Cultural Socialization Process of Effective Educators of Students of Color in an Elementary School District

Henry, Patricia May 15 May 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this life history study was to identify the experiences that influence the cultural socialization process of teachers and the factors that contribute to the effective instruction of students of color. Six female teachers who are currently assigned to third, fourth, or fifth grade students in elementary schools participated in this research project. Their experiences range from the second year in the classroom to thirteen years of teaching, and they have all had assignments as language arts teachers. Data for this qualitative research was collected from two face-to-face interviews, principals’ written descriptions about classroom environments, and participant observations. The interviews were transcribed from audio cassettes and the data was analyzed using Burke’s Pentadic Analysis, Linde’s Creation of Coherence and features from Spradley’s Participant Observation. Each teacher claimed unique lived experiences, but there were similar threads of high teacher expectation, meeting the needs of students and affirming the cultural differences of the students of colors that were sewn together in all their narratives. The cultural socialization process of the participants was connected to pivotal events that were linked to creation of coherence in their lives. These epiphanies were identified in their earliest recollection and continued into their instructional practices. The findings of this study indicate that there are deep layers that can emerge when teachers reflect on the events that influence their effectiveness with students of color. The conclusions are that effective teachers of students of color are guided by an agenda that includes the multiple roles that they have to assume in order to achieve the goal of success for all their students. Recommendations for further research and implications for theory and practice were also discussed.

A Study on Voting Behavior of Foreign and Mainland China spouses in Kaohsiung City ¡V Example of 2004 Legislators Election

Young, Seh-yu 29 July 2005 (has links)
For foreign and Mainland China spouses who were born in foreign countries but immigrated to Taiwan due to marriage, they probably come to Taiwan to pursue a better life and thus become our neighbors. However, owing to the differences in cultural background between them and the Taiwanese people, many misunderstanding and conflicts often happened between the early immigrants and the local habitants. There are many relevant studies discussing the living problems of those foreign and Chinese brides, but it is rare to see studies about their rights and obligations. This research applies the theory of ¡§funnel of causality¡¨ (Campbell, Converse, Millers & Strokes) to explore the voting behavior of the foreign and Chinese brides. The main concept of the theory is to regard party identification as a long-term and constant attitude factor. Therefore, it thought that party identification is the determinant affecting the voting decision, while the candidate orientation is only a short-term factor to influence the voting decision, and such decision is emotional and lacking of rational judgement. As to issue orientation, it has only limited influence on the decisions of voters, but in the wake of the gradual declination of the voters¡¦ party identification, ¡§candidate orientation¡¨ and ¡§issue orientation¡¨ turn to be the primary factors to influence the voters¡¦ decisions. This study uses party identification, candidate orientation, electoral issue, and political socialization as the four observable variants and carries out questionnaire investigation by using the quantified statistics. The results of the statistical analysis found that, in cognition of voters¡¦ voting behavior, political party preference is not a factor to influence the voting behavior, nor the Candidate¡¦s qualification creates notable differences. However, it was found that the foreign and Mainland China spouses paid much attention to the political views of candidates. The more they integrate into Taiwan¡¦s society, the more recognition of Taiwan they have. In view of the low voting turnout rate, this study proposes that the government should enhance the electoral advertising and promotion in order to increase the voting turnout rate. Furthermore, the government should show more concern about the foreign and Chinese brides and combine the power of the local communities to enable those foreign spouses to melt into Taiwan¡¦s society earlier and further to exercise and fulfill their rights and obligations. Finally, it is hope that the government may treat all Mainland China spouses and foreign spouses equally without discrimination, and help the Mainland China spouses to get their identify cards soon as the foreign spouses do. In this way, those foreign and Mainland China spouses will enjoy the same basic human rights as the local people, contribute their share toward Taiwan, and never be the underprivileged group in this society any more. Keywords: Foreign bride, voting behavior, political socialization

A Study of the Relationships among Taiwanese Expatriates¡¦ Personality, Organizational Socialization, and Work Performance.

Chen, Wei-Chu 05 September 2005 (has links)
If Taiwan enterprises wish to expand their production bases overseas swiftly in order to seize market advantage, one of the problems encountered is how to select expatriate staff. For today¡¦s enterprises, the difficulties include: the global demand for expatriates; their profile characteristics (independent variable);the skill and knowledge of the assignees; whether to recruit from outside or inside the company; how to identify potential expatriate candidates, the connection between talent and work performance(dependent variable); and finally the relevance of organizational socialization(independent variable). My study is the result of a survey questionnaire that explores expatriates¡¦ individual characteristics and the relevance between organizational socialization and their work performance. I really believe my study will contribute to the body of theory regarding human resource management and prove helpful to enterprises active on the international stage. The results of my study indicate that: 1.A personality trait of conscientiousness has a positive effect on a Taiwanese¡¦ expatriate¡¦s work performance. 2.A personality of openness to experience has a positive effect on a Taiwanese¡¦ expatriate¡¦s task performance. 3.The socialization of Organizational Goals and Values dimension has a positive effect on Taiwanese¡¦ expatriate¡¦s work performance. 4.The socialization of Performance Proficiency dimension has a positive effect on Taiwanese expatriate¡¦s task performance. 5.The socialization of People dimension has a positive effect on Taiwanese¡¦ expatriate¡¦s contextual performance. 6.The socialization of People¡BOrganizational Goals and Values¡BPerformance Proficiency dimension have a partial intermediary effect on a Taiwanese expatriate¡¦s conscientiousness and their task performance. 7.The socialization of People¡BOrganizational Goals and Values have a partial intermediary effect on a Taiwanese expatriate¡¦s conscientiousness and their contextual performance .

The relationship of male socialization and personality pathology in male batterer subtypes

Shefferman, Lee 17 September 2007 (has links)
This study examined the role that rigid sex-role stereotyping and male socialization played in differentiating the three typologies of male batterers. The first purpose was to utilize a cluster analysis to determine whether the three male batterer clusters (Family Only (FO), Borderline-Dysphoric (BD) and Generally Violent- Antisocial (GVA)) theorized by Holtzworth-Munroe and Stuart (1994) could be reproduced using the MMPI-2. 101 adult court referred males on probation for domestic violence were given the MMPI-2, and three distinct batterer typologies emerged. Once the clusters were established, this study attempted to determine if the theoretical model proposed by Jennings and Murphy (2000), which emphasized male socialization and its potential effect on male-female interactions within intimate relationships, is influential in creating differentiation among the cluster typologies. Specifically, an emphasis was placed on examining how the FO male batterer cluster differed from the BD and GVA clusters. Four variables were theorized to best represent Jennings and Murphy'™s (2000) model, including: the Masculine-Feminine (MF) clinical scale, Social Introversion (Si) clinical scale, Gender-Masculine (GM) supplementary scale and Low Self-Esteem (LSE) content scale. A MANOVA was utilized to see if the three batterer typologies differed on the variables (MF, Si, GM, and LSE) that encompass the male socialization construct. Results indicated that statistically significant differentiation did exist between the three clusters. Furthermore, there was indication that the FO men adhered more closely to rigid traditional male roles and displayed higher self-esteem. Discussion focused on the importance of matching treatment to batterer typology and the importance of incorporating discussion of male socialization into group therapy treatment.
