The role of competence and warmth in the evaluation of obese individuals

Thouas, Lisa R. 19 February 2013 (has links)
This study examined the effect of varying levels of competence and warmth portrayed by an obese woman, on the evaluation of obese individuals in general. The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) provided a theoretical basis for the four interventions and one control group tested in this study. The interventions involved presenting, either online or in-person, a vignette of an obese woman with varying levels (high versus low) of competence and warmth to 400 first year university students. Several measures were used to evaluate feelings, attitudes, stereotypes, and levels of perceived competence and warmth both prior to receiving the intervention and at three follow-up times. Results revealed significant effects of the warmth intervention on measures of competence and warmth at the post-test 1 time, and of the warmth intervention on measures of competence in examining changes over a two-week time period. Results also showed significant effects of presentation condition, the most interesting finding being that those in the online condition reported the greatest decrease in negative stereotypes and evaluations. Limitations of this study including design flaws are identified, as are suggestions for future research, and implications of these findings.

The Influence of Stereotype Threat on Prospective Memory in Middle to Late Adulthood

Parks, Sherrie L. 01 May 2016 (has links)
Prospective memory, memory to perform future intended actions, is an important component of independent living for older adults. The current study examined prospective memory performance in 120 adults (Young-Old; 45-64 years old and Old; 65 - 87 years old) using Virtual Week (Rendell & Craik, 2000; Rendell & Henry, 2009). Virtual week was used to assess performance for regular and irregular event based, regular and irregular time based, and time check prospective memory tasks. Prospective memory performance under conditions of stereotype threat, stereotype boost, and a neutral condition was also examined. Stereotype threat occurs when individuals fear their behavior will confirm a negative opinion regarding one’s in-group. Older adults completed fewer prospective memory tasks compared to participants in the Young-Old group. No effect of stereotype condition on completion of prospective memory tasks was observed. The implication that stereotype threat may influence memory systems differently, as well as the possible role of the positivity effect on performance is considered.

Stereotypy a definice ženy v masmédiích / Stereotypes and definition of woman in mass media

ČÁSTKOVÁ, Kateřina January 2007 (has links)
In general the Stereotypes and the Definition of Women in Mass Media is divided into two plains that are connected in an analytic manner. The first plain is represented by the problem of gender (in particular the relation of gender and media), the second the definition of situation and the creation of topic via mass media. The work itself targets in particular the definition and reproduction of women stereotype in mass communicated messages. The whole of the work is written theoretically {--} empiric. In addition to studying conclusions of other authors, that work in this field of study, the work is also compiled by empiric surveys. In addition to the analysis of the stereotype of women in mass media communication, the work also concentrates on the ammount of stereotypes of women accepted and or condemned respectively the ammount of stereotypes, according to society (in particular according to sex), correspond or do not correspond with reality.
