  • The Global ETD Search service is a free service for researchers to find electronic theses and dissertations. This service is provided by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
Our metadata is collected from universities around the world. If you manage a university/consortium/country archive and want to be added, details can be found on the NDLTD website.

The recent sediments of the area between the Loughor and Towy estuaries, Carmarthen Bay

Khan, Abdul Salam January 1968 (has links)
The area described in this thesis forms a part of the ENE margin of Carmarthen Bay. This near-shore and littoral region lies between the Towy estuary in the north and Loughor estuary in the south. The sedimentary sub-environments distinguished in the area include a beach, sand dunes, estuarine sand flats, mud flats and a salt marsh. The quarterly surveys, carried out along a number of fixed lines are used to show seasonal changes over the Central part of the beach. The quarterly volumetric changes were used in assessing the trend of accretion or erosion over a longer period and also of the pattern of sediment movement in different parts of the beach. A coarse fraction study, granulometric analyses, carbonate content and quartz-feldspar ratio tests were carried out to determine parameters which would make the recognition of different sub-environments of deposition possible. No single parameter was found which adequately defined all the sub-environments studied. Surface and subsurface sedimentary structures have been examined in the field and in the laboratory and an attempt has been made to differentiate the sediments of the various subenvironments by these characteristics. Finally, from the information gathered during this study, the dynamics of sedimentation, source of sediments and possible stratigraphic sequence are discussed.
