Managing and reducing educators' resistance to change in Sediben-West (D8) / Anna Lebohang Molete

The following key words were used: resistance, change, renewal, conflict, change management, resistance management, restructuring. All economies, and especially an economy like that of The New South Africa, depend on a well-educated, adaptable and continuously teaching work force to generate and implement change and innovation in schools. This requires a high quality and standard of education. Furthermore, education has a critical role to play in attempts to develop and maintain successful democratic societies. To address these objectives, order in the practical teaching situation is a prerequisite. Educators play a key role in creating quality and order in the practical teaching situation. Quality and order in education mean that the education process and outcomes must realise the best potential of the learners and meet the expectations of the community. Other factors such as resources may also contribute, but educators are mainly responsible for such quality and order since these aspects are rooted in their knowledge, skills and dedication. At present large numbers of pupils leave school with a school record of failure and without sufficient knowledge, understanding and competence to pursue successful careers. One of the reasons for this sense of failure is the almost complete absence of order in some schools since educators are resisting change which is brought about in the education system. There are many reasons for the apparent resistance to change. It is believed that educators can, to a certain extent, be regarded as a significant factor (perhaps a key factor) causing lack of order and discipline in schools, because of lack of support from the education department in meeting the needs of educators to enable educators to be productive. The management of resistance to change by school principals in Sedibeng-West (D8) was investigated in this study. Changes are continually occurring on all levels of a rapidly developing community. The school principal, as education manager, should be trained in a firm variety of skills, whlch will enable him to implement the management of resistance to change efficiently. Examples of large-scale changes that occurred in education during the past six years are the implementation of Curriculum 2005 and the transformation of Model C schools. It would therefore appear that it might be sensible to focus on reducing educators' resistance to change as part of a strategy to re-establish and promote order in education. The aim of this research centred on the following questions: How can the concept "resistance" be interpreted to create positive attitudes amongst educators to accept change in the education system? What is the role of principals as managers of resistance to change? Firstly, a literature study was undertaken to ascertain the nature of resistance to change, as well as methods and models according to which resistance to change can be managed. Findings from the literature study point to a number of aspects of resistance to change that play a decisive role in the management of change. These include factors giving rise to resistance to change, types of resistance to change, manifestation of resistance to change and reaction phases of resistance to change. Secondly, an empirical investigation was undertaken to investigate the degree and way in which school principals manage resistance to change and how educators' attitudes can be changed to accept change positively. A critical analysis of the ideology of Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri with special reference to Islamic revivalism

Although 'The Revival of Islam and Muslims' has not been studied, discussed and researched in the past as a specific subject of Islamic Sciences or as a part of Islamic curricula in seminaries and educational institutions, at present it has become a hot cake for intellectual and academic discourse among Muslim and non-Muslim scholars alike. In this context the present study investigates, examines and critically analyses the ideology of Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri regarding Islamic Revivalism. This study examines the areas of Muslim Thought which have been subjected to severe ailments and distortions, during the decline period of the Muslim Ummah, leading them to inactivity and stagnancy. I also attempt to suggest various remedial measures to overcome the prevailing conditions, using the ideology of revivalism by Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri critically compared with other ideologies of Maududi and al-Banna. Furthermore, I will analyse the ideology of Dr Al-Qadri for the reconstruction of the political, economic, juristic, religious and spiritual thought of Islam in the contemporary context. As Qur'anic Philosophy of Revivalism is a new concept in academia, there is vast scope for investigation of this field to discover new horizons in this particular subject ofIslamic sciences bringing forth some new aspects of research regarding the revival of Islam and Muslims. The present study will enhance the knowledge, background, rationale, significance as well as the necessity of the revival of Islam and its religious, spiritual, academic, legal, juristic, economic and political values and also create awareness for the reformation of the prevailing declining and decaying conditions of Muslim societies around the globe. Consequently, this thesis will enable one to realise and appreciate the significance of revivalism in the contemporary context. In the main, my methodology focuses on library research in relation to the works of Dr Al-Qadri as well as other revivalists in contemporary Muslim Thought. Thus, I will rely heavily on the Islamic core sources approach to Tafsir, Hadith scholarship and Islamic law (Fiqh) in terms of textual analysis.

A study of the externalities of reconstruction projects in neighbourhood residential markets

Externalities are defined as situations where an economic activity of an economic subject affects the production or consumption activities of other economic subjects (third parties), that do not participate in the activity. Externalities therefore cause changes in the welfare state of third party subjects and result in an economic inefficiency in an economy, indicating that the economy does not enjoy the maximum benefits from its given resources. Reconstruction project is a kind of large scale residential renewal programs that is organized and undertaken by private sector in Korea. In the process of profit maximization in the private sector, old housing estates are reconstructed with higher and larger residential buildings, as well as more dwelling units on the same sites. These changes emit externalities into the neighbourhood residential markets. The aim of the study is to demonstrate, statistically, the creation of externalities in the reconstruction of old housing estate. In doing so, the study investigates the differences of land prices in the neighbourhood residential markets due to the externalities generated by the projects and quantifies the differences, using the land price data from the Ministry of Construction and Transportation in Korea. Three statistical analysis methods were used in the study. Firstly, descriptive statistic detected the differences of land prices between the residential markets in each project case and indicated the existence of the externalities in some of the neighbourhood residential markets. Secondly, ANOVA and T-tests statistically concluded that reconstruction projects emit externalities in some neighbourhood residential markets. Lastly, the intervention analysis quantified the amounts of the externalities and verified the established hypotheses. The major finding of the study is that reconstruction projects emit externalities in the neighbourhood residential markets, and the net externalities are, on the whole, positive. It is concluded that the general welfare could be extended as the production level of reconstruction projects is increased.
