Vibration in electromagnetically heated steelBaker, R. T. January 1995 (has links)
When a ferromagnetic steel billet was heated by induction a large increase in the amplitude of longitudinal vibration frequently occurred as a result of resonance. This happened when a natural frequency of the bar coincided with twice the heating frequency or multiples thereof. The temperature at which resonance occurred depended on a number of factors including billet length and heating power. Resonance was most often observed when the surface temperature of the billet reached the Curie point. It is well established that magnetostrictive vibrations occur in a ferromagnetic material subjected to an alternating electromagnetic field, but existing data suggests that linear magnetostriction decreases towards the Curie point. Linear magnetostriction was measured in a sample of mild steel up to 800oC using a high temperature strain gauge. The magnetostriction constant 100 was calculated assuming an average grain orientation in mild steel. The data was found to be comparable to that published for single crystals of iron. It was discovered that linear magnetostriction was responsible for resonance below 600oC but not for temperatures near the Curie point. Other possible causes of resonance such as forces produced by the interaction between eddy currents and the alternating electromagnetic field, the alpha to gamma phase transformation and the existence of a thin ferromagnetic layer were investigated. None were found to account for resonance in bars of mild steel heated by induction. Experimental work relating to the induction heating of steel is compared to previous work on the subject of electromagnetic generation of ultrasound where a similar increase of the amplitude of longitudinal waves in steel is reported at the Curie point. It is concluded that the two phenomena are related as they show strong similarities.

The work presented in this thesis concerns itself with the application of Demand Side Management (DSM) by industrial subsector as applied to the UK electricity industry. A review of the origins of DSM in the US and the relevance of experience gained to the UK electricity industry is made. Reviews are also made of the current status of the UK electricity industry, the regulatory system, and the potential role of DSM within the prevalent industry environment. A financial appraisal of DSM in respect of the distribution business of a Regional Electricity Company (REC) is also made. This financial appraisal highlights the economic viability of DSM within the context of the current UK electricity industry. The background of the work presented above is then followed by the construction of a framework detailing the necessary requirements for expanding the commercial role of DSM to encompass benefits for the supply business of a REC. The derived framework is then applied, in part, to the UK ceramics manufacturing industry, and in full to the UK sanitaryware manufacturing industry. The application of the framework to the UK sanitaryware manufacturing industry has required the undertaking of a unique first-order energy audit of every such manufacturing site in the UK. As such the audit has revealed previously unknown data on the timings and magnitude of electricity demand and consumption attributable to end-use manufacturing technologies and processes. The audit also served to reveal the disparity in the attitudes toward energy services, and thus by implication towards DSM, of manufacturers within the same Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code. In response to this, attempt is made to identify the underlying drivers which could cause this variation in attitude. A novel approach to the market segmentation of the companies within the UK ceramics manufacturing sector has been utilised to classify these companies in terms of their likelihood to participate in DSM programmes through the derived Energy Services approach. The market segmentation technique, although requiring further development to progress from a research based concept, highlights the necessity to look beyond the purely energy based needs of manufacturing industries when considering the utilisation of the Energy Services approach to facilitate DSM programs.

Electromagnetic interference from variable speed motor drivesMaggs, John David January 1996 (has links)
A methodology is presented which can be used to produce the level of electromagnetic interference, in the form of conducted and radiated emissions, from variable speed drives, the drive that was modelled being a Eurotherm 583 drive. The conducted emissions are predicted using an accurate circuit model of the drive and its associated equipment. The circuit model was constructed from a number of different areas, these being: the power electronics of the drive, the line impedance stabilising network used during the experimental work to measure the conducted emissions, a model of an induction motor assuming near zero load, an accurate model of the shielded cable which connected the drive to the motor, and finally the parasitic capacitances that were present in the drive modelled. The conducted emissions were predicted with an error of +/-6dB over the frequency range 150kHz to 16MHz, which compares well with the limits set in the standards which specify a frequency range of 150kHz to 30MHz. The conducted emissions model was also used to predict the current and voltage sources which were used to predict the radiated emissions from the drive. Two methods for the prediction of the radiated emissions from the drive were investigated, the first being two-dimensional finite element analysis and the second three-dimensional transmission line matrix modelling. The finite element model took account of the features of the drive that were considered to produce the majority of the radiation, these features being the switching of the IGBT's in the inverter, the shielded cable which connected the drive to the motor as well as some of the cables that were present in the drive.

