John Francis Bray, the author of "Labour's Wrongs and Labour's Remedy, " was born in the United States of America in 1809. Until recent years, nothing was known of his history beyond the fact that he was the author of the book mentioned. Dr. Esther Lowenthal, in her thesis on the "Ricardian Socialists," wrote in 1911, "of Bray's life, nothing is known." Mr. H. P. Quack, an American banker who devoted a volume of his seven volume work, "The Socialists: Persons and Systems," to forgotten figures from the England of the 19th century, gives a chapter of twenty-six pages to Bray, but says, "of his life we know nothing. His name is written in flowing water." About twenty-five years ago, the late John Edwards discovered a number of letters written by Bray and his brother Charles, which shed some light upon the mystery. It was, however, left for Miss Agnes Inglis, of Ann Arbor Michigan, who, in 1937, traced Bray's daughter-in-law to Pontiac, Michigan, to find all that was missing, including diaries and a brief sketch of his life, prepared for publication by Bray himself. The latter was written in 1890 and 1891, when he was in ill-health, and when, unfortunately, his mind was not as clear as one might have wished. Some facts which have been omitted can, however, be supplied from the Journal.
