Two years of hydrodynamic monitoring in association with remotely sensed and numerical modelling data were used to investigate the upwelling forcing mechanisms close the formation zone of the South Atlantic west boundary currents (WBC) - Brazil Current (BC) and North Brazil Current/ North Brazil Undercurrent (NBC/NBU). To accomplish this task, a set of original in situ oceanographic data sampled along the shelf at two monitoring stations: the northern PF and the southern BTS, near the entrance to Todos os Santos Bay. First, the intra-annual variation of the shelf circulation and its forcing mechanisms were investigated through the vertical structure of currents on the shelf, the wind eld and the circulation on the slope, proxy of the large-scale circulation. The results showed that the circulation on the shelf at the station #PF is mainly induced by the wind. While, the circulation in the #BTS undergoes a great in uence of the tide. Subsequently, fteen shelf-break upwelling events were successfully identi ed by shelf-bottom temperature anomalies higher than 1 ◦C based on a 30-days running-mean window. The upwelling episodes identi ed here extends for a length of at least 80 km, has a clear seasonality (Sep-Apr). The duration (11,6 days average) and intensities (maximum of 4,2 ◦C) was consistent with upwelling events from well-known upwelling regions. Our results allowed for the identi cation of three mechanisms responsible for the upwelling process, two associated with the wind eld (Ekman pumping - TPUMP, and Ekman transport - TEK), and one related to ocean currents (cyclonic eddies). The wind driven processes, especially TEK, were the main drivers for most of the mapped events, being favorable in more than 90% of the events. Cyclonic eddies were associated with almost 70% of upwelling events. The two of them, the strongest recorded events, took place with littlefavorable wind conditions, and were driven by cyclonic eddies, originated out of the study region. Other two events were associated with the combined action of wind and cyclonic eddies originated by the lateral drift of the BC away from the coast. In these situations, low temperatures persisted for more than thirty days. Hence, wind processes, second by cyclonic eddies, were the main forcing mechanisms of shelf-break upwelling processes around the Brazil Current formation zone.
