Mental rotation and a drawing based training regiment

The Current project investigated whether a drawing based training regiment will improve performance on a mental rotation test involving the same figures drawn during the training. There were two experimental groups: drawing and non-drawing. The participants' responses were measured using reaction time and accuracy. The main . effects found were for angle of rotation and whether the shape was familiar or not. Shapes were considered familiar if they were drawn in the drawing training. Contrary to the research hypothesis the drawing training did not have an effect upon the participant's performance on the mental rotation task. Further research is needed to fully examine the relationship between a training using drawing and its effect on mental rotation. The results from this study are discussed with implications for fields such as architecture baggage screening and dentistry.

The Effect on Learning of Geographic Instruction Designed for Students' Verbal and Spatial Abilities

The purpose of this study was to compare student scores on geographic skills in the experimental group with student scores on geographic skills in the control group after adjustment was made in teaching methods and learning materials for verbal and spatial ability for students in the experimental group. Hypotheses tested at the .05 level were as follows. 1. Females would score higher than males on a criterion measure of verbal ability. 2. Males would score higher than females on a criterion measure of spatial ability. 3. Experimental/verbal students would score higher on a geography skills posttest. 4. Experimental/spatial students would score higher on a geography skills posttest. 5. The experimental group would score higher than the control group on a geography skills posttest. The sample was 150 high school United States History students in a medium-sized North Texas school district. Analysis of covariance was used to analyze results of the study of six classes after fifteen days of instruction in physical geography concepts. Experimental classes received geographic instruction directed to verbal and spatial abilities; control group classes received traditional geographic instruction which utilized textbook, lecture, and whole-group instruction. Three high schools participated in the study. Conclusions were that males and females did not differ significantly on verbal and spatial abilities. Values between pretest and posttest for both experimental and control groups were significant, but when adjusted for the covariates of verbal and spatial ability, control/verbal learners' posttest scores were significantly higher than experimental/verbal learners' posttest scores. Spatial/ experimental learners' posttest scores and spatial/control learners' posttest scores were compared, and the result was no significant difference when cell means were adjusted for the higher spatial/experimental learners' spatial ability. The practice of teaching geography through the use of textbook and whole-group instruction resulted in larger learning gains than the practice of using different materials directed toward different learning styles within the same classroom and with no textbook.

The focus of this study was to determine the unique contribution of I.Q., gender, instructional organization, time on the computer, classroom instructional time, ethnicity and total instructional time to the predictability of achievement gain in a computer-assisted instructional setting in reading. The sample consisted of 2,000 students in grades three and five from a large suburban school district in the Dallas - Fort Worth area. The students were given the Iowa Test of Basic Skills to determine reading achievement gains and the Cognitive Abilities Test to determine I.Q. levels. The study was conducted over a five month period during the 1984 - 1985 school year. Using multiple regression, the data were analyzed.

Abstract This paper is based on the study of a special education teacher who tutoring a particular child in a kindergarten, evaluating the effects of the case of its social abilities and cognitive abilities learning after a tutoring service. The study object is a heavy degree of retarded child with the age of five years and five months old. This paper is to apply the method of quality case study, starting from the evaluation of the basic ability of the case to involve in a four times of social abilities learning program and tutoring, for one year of period. It is to make an essential record in detail of the social abilities in the process of the cognitive abilities learning and performance, and to re-evaluate the result and its effects of the case situation after the itinerant teaching service. This study found : (A) A good improvement in the social abilities of the case, by means of the tutoring and a four-times social teaching program, especially of the interaction with its peer group , and also with a good progress in the adaptability to the environment, but not showing the eminent result in the interaction with adults. (B) A good improvement in the cognitive abilities learning, with the increasing of the time length in the concentration about the aspects of seeing, listening, and playing, a good progress in the cognition of self-conception, and basic skills of learning in writing, reading. The case has gradually developed a reading habit. As to the numeric conception and memory shows little progress, but not found in the improvement of the logic thinking.

