Thomas Boston (1676-1732) was a parish minister of the Church of Scotland and a theologian. He was involved in what has come to be known as the Marrow Controversy. This dispute concerned a book entitled The Marrow of Modern Divinity which the Church of Scotland condemned as heretical but which Boston believed to be a fine expression of orthodox Christian theology. In modern times, however, Boston has been the subject of contradictory and incompatible interpretations. There are those who regard Boston as a consistent federal Calvinist who was in complete agreement with the Westminster Confession of Faith. There are also those who argue that certain elements in Boston's theology ran counter to the teaching of the Confession and these, if followed through consistently, ought to have led to the rejection of federal theology. The object of the thesis was to determine which school of thought is correct in its interpretation of Boston. To establish this we have examined Boston's teaching on nine doctrines: the Covenants; the Person of Christ; The Atonement; Predestination; Regeneration; Justification; Sanctification; Repentance and Assurance. On the basis of this we conclude that he was indeed a consistent federal theologian. The opponents of federal theology have made the mistake of contrasting Boston with certain neonomians (especially Principal Hadow of St Andrews) while assuming that these neonomians were the authentic voice of federal Calvinism. Thus they were able to come to the mistaken conclusion that Boston, especially during the Marrow controversy, was engaged in a dispute with federal theology. The truth is that Boston was in dispute with a neonomian perversion of federal theology. The federal theology of Thomas Boston (1676-1732) is a paradigm of federal theology when it is properly understood as a theology of grace.

Controversies have existed for some time about cybernetics as a subject and difficulties have existed for students in obtaining an overview despite the fact that at some level several cybernetics concepts can be grasped by twelve year olds. An attempt is made to unpack the notion of a subject entity and to indicate how far elements in cybernetics conform to such a concept within a generally acceptable philosophy of science. Ambiguities and controversies among key themes of cybernetics are examined and resolutions offered. How far the nature of cybernetics is likely to create problems of understanding is discussed, along with approaches towards the empirical examination of how cybernetic ideas are understood. An approach to better understanding is formulated and used in an investigation of how and how effectively the concept of feedback is grasped by various groups. Suggestions are offered from the foregoing analysis as to the balance of problems within cybernetics and effective strategies for the future.

This dissertation investigates whether controversial beliefs concerning a range of topics can be rational or reasonable. It proceeds by developing a series of challenges to the putative rationality of belief in such topics. In chapter 1, the project is introduced and motivated. Several challenges are set out in chapters 2-5. Finally, a thought behind one solution to these challenges is examined in chapter 6.

A through study of the literature showed that agricultural biotechnology is a much debated topic and there is a vast difference between the concerns expressed by its opponents in developed countries and those expressed by the opponents in developing countries. The research question was whether the sources used in an article determined the way in which this issue is framed. After conducting a content analysis of all articles written in Times of India between the time periods January 2001 - December 2003, it was found that the sources used did determine the way this issue was framed.
