日本においてプロテスタント・キリスト教が受容されて根付いた主な土地は東京や大阪などの大都会、あるいは県庁所在地などの地方の拠点都市であった。ところがその対極に位置する中国地方の山間部のしかも旧時代の伝統を色濃く残す備中高梁にて明治十年代の初頭にキリスト教が伝道されて二十年代前半には町の中に確固たる基盤を確立した。その過程を幕末の前史にまで遡って研究したのが本論文である。 / In Japan, Protestantism has taken root primarily in major cities and the prefectural capitals. By contrast, the town of Takahashi is located in a mountainous rural area, and was a conservative castle town just after the Meiji Restoration in the 1860's. In spite of this handicap, a Protestant church was founded in Takahashi in 1882, and it has had a firm standing since then.