Sleep, Depressive Symptoms and Cognition in Older Adults and Caregivers of Persons with Dementia

Caregivers of persons with dementia, who are often older adults, report sleep disturbance, high rates of depressive symptoms and may be at risk for impaired cognition. This dissertation examined sleep, depressive symptoms, and cognition in older adults and caregivers of persons with dementia. The aims of the review of literature were to understand, in community dwelling adults 60 years and older, the relationships among sleep parameters (sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency, total sleep time, and general sleep complaints), and the domains of cognition (Executive Function, Attention, Episodic Memory, Working Memory, Processing Speed), and global cognition. Based on the findings, the research on the association of subjective sleep parameters and cognition is inconclusive and there is insufficient evidence to confirm or deny the existence of a relationship between objective sleep parameters and cognition. The methods section examined whether in adults 60 years and older, Radloff’s postulated 4-factor structure replicates across Afro-Caribbean Americans, African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and European-Americans and determine whether there is evidence for measurement invariance across the four ethnic groups in their responses to the Center for Epidemiological Depression Scale (CES-D) statements. Radloff’s postulated 4-factor model fit the data adequately and the results suggest that there is evidence for configural and partial metric invariance. The final section examined the relationships among subjective sleep parameters (Sleep Onset Latency, Wake After Sleep Onset, Total Sleep Time, Time in Bed, Sleep Efficiency, Sleep Quality), depressive symptoms, and, crystallized, fluid and total cognition in caregivers of persons with dementia with poor sleep. Based on the findings, depressive symptoms also did not mediate the ability of the sleep parameters to predict cognitive performance. With the knowledge that there are potential associations among sleep parameters, depressive symptoms and cognition in caregivers, healthcare providers should collect baseline assessments on sleep, depressive symptoms and cognition from caregivers and monitor them on an ongoing basis to identify changes and intervene in a timely manner. More research studies incorporating measures to capture sleep variability and similar cognitive measures, are needed to clarify the relationships both in older adults and caregivers of persons with dementia.

Computer Games: Psychomotor Sequelae and Personological Covariates

This study investigated the relationship between the degree of involvement with video games of 72 male university students with performance on pilot screening tests of psychomotor abilities, perceptual abilities, and cognitive style, and also with several personological variables, school performance, locus of control, sociability, and social presence. Additionally, the effects of experience with a video game on the learning of perceptual and psychomotor skills was examined for different levels of previous computer game involvement. It was found that those students who began playing at earlier ages and who more recently played the most demonstrated increased psychomotor abilities, and those abilities appeared to be enhanced by video game play. Greater amounts of time per week spent with computer games were found to correlate with increased facility in learning perceptual skills on computerized instrumentation, and with relative underachievement in school. No systematic relationship was found between degree of video game involvement and measures of sociability, social presence, and field dependence-independence. The study concluded that computer games may have effects upon those individuals who play them, but the effects may not be as negative as many people believe.

In the research part of the work will be focused on testing students' sports focused on athletics and unsportsmanlike classes of secondary school and post-processing and evaluation of results. Methodology: data collection, guided interview, comparison Conclusion: Finding a suitable test profile and preparing the necessary means for the measurement of target groups. Evaluation of results and processing them into charts and graphs. A group of athletes achieved better results than physically inactive students. Group of athletes achieved a slightly above-average overall results, the group of inactive students achieved a slightly below- average. Within a group, not a big difference between boys and girls. This study is about children in grade three with talent in mathematics and how to develop their talent in mathematics lessons. My questions are how to teach with regard on the way teachers work and used material? How do teacher pay attention to children with talents in mathematics and how they work to motivate and keep developing the children? The main method I used was qualitative observations backed up by interviews. The study was done in two Swedish schools. For interpreting the results I used the sociocultural perspective and motivation theory. The result shows that both schools work a lot with communication to develop mathematical abilities and to identify those students with talent in mathematics. The main difference between the two schools is that one uses material from the grade above while the other uses extra material from the same grade to develop those students. Otherwise both schools were quite equal, they worked with problem solving, mathematics games and digital tools such as computers.
