ORTHOGONAL FUNCTIONALIZATION OF CYCLOPENTA[HI]ACEANTHRYLENESLee, Che-Hsiung 01 December 2014 (has links)
This thesis is based on a research project aimed at the selective modification of the known cyclopenta-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (CP-PAH) based electron acceptor cyclopenta[hi]aceanthrylene. Starting form 2,7-bis(trimethylsilyl)cyclopenta-[hi]aceanthrylene, we utilized bromination and/or C-H activation strategies that could orthogonally functionalize the cyclopenta[hi]aceanthrylene core. Depending on which reagents were utilized, aromatic substitutions could be directed to either the five-membered rings or the six-membered rings. The functionalization location had dramatic effects on the resulting material's optical band gap with the highest occupied molecular orbital being most affected. We further demonstrate how these materials are good electron acceptors through cyclic voltammetry as well as a fluorescence quenching experiments with poly(3-hexylthiophene). Lastly, we have extended the described functionalization strategy to dicyclopenta[de,mn]tetracene based CP-PAHs.

The Effectiveness of Robot-Assisted, Task-Specific Ankle Training in Improving Deficits Across the Three Domains of the ICF in Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP)Alotaibi, Madawi H. 11 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Cerebral Palsy (CP) is considered to be the leading cause of motor disability
among children. Children with CP present with multiple physical impairments including
decreased strength and range of motion (ROM), increased spasticity, and poor balance
and coordination. These impairments often lead to limitations in ankle motor control that
impacts balance and gait function, which puts children at a higher risk for developing
other problems. In recent studies, robotic devices have been developed to address poor
motor control of the upper and lower extremities.
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the extent to which the robot-assisted, taskspecific
ankle trainer improve deficits across the three domains of the International
Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in children with CP.
Method: This is a quasi-experimental, single group, repeated measure design with four
time-testing points through a set training session/protocol. A convenience sample of 5
children with CP were enrolled in the study. All children received 6-weeks of ankle robot
training that included two 45-60 minute sessions per week, for a total of 12 sessions. Data
from Tardieu Scale of spasticity, Boyd and Graham selective motor control, Pediatric
Balance Scale, goniometer, hand held dynamometer, gait mat analysis, accelerometer,
LIFE-H for children questionnaires, ultrasound, and robotic evaluation were collected at
the different time points (1 week and 1 month pre training and 1 week and 1 month post training). Descriptive statistics and repeated measure (ANOVA) were used with SPSS
software for data analysis.
Results: All participants showed improvement in 1. Body Function and Structures (ROM,
tone, strength, balance, ankle control and performance, and muscle architecture), 2.
Activity (gait and activity counts) and 3. Participations over the course of the study.
Conclusion: The results revealed the potential of robot-assisted, task-specific ankle
training to improve motor performance and capacity at the body function, activity and
participation level. Training appeared to have a lasting impact as most gains were
maintained one month following training.

Angular analysis and search for CP violation in the decay B0 → J/ΨK*0Sparkes, Ailsa January 2013 (has links)
LHCb is a precision heavy-flavour experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and in 2011 collected just over 1 fb-1 of data at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV. The Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors allow LHCb to identify charged hadrons by measuring their velocity. The system uses Hybrid Photon Detectors to detect rings of single photons emitted by particles travelling through the RICH radiators. The performance-monitoring of these photon detectors whilst data-taking is presented and discussed. LHCb aims to perform precise measurements of Charge-Parity violation in B and D mesons. The final state of B0 → J/Ψ(→μ=μ-)K*(→K=π-) is an admixture of parity-odd and parity-even final states, which are either longitudinally or transversely polarized. These contributions can be separated by performing an angular analysis. The polarization amplitudes and phases of the final state are measured. No difference is observed between the B0 and B0 flavour eigenstates which indicates that Charge-Parity symmetry has been conserved. The ambiguity in the measurement of the strong phase has been resolved by studying the P-wave and S-wave interference in the K/π mass system. The deviation from zero or π in the measurement of the strong phases indicates that final state interactions have occurred. In addition, the prediction that the polarization amplitudes should be similar to those of B0s→ J/Ψo is confirmed.
