Low-spin states in 102-108Zr in the Interacting Boson Model context

Rodriguez Triguero, Camino January 2013 (has links)
The region of the nuclear chart around A~100 is an area of structural changes where different shapes coexist and therefore, an interesting place to study structural evolution and test nuclear models. Within the clement that populate this region, zirconium is one which is expected to present well deformed states, but for which little experimental data has been measured so far. The structure of the 102-108Zr nuclei has been studied using the Interactiug Boson Model (IBM). Energy states and transition probabilities have been predicted and tested using the limited amount of existing experimental data. However, the results of these calculations produced several possibilities, so knowledge about non-yrast. states is needed in order to deepen the understanding of the structural changes in zirconium nuclei. Therefore a. series of experiments to measure non-yrast states of 102- 108Zr are required. A new technique, for separating different states of nuclei, has been developed and tested at the University of Jyvaskyla, using the IGISOL III facility for the known case of 100Nb β-decay into 100 Mo. This technique has been successfully extended to allow the separate study of the gamma.-ray decay of states populated by the different parent states. Lower spin states of 102- 108Zr are populated via beta-decay from 102- 108y' In order to measure the non-yrast states of 102- 108Zr post-trap online spectroscopy will be used at IGISOL IV. IGISOL IV is the improved version of IGISOL 111 and is currently under construction. Part of my Ph.D. consisted of helping with the development of IGISOL IV, the improvements of this facility are explained in this thesis alongside its operation and several tests performed during 2012.

Studying anomalous WWγ couplings and developing the global calorimeter trigger control system for the CMS experiment

Huckvale, Benedict James January 2009 (has links)
The rate of decay of the process W -> Wγ is well-defined by the Standard Model, so measured deviation is a strong but indirect indicator of non-Standard Model physics. Deviations of this coupling strength can be parameterized, in a model independent, general sense, into two parameters, Δk and λ.

Spectral data for G-Higgs bundles

Schaposnik, Laura P. January 2013 (has links)
We develop a new geometric method of understanding principal G-Higgs bundles through their spectral data, for G a real form of a complex Lie group. In particular, we consider the case of G a split real form, as well as G = SL(2,R), U(p,p), SU(p,p), and Sp(2p,2p). Further, we give some applications of our results, and discuss open questions.

Measurement of high Q² charged-current deep inelastic scattering with polarised positron beams using the ZEUS detector at HERA

Oliver, Katie Rosemarie January 2011 (has links)
This thesis presents measurements of charged current deep inelastic scattering cross sections in e+p collisions with longitudinally polarised positron beams. The measurements are based on data taken by the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider during the 2006-2007 run- ning period. The data sample has an integrated luminosity of 132 pb-1 and was taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeY. The total cross section has been measured at positive and negative values of the longitu- dinal polarisation of the positron beam (Pe). In addition, the single differential cross sections dδ / dQ2, dδ / dx and dδ / dy have been measured for Q2 > 200 Ge y2, also using both positively and negatively polarised positron beams. The reduced cross section has been measured in nine bins of Q2 in the kinematic range 280 < Q2 < 30000 Gey2 and 0.0078 < x < 0.42. The results are compared against the descriptions provided by the CTEQ6.6, MSTW 2008, HEARPDF1.0 and ZEUS-JETS PDFs. In general, the measured cross sections are well described by these predictions. Based on the measurement of the total cross section as a function of the polarisation of the positron beam, a lower limit on the mass of a hypothetical right-handed W boson has been extracted from the upper limit of the cross-section at Pe = -1. This limit is complementary to the limits obtained from direct searches (for example at CDF and D0) because the limit presented herein is for a space-like vV, whereas for direct searches, the limit on the mass of a time-like W boson is obtained. The results of this analysis have been published and have been included ill the determination of the HERAPDF theoretical prediction and also in HI and ZEUS combined results.

Διπλή διάσπαση βήτα

Τσινταβής, Ιωάννης 07 October 2011 (has links)
Double beta decay research has a major role in neutrino physics. It is considered the best way to examine the nature of neutrinos and to determine their mass. From an experimental point of view, nine different isotopes are being used in the experiments. After a general introduction, a brief discussion about neutrino physics and their role in beta decays will follow. The experimental approach, the difficulties that we face and the current double beta decay experiments will be discussed, followed by another summary of the ideas and the proposals of the future experiments.
