Family or group-owned corporations and informed trading are two features of Taiwan¡¦s capital market. Is there any relationship between the two features? Can we solve this kind of problem by some mechanism of corporate governance? These issues are common concerns for participants of capital markets and government policy makers, therefore, there are many scholars devoting themselves in the related research. This study adopts the work of McInish and Wood (1992), who measure informed trading by calculating standardized bid-ask spread. Moreover, some variables, such as trading volume, risk, stock price, company size, and listing market are taken into account because the literature indicates they may affect bid-ask spread. According to the concept of voting rights and cash flow rights introduced by La Porta, Lopez-De-Silanes, Shleifer, and Vishny (2002) and the concept of fraction of cash flow rights on the voting rights introduced by Claessens, Djankov, and Lang (2000), we use the difference ratio, which is one minus the fraction of voting rights over the cash flow rights, to measure the degree of central agency problems. The corporate governance variables, such as board size, the proportion of outside directors, and institutional shareholdings are employed as moderating variables. Multiple regression models are used to test the hypotheses. According to the test results, we find that the more cash flow rights deviate from voting rights the more informed trading will be and it can be alleviated by increasing board size and hiring big CPA firms for audit purpose; while it can be worsen by adopting more outside directors and institutional shareholdings.

An Analysis of Value Creation Capacity - The Case of Taiwan Semiconductor Industry

Wang, Ya-jhen 11 February 2009 (has links)
In this study, for elimination the bias of accounting traditional policy resulted, I use economic value added (EVA) to analyze the performance of Taiwan semiconductor industry. Its findings are as follows: 1.Taiwan semiconductor industry's operating performance is vloatile, the standard deviation of EVA-Spread is more than 14% for years, inter-firm difference in performance is becoming increasingly, and less of 50% of companies is worth to invest. 2.The reason of EVA-Spread performance influence as WACC, mainly be influenced by bank interest rates and industry capital structure changes. And the factors affect ROIC, including the global demand for semiconductor and the real GDP growth rate of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, but not related with China¡¦s real GDP growth rate. 3.In Sub-industries, IC design industry is the best performance and steady, but there is obviously different in inter-firm; semiconductor equipment industry has the worst performance and negative EVA-Spread in recent 7-years. IC manufacturing without DRAM has nice performce in recent 5 years and more and more stable. In the orher hand, DRAM industry has performed poorly. That means that corporations have obvious effect on performance in various sub-industries. 4.Focus on the stability of sub-industries performance, the IC design industry has minimum volatility, secondary is lead-frame, photomask and IC packaging and testing industries. And the maximum volatility is DRAM industry and then is DRAM module and semiconductor equipment industry. On the growth, IC packaging and testing, wafer material, manufacturing without DRAM and substrate industries are steady growing industries. Although lead-frame industry is a kind of slow-growing industry, but its EVA-Spreads are minus. Other, flash module and photomask industries are declining industries. 5.Focus on the investing behavior and value creation capcity, when IC packaging and testing, substrate, wafer material and photomask industries increasing their capital, would be helpful to increase EVA-Spread; and it would not be helpful on semiconductor equipment, flash module and IC design industries. 6.It is related with the sub-industries of IC design, substrate, packaging and testing, wafer material, discrete devices, DRAM and flash industries, and IC manufacturing industry without DRAM. It implied that these 7 sub-industries affected by the semiconductor business. It is not related with the sub-industries of semiconductor equipment, DRAM module, lead-frame, photomask and other industries, and the IC manufacturing without DRAM. It implied that these 5 Sub-industries deeply affected by other factors.

The Informativeness of the Limit Order Book in a Periodic Call Market

Chang, Ti-Yang 17 June 2009 (has links)
Using the intraday data on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), we address the issue of the informativeness of the limit order book in the periodic call market. We find that the pre-call information variables, i.e., the market order and the radius of the order book, have significant impacts on the trade variables, i.e., trading volume, the post-call bid-ask spread, and the trader surplus. Furthermore, we are able to show that the radius, as well as the market order, contains two differential forces in impacting these trade variables.

Extend Depth Of Field From A Lens System Using A Phase Mask

Hsu, Chun-hsiang 08 July 2009 (has links)
A method using a phase mask to extend the depth of field for an incoherent lens system is presented. This phase mask is designed to generate a point spread function in which the intensity distribution is invariant to misfocus. Thus, image could be retrieved by de-convoluting the misfocused one. Its application to 3D profile sensing using point white light illumination is presented as well. A fringe pattern is projected onto the inspected surface using the point white light source. Fringe distribution is then observed by a CCD camera through the presented phase mask at a different viewpoint. Phase can be extracted by the Fourier transform method or the phase-shifting technique. With triangulation methods or proper calibration approaches, depth information can be identified from the phase of the fringes. The phase mask enlarges the depth of field of the image acquisition system, while the point white light illumination increases the depth of focus of the fringe projection system. Thus, a highly accurate, non-scanning projected fringe profilometer with large depth measuring range can be realized.
