  • The Global ETD Search service is a free service for researchers to find electronic theses and dissertations. This service is provided by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
Our metadata is collected from universities around the world. If you manage a university/consortium/country archive and want to be added, details can be found on the NDLTD website.

Coloma Mávila, Rodolfo January 2016 (has links)

Chance-constrained and nonlinear goal programming

El-Dash, Afaf Aly January 1984 (has links)
In this thesis the chance-constrained linear goal programming approach is developed to cover the following cases when the parameters have non-negative distributions: the exponential and the 'chi-square distributions. Case 1, when the right hand side coefficients are exponential or chi-square random vdriables. Case 2. when the input coefficients are exponential or chisquare random variables. The following have been achieved: For Case 1 1. We have developed a method for constructing deterministic linear goal programs equivalent to the original probabilistic linear goal programs. 2. We have given a probabilistic interpretation to the deviational random variables and the deviational random variable levels. For Case 2 We have developed a method for constructing deterministic nonlinear goal programs through the definition of the probabilistic deviational variables. 4. We have transformed the equivalent deterministic nonlinear goal programs into equivalent signomial goal programs. S. We have developed a computational algorithm for solving nonlinear goal programs generally and, more particularly, deterministic nonlinear goal programs equivalent to chance-constrained goal programs. iii 6. We have proved that Sengupta! s-transformation for obtaining deterministic programs equivalent to chanceconstrained programs does-not lead to solvable programs. 7. We have-formulated and solved a practical application - namely that of finding the "optimal distribution of exports and, imports to the marine, ports" using the methods and the algorithm presented in the thesis. The methods can be used when a program has mixed goals, some with right hand side coefficients or input coefficients that are exponential or chi-square random variables; -others, deterministic, that is without random variable parameters.

An evaluation of a Tai Chi programme with street children in South Africa

Naidoo, Balendran January 2008 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Zululand in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy: Community Psychology in the Department of Psychology, 2008. / Increasing amounts of scientific evidence has suggested mat a mind-body exercise, such as Tai Chi, is related to improvements in mental health, emotional well-being and stress reduction. No prior study has examined the effect of Tai Chi exercise amongst street children. Working within the context of community health psychology, the present study evaluated a Tai Chi program with street children within the South African context. The research design was quasi-experimental with the participants from places of safety within the surrounds of Durban attending Tai Chi exercise sessions twice per week for 16 weeks. This programme was pre- and post-tested with a focus group interview and Carol Ryff s standardized psychological well-being scale. Statistically significant improvements in the following measures of psychological well-being were found: autonomy, personal growth, environmental mastery, purpose in life, positive relations with others and total psychological well-being. Qualitative findings revealed an increase in positive feelings, improved physical fitness and mental health, and stress reduction. Further outcome evaluations by stakeholders (child care worker, Department of Health Officials, Tai Chi teacher) supported the qualitative findings, as well as indicating increased self-confidence and a positive synergy within the group. / The South African National Research Foundation (NRF)

A comparative study of housing reconstruction after two major earthquakes: The 1994 Northridge earthquake in the United States and the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake in Taiwan

Wu, Jie Ying 30 September 2004 (has links)
Though the idea of pre-impact recovery preparedness planning has recently been promoted by federal and state governments, very little research has been done to evaluate how it affects the process of disaster recovery. This research attempts to understand how pre-impact recovery planning affects housing reconstruction by examining the relationship of pre-impact recovery planning with housing reconstruction speed and the use of mitigation techniques during housing reconstruction. This study was conducted by comparing two cases, the City of Los Angeles, California and Taichung County in Taiwan. This study finds that having a pre-impact preparedness recovery plan increases the speed of housing reconstruction. The relationship between having a pre-impact recovery preparedness plan and the extent to which hazard mitigation is integrated into the recovery process is not very clear, but the experience of the City of Los Angeles suggests that having a pre-impact recovery plan allows local officials to make more effective use of the “window of opportunity” after disaster.
