Use Of Aluminium Dross For Slag Treatment In Secondary Steelmaking To Decrease Amount Of Reducible Oxides In Ladle Furnace

In this study it was aimed to analyse refining processes such as decreasing reducible oxide content of ladle slag with affecting parameters in low carbon aluminum killed grades and for the research Erdemir low carbon steel grades 7112K and 7110K are selected. There was a negative correlation between reducible oxide amount in ladle slag and desulphurization capacity of ladle slag with metal-slag reaction and steel internal cleanliness. To refine these properties of slag, aluminium dross, which was aluminium production discard and has a metallic content around %30-35 was used and after ladle treatment operation, decrease in reducible oxides such as FetO, MnO, SiO2, P2O5 was analysed. After the study it was observed that 653 kg. of converter slag leaked during tapping of steel and SiO2 ve P2O5 content of ladle slag had negligible change after ladle treatment. According to the results, it is observed that initial %10-12 (FetO + MnO) content was reduced to % 4.5-5.0 (FetO + MnO) after ladle treatment with use of aluminium dross. Beside of this, in order to see the effect of this slag reduction on steel cleanliness, low carbon aluminium killed grades were compared with ultra-low carbon aluminium killed grades having (FetO + MnO) content of %16-17 in slag. It was seen that reoxidation of aluminium (loss of dissolved aluminium) during continuous casting for ULC (ultra-low carbon) gradesis 144 ppm but for LC grades it was 94 ppm and it was being expected that ULC steel group would have higher inclusion content after casting.

Use Of Borates As An Activating Agent For Drilling Mud Bentonites

In drilling technologies, Na-bentonite-water mixtures are used as drilling mud. As the reserves of sodium-bentonite decline, calcium or low-quality bentonites are activated with inorganic salts and/or treated with different types of polymers as an alternative to Na-bentonite. The quality of such bentonites, commonly referred to as extended bentonite may deteriorate under severe drilling conditions, such as / bacterial activity, high temperature etc. It was considered that borates could prevent the deterioration of extended bentonites due to their well known bactericide properties. This study involves the use of Na-Borate as an activating agent for bentonites in place of the commonly used Na-carbonate. The effects of Na-borate on the rheological and filtrate behaviours of two different bentonites, namely, Edirne Bentonite (E-Ben) and &Ccedil / ankiri Bentonite (C-Ben) were investigated. The results were evaluated based on API standards and in comparison to those of Na-carbonate activated bentonites. It was found that Na-borate could be used as a bentonite activator, although somewhat higher dosages (3,78% Na2O equivalent for E-Ben and 0,76% Na2O equivalent for C-Ben) than Na-carbonate (2,90% Na2O equivalent for E-Ben and 0,58% Na2O equivalent for C-Ben) are necessary to obtain the same rheological properties. In terms of aging, it was determined that aging had no adverse effect on v the rheological and filtrate properties of bentonite treated with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyanionic cellulose (PAC), but rheological properties of bentonites treated with xanthan gum were found to deteriorate upon aging. The presence of Na-borate in the mud appears to alleviate this adverse effect.

Computer Modeling Of The Initial Cavern For Beypazari Trona Ore On The Basis Of Leaching Rates, Insoluble Contents And Thickness Of Trona Layer

Trona ore located in Beypazari is extracted by solution mining method with well pair connected by directional drilling technology. This thesis covers the determination of the dimensions of the initial (vertical) caverns formed in underground by use of a computer modeling (trademark: WinUbro/Poland) on the basis of horizontal and vertical leaching rates. The leaching rates were determined using the trona core samples from the ore deposit. The effect of insoluble content and the thickness of trona layer and solvent temperature on the initial cavern dimension were studied. The outcome of this study showed that the better the trona layer quality from the point of view of thickness and insoluble content, the wider the vertical cavern size is. In 1 m thick trona layer with 20% insolubles, it is possible to develop caverns of 6 m width, which is the minimum size for well pair connection. On the other hand, it is determined that the effective leaching time depends mainly on solvent temperature.

