Social Gatekeeping, the Serendipitous Tie and Discovery: Authors Connecting Readers to Books through Social Media Outreach

In 2011, over 1.5 million new book titles were published in the United States, a 400% increase in just five years compared to 2006. In the same time period, the market share for eBooks increased dramatically and now comprises 20% or more of sales from many of the biggest publishing companies. This hyper-abundance of titles in an increasingly heterogeneous market place has made it difficult for consumers to connect to books they might want to read. This is the discovery problem. It is compounded by the continuing decline of traditional gatekeepers and sources of discovery such as mass media reviews and advertising, as well as the decline of traditional bookstores where people often find books through browse. Authors and publishers therefore have turned to social media to spread the word about their titles. Social gatekeeping, an extension of traditional gatekeeping theory, is proposed as the framework for understanding how author participation in social networks initiates a flow of the diffusion of information over the web and other computer mediated communication channels, and through individuals and social networks to potential readers. Serendipitous browse and discovery is a key strategy for readers to find titles of interest, and the serendipitous tie is proposed as a social mechanism through which individuals discover new titles and bring it back to their social networks to share. To explore these concepts, a random sample of new eBook titles published during the first week of April, 2012 was generated and analyzed in three phases. The first phase of research classified books and authors according to facets such as traditional or self-published, use of social media and other factors. The second phase used multiple regression to establish an association between the use of social media by authors and a title's sales and presence on the Web. The third phase reviewed selected titles for new approaches to social media use and evidence of the serendipitous tie. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that author web presence predicts discoverability and sales.

This thesis reviews the legal, political and technical aspects of aeronautical information, with a particular focus on the situation of aeronautical information in Europe. It portrays the evolution of aeronautical information and its current nature. It looks at the responsibility for the publication of aeronautical information and the evolution of that notion due to recent trends towards corporatisation to the detriment of full State ownership. It also examines the question of liability for the publication of aeronautical information, including the various legal regimes under which victims of defective aeronautical information can claim compensation, as well as the legal mechanisms underlying and implementing such compensation regimes. The final chapter is concerned with electronic aeronautical information and the specific legal challenges this technological revolution has brought about.

This creative project started out as initially proposed. During the many long hours of work, the project changed. Many unexpected events made the project more difficult. The original idea was to organize, select, print, market and copywrite eleven years of auto racing negatives.The selection of a print shop was the first problem. The cost of the book was considerable. The result was an inferior printer. A problem in communication was next. Deadlines were given and agreed upon but never were met during the whole project. The failure to meet the deadlines over a extended period of time left no alternative. An agreement was reached with the print shop manager and I began to do the work with the notable exception of the running of the press. This was the major change in the original project.This change led to a more technical approach. The actual involvement with the book was now centered around learning about layouts, signatures, flats, halftones, line than raw talent to be successful. Things like training, copy, cutting and pasting photographs, dot patterns, and making plates for the press. This proved to be a positive learning experience.In closing, there are three main points. The first point is how much the project changed over the course of time. The result of little money, poor communication and the use of a poor quality printer led to the failure of the final product as a marketable book. Point two is that even though the final product is not as planned, the project will continue even beyond the creative project. A final marketable product is the goal and the creative project is just a step in reaching that goal. Lastly, I have developed a new appreciation for what a true artist is. It takes more education, experiences, environment, dedication, money are just a few of the qualities needed. All of these factors and more have been discovered in the making of this book. It has helped me establish new guidelines for what makes a true artist.