Composite materials impact damage detection using neural networksLiu, Ning January 2002 (has links)
This thesis considers two basic aspects of impact damage in composite materials, namely damage severity discrimination and impact damage location by using Acoustic Emissions (AE) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The experimental work embodies a study of such factors as the application of AE as Non-destructive Damage Testing (NDT), and the evaluation of ANNs modelling. ANNs, however, played an important role in modelling implementation. In the first aspect of the study, different impact energies were used to produce different level of damage in two composite materials (T300/914 and T800/5245). The impacts were detected by their acoustic emissions (AE). The AE waveform signals were analysed and modelled using a Back Propagation (BP) neural network model. The Mean Square Error (MSE) from the output was then used as a damage indicator in the damage severity discrimination study. To evaluate the ANN model, a comparison was made of the correlation coefficients of different parameters, such as MSE, AE energy, AE counts, etc. MSE produced an outstanding result based on the best performance of correlation. In the second aspect, a new artificial neural network model was developed to provide impact damage location on a quasi-isotropic composite panel. It was successfully trained to locate impact sites by correlating the relationship between arriving time differences of AE signals at transducers located on the panel and the impact site coordinates. The performance of the ANN model, which was evaluated by calculating the distance deviation between model output and real location coordinates, supports the application of ANN as an impact damage location identifier. In the study, the accuracy of location prediction decreased when approaching the central area of the panel. Further investigation indicated that this is due to the small arrival time differences, which defect the performance of ANN prediction. This research suggested increasing the number of processing neurons in the ANNs as a practical solution.

Kineto-elastodynamic analysis of high-speed four-bar mechanismAannaque, Abdeslam January 1996 (has links)
This thesis addresses the kineto-elastodynamic analysis of a four-bar mechanism running at high-speed where all links are assumed to be flexible. First, the mechanism, at static configurations, is considered as structure. Two methods are used to model the system, namely the finite element method (FEM) and the dynamic stiffness method. The natural frequencies and mode shapes at different positions from both methods are calculated and compared. The FEM is used to model the mechanism running at high-speed. The governing equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle. The equations obtained are a set of stiff ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients. A model is developed whereby the FEM and the dynamic stiffness method are used conjointly to provide high-precision results with only one element per link. The principal concern of the mechanism designer is the behaviour of the mechanism at steady-state. Few algorithms have been developed to deliver the steady-state solution without resorting to costly time marching simulation. In this study two algorithms are developed to overcome the limitations of the existing algorithms. The superiority of the new algorithms is demonstrated. The notion of critical speeds is clarified and a distinction is drawn between "critical speeds", where stresses are at a local maximum, and "unstable bands" where the mechanism deflections will grow boundlessly. Floquet theory is used to assess the stability of the system. A simple method to locate the critical speeds is derived. It is shown that the critical speeds of the mechanism coincide with the local maxima of the eigenvalues of the transition matrix with respect to the rotational speed of the mechanism.

Non-linear oil film force coefficients for a journal bearing operating under aligned and misaligned conditionsBannister, Roy H. January 1972 (has links)
It is well established that hydrodynamic journal bearings are responsible for self-excited vibrations and have the effect of lowering the critical speeds of rotor systems. The forces within the oil film wedge, generated by the vibrating journal, may be represented by displacement and velocity coefficient~ thus allowing the dynamical behaviour 0f the rotor to be analysed both for stability purposes and for anticipating the response to unbalance. However, information describing these coefficients is sparse, misleading, and very often not applicclble to industrial type bearinjs. Resu'its of a combined analytical and experimental investigation into the hydrodynamic oil film coefficients operating in the laminar region are therefore presented, the anal,lsis being applied to a 120 degree partial journal bearing having a 5.0 in diameter journal and a LID ratio of 1.0. The theoretical analysis shows that for this type of popular bearing, the eight linearized coefficients do not accurately describe the behaviour of the vibrating journal based on the theory of small perturbations, due to them being masked by the presence of nonlinearity. A method is developed using the second order terms of Taylor expansion whereby design charts are provided which predict the twentyeight force coefficients for both aligned, and for varying amounts of journal misalignment. The resulting non-linear equations of motion are solved using a modified Newton-Raphson method whereby the whirl trajectories are obtained, thus providing a physical appreciation of the bearing characteristics under dynamically loaded conditions.

The Evaluation of health and safety auditing systemsCollison, J. E. January 1995 (has links)
The specific objective of the research was to evaluate proprietary audit systems. Proprietary audit systems comprise question sets containing approximately 500 questions dealing with selected aspects of health and safety management. Each question is allotted a number of points and an organisation seeks to judge its health and safety performance by the overall score achieved in the audit. Initially it was considered that the evaluation method might involve comparing the proprietary audit scores with other methods of measuring safety performance. However, what appeared to be missing in the first instance was information that organisations could use to compare the contrast question set content against their own needs. A technique was developed using the computer database FileMaker Pro. This enables questions in an audit to be sorted into categories using a process of searching for key words. Questions that are not categorised by word searching can be identified and sorted manually. The process can be completed in 2-3 hours which is considerably faster than manual categorisation of questions which typically takes about 10 days. The technique was used to compare and contrast three proprietary audits: ISRS, CHASE and QSA. Differences and similarities between these audits were successfully identified. It was concluded that in general proprietary audits need to focus to a greater extent on identifying strengths and weaknesses in occupational health and safety management systems. To do this requires the inclusion of more probing questions which consider whether risk control measures are likely to be successful.
