In order to ensure that the piping and equipment of oil pipelines are not exposed to inadmissible pressures it is necessary to analyse hydraulic transients. The present work presents a computer program (TRANSH), developed by the author for calculating the hydraulic transients relevant to oil pipelines. The hyperbolic partial differential equations which govern this phenomenum were transformed into ordinary differential equations via the method of characteristics. Using finite differences these ordinary differential equations are then transformed into algebric equations which may be solved on a computer. The program developed here models equipments usually found in the petrol industry for transporting fluids (pumps, block valves, check valves, relief valves, tanks, etc.). To demonstrate the use of TRANSH program it was presented analysis of 2 (two) practical engineering problems.
