[en] IMPLICIT METHOD FOR CURVE RECONSTRUCTION FROM SPARSE POINTS / [pt] MÉTODO IMPLÍCITO PARA RECONSTRUÇÃO DE CURVAS A PARTIR DE PONTOS ESPARSOS

SUENI DE SOUZA AROUCA 25 April 2006 (has links)
O principal objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar um novo método de aproximação de curvas implícitas a partir de pontos esparsos que melhora o estado da arte / [en] In the field of computer vision and image analysis, implicit curves and surfaces have been recognized as the most useful representation for 2D or 3D objects, mainly because they allow description of shapes by a formula. Most of implicit methods uses algebraic curves to fit globally the frontier of the foreground in a binary image. When the foreground shape is complex, it is common to elevate the curve degree in order to obtain more precision on the approximation. An alternative solution is to decompose the domain hierarchicaly in compact parts and obtain local approximation for the object in each part, and then patch all together in order to obtain a global description of the object. The main objective of this work is to present a new method for implicit curve fitting from sparse point that improves the state of the art

Geomorfologia e arquitetura deposicional de uma planície de cordões litorâneos lacustre, litoral norte do RS - Brasil

Bitencourt, Volney Junior Borges January 2015 (has links)
Beach ridges and foredune ridges are morphological elements largely present in depositional coasts with abundant sediment supply. In this study, the morphology, the stratigraphy and genesis of a strandplain (sand ridge plain) developed at the Quadros lagoon, northern littoral of Rio Grande do Sul, are studied. Photographic surveys, analysis of satellite imagery and topographic surveying plus geophysical data collected with GPR and sedimentological data from drill holes allowed elucidate the facies that make up the depositional architecture and specify the surface geometric characteristics of the ridges. Was possible to estimate the stage of development of the strandplain by 14C dating, and the modeling of waves and analysis of winds pattern have led to infer the fluid dynamic conditions involved in its genesis. The strandplain comprises beach ridges and foredune ridges, which makes a complex barrier. These ridges are results of a regressive sequence developed on a lagoon bottom basal facies. The regressive sequence comprises deposits of shoreface, deposits of beachface/ backshore, foredunes and washover fan. The lagoon bottom basal facies records the aggradation and progradation phases of the lagoon bottom facies of the lagoon system occurred between 7047 ± 197 ka and 6230 ± 122 ka. The strandplain comprises 20 continuous and semi-continuous ridges, low amplitude and spaced 5-50 m. The migration of transgressive dune fields of Curumim barrier to inside the lagoon (between 7.1 and 5.5 ka) may have been an important source of sand to form the strandplain of NE margin of Quadros Lagoon.

Changing patterns of residential land use in the municipality of Maple Ridge, 1930-1960

Ivanisko, Henry Imrich January 1964 (has links)
This study attempts to explain and account for the residential land use patterns of Maple Ridge for a thirty year period from 1930 to 1960. The residential land use pattern for I960 is presented in Chapter I; its development and characteristics are accounted for by the reconstruction of patterns for 1930, 1940, and 1950, in Chapters II, III, and IV respectively. Information from which the patterns of residential land use emerged for each decade was obtained from Assessment Rolls at the Maple Ridge Municipal Hall, Haney, and verified by municipal officials and observation. Residential land use in Maple Ridge began and spread from the centres of Haney and Hammond and formed a scattered pattern extending away from the Fraser River along the major avenues and roads. An uncontrolled pattern of scattered residential building characteristic of 1950 reached sprawl proportions by I960. / Arts, Faculty of / Geography, Department of / Graduate

Methane sources, fluid flow, and diagenesis along the northern Cascadia Margin; using authigenic carbonates and pore waters to link modern fluid flow to the past

Joseph, Craig E. 29 February 2012 (has links)
Methane derived authigenic carbonate (MDAC) precipitation occurs within marine sediments as a byproduct of the microbial anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). While these carbonates form in chemical and isotopic equilibrium with the fluids from which they precipitate, burial diagenesis and recrystallization can overprint these signals. Plane polarized light (PPL) and cathodoluminescent (CL) petrography have allowed for detailed characterization of carbonate phases and their subsequent alteration. Modern MDACs sampled offshore in northern Cascadia (n =33) are compared with paleoseep carbonates (n =13) uplifted on the Olympic Peninsula in order to elucidate primary vs. secondary signals, with relevance to interpretations of the carbonate record. The modern offshore environment (S. Hydrate Ridge and Barkley Canyon) is dominated by metastable acicular and microcrystalline aragonite and hi-Mg calcite (HMC) that with time will recrystallize to low-Mg calcite (LMC). The diagenetic progression is accompanied by a decrease in Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios while variation in Ba/Ca depends upon the Ba-concentration of fluids that spur recrystallization. CL images discern primary carbonates with high Mn/Ca from secondary phases that reflect the Mn- enrichment that characterizes deep sourced fluids venting at Barkley Canyon. Methane along the Cascadia continental margin is mainly of biogenic origin, where reported strontium isotopic values reflect a mixture of seawater with fluids modified by reactions with the incoming Juan de Fuca plate. In contrast, the Sr-isotopic composition of carbonates and fluids from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1329 and nearby Barkley Canyon point to a distinct endmember (lowest ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr = 0.70539). These carbonates also show elevated Mn/Ca and δ¹⁸O values as low as -12‰, consistent with a deep-source of fluids feeding thermogenic hydrocarbons to the Barkley Canyon seeps. Two paleoseep carbonates sampled from the uplifted Pysht/Sooke Fm. have ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr values similar to those of the anomalous Site U1329 and Barkley Canyon carbonates (⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr = 0.70494 and 0.70511). We postulate that the ⁸⁷Sr-depleted carbonates and pore fluids found at Barkley Canyon represent migration by the same type of deep, exotic fluid as is found in high permeability conglomerate layers down to 190 mbsf at Site U1329, and which fed paleoseeps in the Pysht/Sooke Fm. These exotic fluids likely reflect interaction with the 52-57 Ma igneous Crescent Terrane, which is located down-dip from both Barkley Canyon and Site U1329. This previously unidentified endmember fluid in northern Cascadia may have sourced cold seeps in this margin since at least the late Oligocene. / Graduation date: 2012

Bayesian ridge estimation of age-period-cohort models

Xu, Minle 02 October 2014 (has links)
Age-Period-Cohort models offer a useful framework to study trends of time-specific phenomena in various areas. Yet the perfect linear relationship among age, period, and cohort induces a singular design matrix and brings about the identification issue of age, period, and cohort model due to the identity Cohort = Period -- Age. Over the last few decades, multiple methods have been proposed to cope with the identification issue, e.g., the intrinsic estimator (IE), which may be viewed as a limiting form of ridge regression. This study views the ridge estimator from a Bayesian perspective by introducing a prior distribution(s) for the ridge parameter(s). Data used in this study describe the incidence rate of cervical cancer among Ontario women from 1960 to 1994. Results indicate that a Bayesian ridge model with a common prior for the ridge parameter yields estimates of age, period, and cohort effects similar to those based on the intrinsic estimator and to those based on a ridge estimator. The performance of Bayesian models with distinctive priors for the ridge parameters of age, period, and cohort effects is affected more by the choice of prior distributions. In sum, a Bayesian ridge model is an alternative way to deal with the identification problem of age, period, and cohort model. Future studies should further investigate the influences of different prior choices on Bayesian ridge models. / text
