The inner reality in the dramatic works of Benavente

Sheehan, Robert L.- January 1962 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University. / An investigation of critics representing each of the six decades during which Benavente wrote his plays reveals a fundamental dichotomy of opinion regarding the dramatist's attitude toward human existence. One group, including Pio Baroja, Manuel Bueno, Perez de Ayala, Diaz Plaja and others, maintains that Benavente demonstrates a generally consistent pessimistic and cynical view of man and society. Some among this group believe that this attitude emanates from a materialistic, amoral and even atheistic philosophy on the part of Benavente. The other group of critics, including Gonzalez Blanco, Onis, Lazaro, Valbuena Prat and others, believe that despite an initial pessimism and cynicism, Benavente gradually develops an interest in the inner world of human existence, and moves toward a more idealistic view. The present study establishes and defines the existence of the two opposing schools of Benavente criticism referred to above, and attempts to reconcile them. Our own study, based on an investigation of the complete dramatic and non-dramatic works of Benavente, reveals that the dramatist has a two-fold view of the human condition: 1) "External Reality", or man's environment, presents him with an essentially tragic existence which man cannot alter. 2) "Inner Reality", or man's spiritual and imaginative resources provide him with the means to find refuge, consolation or escape from the tragedy of his environment. La spirale dans l'oeuvre de Normand Chaurette de 1980 à 1986 /

Villemure, Geneviève. January 1997 (has links)
The semantic organization of Normand Chaurette's Reve d'une nuit d'hopital, Provincetown Playhouse ... and Fragments d'une lettre d'adieu ... plays is quite mysterious. It requires scrupulous deciphering in order to understand the author's sense of direction. This is accomplished by studying the movement of madness, that of writing itself. This movement is heliocoidal, spiral shaped; it is a collection of repeated themes nourished with redundancies, replications, insistence and depth. The spiral symbolizes the cyclonic tendency of the characters' torment, a tendency reaching to embrace the heart of this torment. But this insanity cannot be reasonably revealed. The mystery that sustains Chaurette's plays remains complete. / This study brings out the repetitive spiral structures present in each text in order to explain their presence and their dynamic. It is an attempt to spell out what the text's language remains unable to say: the essence of one soul's insanity. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

A critical analysis of the purpose-driven hermeneutic of Rick Warren

Mason, William Bland, Jr. 22 April 2005 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes Rick Warren's hermeneutic based on his writings, conferences, sermons, and Bible studies. Chapter 1 introduces the topic giving special attention to Warren's popularity and the need for an examination of his hermeneutic. Chapter 2 demonstrates that Warren's purpose-driven hermeneutic is based on his understanding of the purpose of the Bible. In particular, Warren's doctrine of the Bible, his Bible study methodology, and his emphasis on the essential nature of application to the task of Bible interpretation are addressed. Chapter 3 examines Warren's preaching as a source for evaluating his hermeneutic. This chapter gives an explanation of his verse-with-verse methodology and how he uses Scripture to develop sermon series, individual messages, and the preaching points within his messages. Chapter 4 addresses Warren's hermeneutic as it is revealed in his writings and conferences. The chapter focuses on The Purpose Driven Church and its associated conference and materials, The Purpose Driven Life and the various Bible studies associated with the "40 Days of Purpose," and Warren's other books. Chapter 5 is devoted to Warren's use of translations and paraphrases as key to understanding his hermeneutic. An overall list of translations and paraphrases used by Warren is given along with a statistical analysis of the frequency of translation usage in his various works. A final chapter offers a conclusion to the study. An evaluation of overall trends, strengths, and weakness of Warren's purpose-driven hermeneutic is included. This chapter also gives a summary of the conclusions that the research has supported and an examination of some implications of Warren's hermeneutic to the greater field of church growth preaching. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
