台灣近年來發現越來越多原住民舊社遺址，這些遺址雖然多半殘破，卻也出土不少相關遺物，配合考古學與歷史學的研究，嘗試還原幾百年前當地居民的生活與文化是目前的研究趨勢。本篇研究就是希望能利用歷史學與考古學的研究方法，分析曾居住在台灣北部舊社遺址的原住民文化變遷，來印證歷史文獻與近代研究的空白地帶與疑點。 選擇十三行文化的舊社類型遺址作為研究重點，主要因為十三行文化晚期的生活方式與活動範圍，與當時北部居民，也就是現在北部平埔族的先民凱達格蘭族 中的馬賽人（Basai）有部分重疊，筆者的研究動機就是希望能藉著舊社遺址和遺物，配合歷史文獻甚至是平埔族的神話傳說與產業結構來比對和討論該時期文化的遷徙與轉變過程，進而探討為何考古學中舊社類型這個單一的文化分類在歷史學或民族學的資料中卻包含了兩個族群。
