In the endeavour to abolish from society all forms of ideologies that prescribe the domination of one sex over another, it has become increasingly important to analyse the representation of women in dramatic literature because dramatic literature reflects the philosophies and codes of behaviour which enable individuals to dominate one another in society, and assists in either reinforcing old ideologies or shaping new ones. Although Sam Shepard has been an influential force in the creation of modern drama, his plays reflect a patriarchal ideology that dictates that women are subordinate to men. Shepard's plays dramatise various male predicaments and his female characters are constructed and utilised to express men's experience, not women's. One of the conflicts which besets the male characters is that they desire to return to the womb of the mother, but simultaneously fear that their identities will be engulfed by the mother. In The Rock Garden, Red Cross and Fourteen Hundred Thousand, these desires and fears are demonstrated through the female characters, who are manipulated to represent objects of male desire and/or objects onto which devouring images are projected. Women are therefore represented in a manner in which they are best able to express the male characters' identity related conflicts. In Curse of the Starving Class and Buried Child, characters suffer from receiving insufficient nurture, are spiritually and emotionally impoverished or cursed and appear unable to transform their lives. The female characters are presented as being partly responsible for causing these predicaments since their nurturing, generative and transformative abilities are presented in a negative light. Women are also represented as objects of blame in the male characters' attempts and failures to undergo rebirths and are once again created to express male predicaments. In Fool for Love and A Lie of the Mind, Shepard focuses on the relationships between men and women, but is only able to present the male characters' perspectives and represent male desire. The female characters are regarded, and engaged with, as reflections of the male characters' selves and are frequently utilised to express male desire. If Shepard's plays are persistently applauded and seen as examples to be emulated, we need to closely analyse these dramas that represent women in a manner which expresses male predicaments and which places them in roles that allow men to dominate them.

Sergey Rakhmaninov wrote three symphonies in different periods of his life. The First Symphony in D Minor, opus 13 (1895) reflects his style as an apprentice and beginning composer; the Second Symphony in E Minor, opus 21 (1907), his mature style of the early 1900's; and the Third Symphony in A Minor, opus 44 (1936), his style at the end of his life in the United States. Each symphony is representative of his musical style at its time of composition. In addition, the evolution of his musical language can be traced through a study of various components of these three works. Structural, harmonic, and tonal aspects of each of the three symphonies are the musical components examined in this dissertation. The formal and tonal structures are examined and concisely presented in a series of charts for the individual movements of each symphony. The examination of the formal structure of the symphonies shows Rakhmaninov's gradual expansion and alteration of the symphonic plan, as well as the formal construction of the individual movements. The First Symphony stays within the boundaries of the student composer, while the Second Symphony expands every aspect of the symphonic blueprint. The Third Symphony is the antithesis of the Second Symphony and turns away from the excesses of that Symphony. Some of the changes in the composer's style can be seen in the tonal relationships and plans of each work. The tonalities of the symphonies and the individual movements are related to and helps determine the formal structure of the movements. For these reasons the important tonalities of each movement are presented on the formal charts. Rakhmaninov's harmonic language, in his early years, was considered daring and progressive, but, at the end of his life, anachronistic and conservative. The harmonic analysis traces and helps evaluate his progression from a daring to an anachronistic composer. The harmonic analysis will include a tabulation of sonority and modulation types, according to type and frequency of use, as well as investigation into some of the representative harmonic progressions of each symphony.

This study examines the function of oral narratives in Michael Ondaatje's representation of history. Ondaatje employs a variety of thematic, structural and stylistic oral narrative strategies in this inquiry. In the course of this work he faces the challenge of translating the open oral quality of the "tale" to the page. Ondaatje's longer prose works counter the printed text's tendency towards stasis through oral narrative and paralinguistic devices. Gradually, the aesthetics of public storytelling inform the process of historiographic revision. Within the oral model, ostensibly verifiable historical facts are no longer subjected to the laws of linear causality; therefore, any central single voice must relinquish its conventional claim to authority. Instead, several "speakers" tell of a shared history. Whereas conventional historiography often focuses on the effect of major historic forces, Ondaatje's oral model reveals how those on the periphery shape and define a given incident. Ultimately, the various participatory agents create the central event in the telling. The study concludes that Ondaatje employs oral narrative strategies to revise monolithic notions of history and to offer an open representation which draws attention to complexities ignored by conventional accounts.
