太上皇的數目與歷代的皇帝相較是顯得少之又少，相關的研究也是少數。儘管它是一個非常制的產物，卻可以提供我們一個切入當時政治的角度。唐朝有五位太上皇，是中國有信史以來最多的一朝，本文試圖從政治精英發動的政治鬥爭、皇位繼承來討論太上皇，希望能藉此面向對太上皇有較深入的了解與剖析，並推敲太上皇產生及少見的原因。 關鍵字：太上皇、皇位繼承
