Narrative discourse in English speaking coloured persons with aphasia and normal controls in the Western Cape, South AfricaVon Bentheim, Ingrid January 2000 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 103-108. / This study aimed to characterise the discourse performance of English speaking Coloured persons with mild to moderate aphasia and match controls. It ascertained whether various narrative discourse tasks resulted in differences in discourse performance between the two groups in the amount of information and the quality of information provided as well as the number of evaluative devices used in various narrative tasks. Furthermore, adaptation features, dialectal features and ethnic discourse markers were identified. A narrative Discourse Test Battery devised by Ulatowska et al (1998) consisting of two composite pictures, a picture sequence story, a story retell and a personal experience task were administered to all subjects. In order to gain further insight into higher level cognitive processes the formulation of main ideas, providing the lessons for the stories and interpreting proverbs were used. All narrative samples were transcribed and the date treated in terms of the length of narratives, propositional units, quality analysis and analysis of evaluation. The results indicated that for all of these methods of assessment the experimental group performed poorer than the control group.

Genetic and biochemical analysis of ACE inhibitor-induced angioedema in black and coloured South AfricansMoholisa, Retsilisitsoe Raymond January 2011 (has links)
Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) are routinely used as first line treatment for hypertensive patients because of their protective effects against heart and kidney disease. Despite their clinical benefits, ACEi used is associated with adverse side effects such as life threatening angioedema (ACEi-AE) and persistent dry cough (ACEi-cough)

The effect of HIV-exposure on immune responses to expanded programme on immunization vaccines and antigensKidzeru, Elvis Banboye January 2013 (has links)
Includes abstract. / Includes bibliographical references. / Immunization against vaccine-preventable infections is essential to reducing childhood morbidity and mortality. The immaturity and tolerogenicity of the immune system of infants renders them susceptible to infectious diseases and makes induction of protective immunity via vaccines a challenge. HIV-exposed infants are HIV uninfected and born to HIV-infected mothers and have increased morbidity and mortality of unknown aetiology. We hypothesise that T cells of HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) infants have impaired proliferative ability and cytokine production in response to vaccine antigens than HIV unexposed (HU) infants.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer : comprehension of a cancer risk in conjuction with a genetic riskBruwer, Zandré January 2007 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (p. 66-71). / The purpose of this study was to explore the level of understanding of the predictive test result and subsequent impact of testing for a predisposition to HNPCC. Using a qualitative research design, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten individuals (all mutationpositive and asymptomatic for CRC) subsequent to the disclosure of their predictive test result. The use of personal interviews could construct rich descriptions of the circumstances faced by these individuals, following their predictive testing for HNPCC.

The genetics of lithium-induced adverse drug reactions in bipolar disorder patients : a pilot studyWeideman, Reinette January 2013 (has links)
Includes abstract. / Includes bibliographical references. / Name of degree provided by the Faculty of Health Sciences. / Lithium is regarded as the first-line pharmacotherapy for the treatment of acute mood episodes, suicide prevention and prophylactic treatment in patients with bipolar disorder (BPD). Response to lithium has a strong genetic component and lithium-responders have an increased frequency of BPD among their family members. Lithium has a narrow therapeutic index and 75-90% of patients on long-term lithium treatment experience one or more side effects, such as weight gain, cognitive decline and skin problems, amongst at least 20 side effects. The research project is immersed in a larger project on the genetics of bipolar disorder, in which a large number of individuals in families have been investigated over several years. The present pilot study explored whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within GSK3B, AKT1, ARRB2, GRIA2 and PPPARGC1A could be associated with the incidence and severity of lithium-induced side effects.
