Range (KMR) Safety Division.

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) is analyzing a 2-RAD prototype currently in operation at the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) that uses an IEEE 802.11b WLAN infrastructure. Preliminary analysis efforts at JHU/APL indicate that the Doppler shift from fast movers, and the system radio link margin, do not preclude IEEE 802.11b from being used for 2 -RAD.

Millennial-scale variability in denitrification and phosphorus burial in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific

The remarkable synchrony between changes in temperature recorded in Greenland ice cores and variations in N isotope records from sedimentary cores recovered from the Arabian Sea and the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) has provided evidence for teleconnections between changes in marine denitrification in the tropics and climate variations in the northern high latitudes. Changes in tropical denitrification have been attributed to changes in productivity, changes in the source of intermediate waters and the flux of dissolved oxygen to suboxic zones. Variations in marine denitrification and anammox occurring at intermediate depths in proximity to productive continental margins have had profound effects on the N:P ratio of upwelled waters between stadials and interstadials, and may have indirectly affected carbon sequestration in the ocean by changing the balance of nutrients available to primary productivity. Competitive equilibrium, the changing stoichiometric balance of elements available as nutrients and the shorter residence time of N compared to P are factors that are believed to favour diazotrophs (N2-fixing organisms) during interstadials and shift the competitive advantage to non-N2-fixing ecosystems during stadials. This study presents a very high-resolution analysis of sedimentary nitrogen isotope records, phosphorus concentrations and bulk detrital element concentrations from two cores collected along the Pacific Mexican Margin. The results show that the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) bathing intermediate waters in ETNP is modulated by the interaction of a Northern Hemisphere climate component with the “leakage” of heavy nitrate believed to derive from the Eastern South Pacific (ESP). This southerly component has a more “Antarctic” timing and is similar to records from the Peru-Chile margin. The sedimentary core recovered from the Mazatlan margin shows a “Greenland” timing of millennial-scale events, with reduced upwelling and reduced primary productivity, a less intense OMZ leading to reduced denitrification and a more southerly position of the mid-tropospheric subtropical ridge during stadials. This would have increased the onshore flow of moist air, ultimately leading to increased precipitation along the western Mexican Margin. Interstadials show a reversal of these conditions. In contrast to the Mazatlan core, the N isotope record from the core recovered from the Gulf of Tehuantepec records an element of “Antarctic” timing superimposed on local, millennial-scale variations in denitrification that are more similar in timing to Greenland temperature changes. In addition, the interpretation of observed variations in detrital elements from the Gulf of Tehuantepec highlights latitudinal displacements of the ITCZ that are consistent with those observed in the Cariaco Basin in Venezuela. Bulk P concentrations from both cores suggest that although phosphorite formation in the ETNP during interstadials is not as widespread as previously thought, the very high accumulation rates in the Gulf of Tehuantepec and Mazatlan Margin lead to total Holocene phosphorus burial rates that are up to 4-5 times higher than had been estimated in previous studies. These observations lead to the argument that the ETNP may play a more important role in regulating global P budgets than was previously thought and call for an improved appreciation of the benthic microbial communities that modulate biomes at tropical latitudes.

Sedimentologic Comparison Of The Late/lower Early Middle Cambrian Altona Formation And The Lower Cambrian Monkton Formation

The Altona Formation represents the oldest Cambrian sedimentary unit in northern New York, recording cyclic deposition in shallow marine and fluvial environments under both fair-weather and storm conditions. Five outcrops and one well log were measured and described at the centimeter scale and the top and bottom contacts of the Altona were identified. Based on the recognition of sedimentary structures such as hummocky cross stratification, oscillatory ripples, graded bedding, trough and tabular cross stratification, and bioturbation, as well as subtle lithologic changes, six lithofacies representing non-marine, middle to upper shoreface, offshore, and carbonate ramp environments were identified. The top contact with the overlying Ausable Formation is characterized by inter-tonguing marine to non-marine siltstones and cross stratified medium sandstones. The lowermost Altona is found to lie only one meter above Precambrian basement and is interpreted to be the only non-marine facies in this unit. Throughout the 84-meter thick section, stratigraphy records a transition from upper/middle shoreface to carbonate ramp deposition and offshore muds before cycling between upper shoreface, carbonate ramp and non-marine deposits. Based on parasequence architecture, this section of rock is interpreted to represent the transition from the transgressive systems tract to the highstand systems tract. Thin sections analysis from each lithofacies quantified grain size and composition and identified a provenance. Modal analysis data from clastic lithofacies reveals subarkose to arkose sandstones with an accessory mineral suite including ilmenite, apatite, rutile, and zircon. Integrating the compositional data, particularly the accessory mineral suite, with detrital zircon dates of 1000 - 1300 Ma (Chiarenzelli et al., 2010) suggests that the Grenville Adirondacks in particular the AMCG suit and Lyon Mountain Granite are a likely source rock. Comparison with the Monkton Formations of Vermont suggest that these two units were deposited under similar sea level conditions and are therefore correlative. Provenance study suggests that they were both sourced form the Adirondack Mountains. The major difference is in their depositional environments as the Monkton represents deposition of predominantly tidally influenced deltaic environment. The environmental processes acting on the two units suggests that the paleogeography of the Iapetus margin in this area was an embayed coastline.
