Attitudes Toward Marital Violence: Individual And Situational Factors

Ulu, Sinan 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The present study aimed at investigating the relationship between factors that are inherent in the perceiver, inherent in the situation / attitudes toward marital violence, attributions of blame in a violent incident, and judgments on what the victim should do after a violent incident. Attitudes are assessed via three beliefs that the violence can be justified, the husband is not responsible from the violence, and the blame of the violence can be attributed to the wife. Factors inherent in the perceiver (named individual factors), which are thought to be important, were defined as patriarchal and traditional beliefs about marriage and the family, hostile and benevolent sexism, beliefs about normative approval of violence, and gender. Factors inherent in the situation (named situational factors) were existence of (perceived) provocation in a violent incident, severity of the violence, and employment status of the wife and the husband. 327 METU students (176 female, 151 male) had filled out a questionnaire, in which a violent episode between a husband and a wife was described. The scenario contained manipulations on the situational factors. Other constructs were assessed via Likert type scales. Analyses revealed that the sample had held negative views of marital violence, but tend to disagree with immediate precautions like calling the police after a violent episode. Both situational and societal factors had differential effects on the dependent measures, patriarchy and hostile sexism was found to be especially related with the beliefs about wife beating whereas severity and provocation was strongly related with the attributions of blame. Existence of children had decreased the agreement with reactions that would end up the marriage. Suggestions for future research, and limitations of the study are discussed in addition to the findings.

Male Migration And Women Left Behind: A Stucy From Ankara

Dogu, Goze 01 June 2004 (has links) (PDF)
With changes in the demand for labor, in the global market, temporary and contract based work arrangements have become the preferred pattern in international labor migration. The employment of Turkish men in the projects of the construction industry abroad can be seen as an example of this. Turkish men migrate when and where work is available and leave their families in their home countries. What happens to the household structure and the relationships among its members, particularly gender relations, when men migrate on a temporary but recurrent manner is the central question of this study. This study aims to look at the impact of such migration on women as &ldquo / the left behind wives&rdquo / . The impact of male migration varies considerably according to three main variables: the type of family structure / existing human capital of the wife / and pattern of migration. This study is limited to a study of families living in Ankara where the husband is employed companies as unskilled or semi-skilled workers in foreign countries in the Turkish construction industry. For the purpose of gathering information on the issue, 50 women were interviewed. Snowball sampling technique was used as the sampling strategy. A questionnaire was developed as the research tool. When the participants&rsquo / husbands migrate on a temporary but recurrent manner, changes in the household composition, income, daily activities, patterns of authority, power and gender relations are observed. The meaning of their husbands&#039 / migration and its impacts, hardships and advantages change from one woman to another depending on their family structure (nuclear/traditional patrilineal), on women&rsquo / s earning an income or not and the patterns of their husbands&#039 / employment. Specifically, the women&rsquo / s status in the household gets better when the duration of the husband&rsquo / s migration increases and when its recurrent pattern becomes more prevalent and stable. It is especially true for the women living in nuclear families. These women have control over money issues and gain authority over decisions made on important matters for their families. Moreover, again in nuclear families where the woman is an autonomous income earner, migration tends to restructure the household and empower the women as opposed to traditional patrilienal families.

Home-based Work And Informal Sector In The Period Of Globalisation: An Analysis Through Capitalism And Patriarchy The Case Of Turkey

Atasu Topcuoglu, Reyhan 01 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims to formulate an understanding of the structuring of informal home-based work at the plane of interrelations between capitalism and patriarchy. It examines informal home-based work with an understanding based on two foci, which are market relations and traditional gender roles. It develops its own suggestions of conceptualisations, namely deliberate concealment and devalorisation by obscuring, building up these concepts abstractly in the theoretical sections and concretely the analyses.

Patriarchal Structures And Practices In Turkey: The Case Of Social Realist And National Films Of 1960s

Yesildal Sen, Hatice 01 October 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis highlights the significance of patriarchal structures and their reproduction in women&rsquo / s social position through the feminist perspective. Patriarchy is a dominant structure both on production and reproduction sphere. Patriarchy, which is a dominant structure in every sphere of social life has material basis and controls both women&rsquo / s labour and sexuality. With this framework some concepts such as the types of women&rsquo / s labour, paid and domestic labour, family, honour, violence and masculinity are used in order to understand patriarchy. Patriarchy is not a fixed structure / on the contrary it has been changed according to the different mode of production and different social and cultural structures in which it takes place. In the scope of this thesis, the examples of &lsquo / social realist&rsquo / and &lsquo / national cinema&rsquo / are analysed sociologically. The social, economic and political structure of Turkey in between 1960-70 has some special importance. In addition to that, the institution of cinema had some important changes at the same period. Meantime, it is important that not many studies were done in woman&rsquo / s subordination for this period in Turkey. Not only woman&rsquo / s subordination in the scope of patriarchy, but also mutual relations of men and the role of men in reproduction of patriarchy were analysed in the film analysis.