An Investigation Of The Principles Of Laboratory-scale Particle-bed Comminution

The objective of this thesis is to investigate the principles of laboratory-scale particle bed comminution in a piston-die-press. The feed materials used in this investigation are quartz and calcite which were stage-crushed and dry screened to produce 3.35 x 2.36, 2.36 x 1.7, 1.7 x 1.18, 1.18 x 0.85, and minus 0.85mm size fractions. First, these narrow size fractions (excluding minus 0.85mm fraction) were comminuted under different pressures to determine the baseline for energy utilization. Then, these size fractions and minus 0.85mm size fraction were proportionately mixed to produce feeds of three different size distributions having three different Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann (GGS) size distribution moduli (m=0.5, 0.7, and 0.9), and comminuted under different bed pressures of appropriate magnitudes to generate a reasonable range of specific breakage energy inputs. As a result of the experiments carried out, it can be concluded that higher amounts of fines were obtained from calcite samples than quartz at all narrow-range size fractions and distribution moduli. Furthermore, experimental results showed that the feed material having the widest size distribution (m = 0.5) showed more resistance to size reduction when compared with narrow-size fractions, which led to increase in energy consumption due to the presence of higher amounts of fines. Tests samples with distribution moduli of 0.7 and 0.9 showed higher resistance to size reduction than narrow-size samples, but the reduction ratios achieved with the size distributed samples were higher than those achieved with the narrow-size samples. In addition, by using t-curves (t50 and t10) the amounts of breakage of different samples were compared. Consequently, the distribution modulus of 0.9 gave better breakage results in terms of expended energy and amount of breakage than all narrow-size fractions, especially for the relatively soft mineral calcite.

Pore Network Modeling Of Fissured And Vuggy Carbonates

Carbonate rocks contain most of the world&rsquo / s proven hydrocarbon reserves. It is essential to predict flow properties and understand flow mechanisms in carbonates for estimating hydrocarbon recovery accurately. Pore network modeling is an effective tool in determination of flow properties and investigation of flow mechanisms. Topologically equivalent pore network models yield accurate results for flow properties. Due to their simple pore structure, sandstones are generally considered in pore scale studies and studies involving carbonates are limited. In this study, in order to understand flow mechanisms and wettability effects in heterogeneous carbonate rocks, a novel pore network model was developed for simulating two-phase flow. The constructed model was composed of matrix, fissure and vug sub domains and the sequence of fluid displacements was simulated typical by primary drainage followed by water flooding. Main mechanisms of imbibition, snap-off, piston like advance and pore body filling, were also considered. All the physically possible fluid configurations in the pores, vugs and fissures for all wettability types were examined. For configurations with a fluid layer sandwiched between other phases, the range of capillary pressures for the existence of such a layer was also evaluated. Then, results of the proposed model were compared with data available in literature. Finally, effects of wettability and pore structure on flow properties were examined by assigning different wettability conditions and porosity features. It was concluded that the proposed pore network model successfully represented two phase flow in fissured and vuggy carbonate rocks.

Numerical Simulation Of Germencik Geothermal Field

The Germencik Omerbeyli geothermal field is considered to be one of the most important geothermal fields in Turkey. A numerical modeling study was carried out to simulate the response of the field to different production/injection scenarios. The reservoir performance evaluation was based on the numerical simulation of the reservoir behavior using the simulation code TOUGH2. The numerical simulation model includes a total area of 85.8 km2 and extends from the surface at +330 m msl (mean sea level) to a depth of -4581 m msl. Through a trial and error process, the natural state model was satisfactorily matched with the initial temperature and pressure data measured at the wells. The natural state model was further calibrated using the long term flow test (LTFT) data conducted in 2006, including OB-6 and OB-9 as flowing wells and OB-8 as an injection well. The model was then used to predict reservoir performance under different production/injection scenarios over the next 30 years. Forecast runs showed that the pressure declines almost equally in all areas, consistent with the high permeability and connectivity of the reservoir, which had been established from the LTFT.

Cleaning Of Sirnak Karatepe Asphaltites

Asphaltite is petroleum originated substance and formed by metamorphism. Turkey has 82 million tons of asphaltite reserves in Sirnak and Silopi region of Southeastern part of Anatolia. The proximate analysis of Sirnak Karatepe asphaltite sample indicated that the ash and sulfur content were 46.86 % and 5.56 %, respectively. In this study, Sirnak Karatepe asphaltite sample was concentrated by gravity separation and flotation methods. The aim of this research was to decrease the ash and sulfur content below 20% and 2%, respectively, which are the requirements of Sirnak Municipality. Gravity based cleaning equipments such as multi gravity separator, shaking table and Falcon concentrator gave no satisfactory results in terms of ash and sulfur removal. The products with lowest ash content were obtained with Falcon concentrator after two stage cleaning of -100 micrometer feed. Flotation parameters of Karatepe asphaltite were also examined during the study. As a result of multi-stage flotation with stage addition of Collector Accoal 9630 and depressant Na2SiO3 , ash content of asphaltite was decreased to 17.59 % with 15.31 % combustible recovery. Even though the ash content specification met by flotation, the sulfur content of cleaned asphaltite (6.68 % S) was more than the sulfur limit of Sirnak Municipality.

