黔中地區境內重山疊嶺，並且有無數的溪流遍布其中，地形崎嶇。居民構成的主體上，又是以溪洞蠻為主，毫無疑問是一塊化外之地。從國家的角度來看，黔中也絕對不是一個可以增加朝廷稅收的區域，但是正因為它在西南交通上占有一席之地，因此當國力強盛之時，都會透過各式各樣的方法控制黔中。唐代「黔中」概念就是隨著唐帝國對雲南的開拓，而逐漸形成的空間概念。然而，唐宋兩代對於這塊地區的統治不盡相同，究其原因，則必須從三方面進行考察：一是從制度探討溪洞、行政建置與政策，二是分析溪洞勢力的演變，三是考察唐宋兩朝對黔中地區的邊界控制與開拓。
