This thesis consists of three short stories dealing with loss. "A Solemn Music" depicts Frederick's attempt to maintain his comfortable life apart from Nature, which, in the form of cicadas, is bent on moving him from his complacency. "The Waker" explores Floyd's reactions to the death of a girlfriend. "Appetites" relates the story of Allen's encounter with a beauty pageant queen and his subsequent attempt to begin a relationship with her.

The objective of this composition was to provide a piece for concert band in a large form with the ultimate aim of submitting the number for publication for performance by a college, or good high school band, with the additional hope this number might eventually be included on a high school band contest list. With the thought of publication in mind, it was necessary to cross-cue certain parts and limit the technical scope of the composition.

This thesis consists of a series of nine poems which deal with the theme of finding a balance between energy and form in life and in poetry. Fourteen miscellaneous poems are also included. In addition, an introduction by the author explains the purpose of the thesis as a whole and explicates the poems in terms of this purpose. The introduction discusses the meaning of each poem and the techniques used to convey its message. Each poem in the series of nine poems is also related to the. overall theme of the series.

Desde que apareció Teoría de la Justicia de John Rawls en 1971, los estudios anglosajones en filosofía política tomaron un nuevo impulso. En este trabajo, pretendo analizar el con-tractualismo contemporáneo y reforzar la posibilidad de un acuerdo social. Describiré algunos conceptos de la TJ con el objetivo de mostrar la polémica de la justicia como imparcia-lidad y estudiar las críticas opiniones de los mismos rawlsia-nos. Aquí, expongo especialmente la posición de: Ronald Dworkin, Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum y Norman Daniels; éstos están de acuerdo con muchos aspectos de la TJ aunque tratan de modificarla mediante sus propios aportes metodológicos que resultan ser muy importantes para los problemas de la justicia social. Con respecto a la distribución, es necesario indagar qué significa la igualdad, en qué sentido la gente deben ser iguales y dependiendo de esto, se puede hacer una división de bienes sociales primarios (Rawls), recursos (R. Dworkin) o capacidades básicas (A. Sen). Cada ciudadano/a debería tener la oportunidad de disfrutar de una vida buena, elegir libremente un plan entre diferentes alterna-tivas, por eso, es importante construir instituciones que consideren a la persona como libre y autónoma. Además, es también relevante incluir en la teoría las consideraciones de Norman Daniels y Martha Nussbaum sobre la ética individua-lista, todo esto ayuda a completar la estructura institucional. El marco teórico es lo suficientemente amplio y flexible como para incluir herramientas nuevas en función de que se pueda alcanzar una vida feliz, siempre que ésta esté limitada por una moralidad de sentido común. Rawls ha contribuido a la filosofía política con el importante intento de ubicar la libertad y la igualdad en el mismo enfoque y estableciendo un orden lexi-cográfico entre ellas por la cual la libertad está en primer lugar. Sin embargo, no parece posible cumplir el objetivo de una justicia como imparcialidad si ignoramos las objeciones de algunos rawlsianos y algunos de sus nuevos conceptos, defi-niciones e instrumentos para completar la TJ. Yo hice una elección: el libertarismo de Dworkin, el debate sobre las capacidades de Sen, el interés en las emociones de Nussbaum y la posición de Daniels sobre la salud. / Since John Rawlss A Theory of Justice appeared in 1971, the anglosaxon political philosophy studies took a new impulse. In this paper, I pretend to analize the present contractualism and reinforce the idea of the possibility of a social agreement. I shall describe some concepts in TJ with the object of show the controversy of justice as imparciality and study the critical opinions of the rawlsians. Here, I present especially the position of: Ronald Dworkin, Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum y Norman Daniels; they agree with many aspects of the TJ though they intend to modify it through their own methodological contributions that proved to be quite impor-tant for social justice problems. As regards the distribution, it is necessary to inquire what equality means, in what sense people must to be equal and depending of this, we can make a division of social primary goods (Rawls), resources (R. Dworkin) or basic capabilities (A. Sen). Every citizen might have the possibility to enjoy a good life, to choose freely a plan between different alternatives, so, it is important to build institutions that consider the person as free and autono-mous. Besides, it is also relevant to include in the theory the considerations of Norman Daniels and Martha Nussbaum about the individualistic ethics, all these help to complete the institutional framework. The rawlsian theoretical approach is wide and flexible enough as to allow new tools as to acquire a happy life, if this is restricted by a morality of common sense. Rawls has contributed to the political philosophy with the important intend to establish freedom and equality in the same approach and determine a lexicographic order between them where freedom is in the first place. Although, it does not seem possible to fulfill the objective of an impartial fairness if we ignore the objections of some of the rawlsians and some of their new concepts, definitions and instruments to complete the TJ. I made a choice: Dworkins libertarianism, Sens debate about capabilities, Nussbaums interest in emotions and Daniels position about health.

The American Dream and Other Fiction is a collection of four magical realism short stories focusing on the idea of revealing the human condition through the ridiculous. Although the four stories are written independently of each other, they all carry the similar motif of entrapment. This collection also remarks on the growing absurdity of American capitalism and political correctness. The critical introduction analyzes techniques of verisimilitude in magical realism by traditional authors as well as the techniques of more contemporary magical realists. The collection focuses specifically on the techniques of frontloading and authoritative voice.

Symphony for Band is a composition in three movements following a fast, slow, fast tempo scheme; the work is approximately sixteen minutes in duration. The standard band instrumentation is augmented by the addition of C trumpets, flugelhorns, an English horn, and a piano. The timbre of these instruments is explored both in a soloistic manner and in varying instrumental sombinations.

Finger Spirits is a concerto for piano and orchestra. The traditional concerto form of three, large, separate movements is not present here. It is a one-movement work in three continuous sections. Certain premises of the concerto are retained: (1) the interplay of soloists and orchestra; (2) the display of vistuosity; and (3) the use of fixed thematic elements. Throughout the performance, the pianist alternates playing actual notes with gestures used in manual communication and mimetic elaborations created by the composer. The gestures delineate shapes of particular objects and depict emotions that are present in the work as it unfolds. Finger Spirits explores the act of performance and alters the traditional concert ritual of audience-performer opposition. In addition, it incorporates gestures as an extension of the role of the pianist and thus represents a form of music theater.