Hydrometallurgical Processing Of Lateritic Nickel Ores

The objective of this thesis study is to recover nickel and cobalt at maximum efficiency from column leach liquor of lateritic nickel ores existing in G&ouml / rdes region of Manisa by performing various hydrometallurgical methods under the optimum conditions. This column leach solution of nontronite type lateritic nickel ore was initially neutralized and purified from its basic impurities by a two stage iron removal process under the optimum conditions determined experimentally. Then, nickel and cobalt were precipitated in the form of mixed hydroxide precipitate from the purified leach solution by a two stage precipitation method called &ldquo / MHP&rdquo / and a manganese removal process was carried out also under the optimum conditions determined. By decreasing Mn concentration with this process to an acceptable level yielding at most 10% Mn in hydroxide precipitate, it was possible to produce a qualified MHP product suitable to the current marketing and standard conditions. As a result of this thesis study, the experiments conducted showed that by recycle leaching with sulfuric acid about 81% of Ni and 63% of Co in the lateritic nickel ore (9.72 kg Ni / ton of ore and 0.28 kg Co / ton of ore) could be extracted as mixed hydroxide precipitate by MHP method. The MHP product contains 41.9% Ni, 1.0% Co, 2.3% Mn, 0.06% Al, 1.5% Mg, 0.02% Fe, 0.01% Cr, 0.25% Zn, 0.03% Cu and 4.73% S.

Application Of Ohsas 18000 To Bigadic Boron Work To Improve The Existent Working Conditions

OHSAS 18000 Occupational Health and Safety Assessment System Series have a special importance to mining. OHSAS standardization aims to provide secure, more tranquil and healthier working space to the employees by means of establishing an assessment system. As mining activities are generally carried out in high risk environments, OHSAS has been improved and has increased its importance for mining in the world. In this study, Bigadi&ccedil / Boron Work is taken as a case for the application of OHSAS 18001. Theoretical information about OHSAS and risk assessment is provided, and some exemplifying mines that implemented this standard are given to illustrate their benefits. All possible hazard sources are identified and a &ldquo / Hazard Source Inventory&rdquo / is proposed. Together with this hazard source inventory, a risk assessment method is developed for Bigadi&ccedil / Boron Work. Several tasks are evaluated according to this proposed form. In order to define policy, principles and structure of Occupational Health and Safety Assessment System, an &ldquo / OHSA Manual&rdquo / is prepared. Several sets of standard forms were prepared and recommended for Bigadi&ccedil / Boron Work. Consistency throughout the organization was established by means of these created standard documents, procedures and forms. Proposed Job Safety Analysis form can be used to identify, analyze and record the steps involved in performing a specific task, and the existing or potential safety and health hazards associated with each step. Several safe job procedures were also prepared with the help of the risk assessment process. In addition to this, an &ldquo / Emergency Plan&rdquo / is proposed for enterprise to prevent loss of life, property and information, and provide safety in case of any emergency or natural disaster. An &ldquo / OHS Audit Instrument&rdquo / is suggested for the Bigadi&ccedil / Boron Work that will play a key role for continuous improvement of the system. Audits are integral part of OHSAS in order to identify hazards, improve health and safety conditions, and check compliance with regulations. These studies also show that there are some problems in the implementation of the system. The main problem is ineffective data recording and keeping. Lack of consciousness of employees and low commitment of top management constitute another important difficulty. Although these problems are commonly encountered in practice, applying OHSAS 18000 standard is still worthwhile method of improving work environment.

Topkaya January 2011, 91 pages The aim of this thesis study was to investigate and find the most cost effective way of extracting nickel and cobalt into the pregnant leach solution (PLS) from G&ouml / rdes lateritic nickel and cobalt ore by means of sulphuric acid leaching under high temperature and high pressure conditions.The high pressure acid leach (HPAL) experiments were conducted with nontronitic and limonitic types of G&ouml / rdes lateritic nickel ore, respectively. Leaching experiments of nontronite ore have shown that almost all of the nickel and cobalt contained in the nontronitic ore were easily extracted into the (PLS). Therefore, the rest of the experiments were concentrated on difficult to leach limonitic sample when compared with the nontronitic one, and higher nickel and cobalt extractions were aimed to be obtained. By taking economic and technical considerations into account, the basic (HPAL) process parameters for the limonitic sample were optimized as / leaching at 255 &deg / C with a particle size of 100% -850 &mu / with 0.30 sulphuric acid to ore weight ratio in 1 hour of leaching duration. The experiments were conducted with 30% solids ratio and it was found that 87.3% of nickel and 88.8% of cobalt present in the limonitic ore could be extracted into the pregnant leach solution. Nevertheless, these results were found to be below the desired values. Therefore, the possible reasons of this behavior were investigated and the presence of hematite mineral in the limonitic ore was found to be the most probable one. Therefore, in order to dissolve the nickel and cobalt present in the hematite mineral, the additions of HCl, ferrous ions, cuprous ions and sulphur were tried, respectively and they were found to be beneficial in order to increase the degree of nickel and cobalt extractions.
