The present thesis discusses the way in which the indigenous people Madiha (Kulina), inhabitant of the Alto Rio Purus Indigenous Land in the Amazon Southwest (Acre/Brazil), understand and experience the exchange relationships – “manakô”. To this end, daily and ritual exchange situations are analyzed, from which particular characteristics of their reciprocal relations become apparent, such as the importance of exposing the terms of what is being exchanged; the preference for direct exchange; and the link between the notion of ownership and distribution. Thus, the research undertaken with respect to exchange relations allows us to reflect on a larger context of understanding of madiha life and the misunderstandings that exist in the interethnic relations that are established among these indigenous people, the non-Indians (Karia) and the Kaxinawá, their neighbors.
