Calcium and Potassium Accumulation in Lettuce under Different Nitrogen RegimesWeil, Sara 23 November 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Nutrient accumulation in vegetable crops is declining. New varieties, selected for high yield, may be subject to a dilution effect of nutrient concentration. Alternatively, soil fertility may be to blame. Here, we investigate how nitrogen fertilization can enhance or suppress calcium and potassium content in two lettuce varieties already known to accumulate high or low amounts of these nutrients. Effects of varying the ammonium:nitrate ratio and effects of calcium carbonate buffering on plant growth by mass and on uptake and accumulation of potassium and calcium in two lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars, Two Star and Red Deer Tongue, were investigated in three greenhouse hydroponic experiments in which ammonium supplied none, 6%, 12%, 25%, 50%, 75% or all of the nitrogen. Ammonium, supplied as the sole nitrogen source (15 mM), was toxic under buffered or unbuffered conditions. It limited growth and concentrations of potassium and calcium in lettuce leaves. Proportions of ammonium-N greater than 50% of total N nutrition severely curtailed growth and nutrient accumulation for both cultivars. For both cultivars, optima for all three variables occurred in treatments that contained less than 50% NH4+-N in the total N supply. Application of calcium carbonate buffer did not result in improved maxima for growth and shoot potassium or shoot calcium concentrations compared to the best responses in unbuffered solutions. However, supplying calcium carbonate buffer did raise the minima for growth and shoot potassium and shoot calcium concentration. Both cultivars in buffered solutions compared to unbuffered solutions had significantly greater values for growth and for shoot potassium or shoot calcium concentration in treatments that contained 50% ammonium-N or greater in the total N supply. Although buffering relieved symptoms of ammonium toxicity, it did not eliminate symptoms, confirming the work of other researchers that ammonium toxicity is not due solely to acidification of the root-zone and that buffering has an effect on the capacity of plants to tolerate ammonium nutrition. Supplying nitrogen with ammonium:nitrate ratios in which nitrate predominates enhances yield and accumulation of calcium and potassium in lettuce. Two Star, the modern variety, is more ammonium-sensitive than Red Deer Tongue, the heirloom variety, if calcium carbonate buffering is not provided.

This dissertation is a collection of essays on economic growth in the presence of asymmetric information between lenders and borrowers in the credit market.
The first chapter considers an endogenous growth model where lenders and capital producing borrowers are asymmetrically informed as to the borrower’s ability to successfully operate an investment project. In contrast to the existing literature, lenders can induce self selection either by rationing a fraction of borrowers, or by using a costly screening technology, or by a mix of the two. The growth rate of the economy and the equilibrium contract’s form are mutually dependent and are determined jointly. It is shown that a decline in the screening cost (representing a more sophisticated financial sector), paradoxically, may lower output growth and that benefit of an advanced financial sector becomes evident only when a threshold level sophistication is crossed.
The second chapter draws a connection between financial development and economic growth in a neoclassical growth model. It is shown that at a low level of capital accumulation, lenders separates the borrowers by denying credit to a fraction of borrowers. As capital accumulates, credit market may function more like a modern credit market with less credit rationing and with an increasing number of lenders purchasing information to separate borrowers. The transition from rationing to screening results in a higher capital accumulation path and a higher steady state capital stock. The present chapter also highlights the conditions under which transition from rationing to screening regime will not occur and the economy may become trapped in a steady state with credit rationing and with a low level of capital.
The third chapter of the dissertation analyzes the effect of inflation rate on the growth rate of output via its effect on the agents’ behavior in the credit market. It is shown that with inflation rate exceeding a critical level, a sharp fall in the growth rate of output takes place as the incentive to purchase information vanishes and borrowers are exclusively separated by means of credit rationing. This chapter also examines the panel data for a large group of countries for the period 1961-88, and shows that the relationship between the inflation rate and the growth rate of output closely follows the prediction of the theoretical model. / Ph. Electronic Transport in Highly Mismatched InAs Films on GaAsZhang, Yao 07 February 2014 (has links)
Electrical properties of Si- and Mg-doped InAs epitaxial layers grown by MOCVD were studied by performing magneto-transport measurements at different temperatures, from 300 K down to 1.2 K. The longitudinal magnetoresistance and Hall effect indicate a three-band system existing in n-type (p-type) InAs, which consists of the surface accumulation (inversion) layer, the bulk electron (hole) layer, and the nucleation layer. Therefore, a classical parabolic background in magnetoresistance due to multi-carrier occurs at low fields. With the magnetic field being further applied, a linear magnetoresistance caused by inhomogeneities is revealed. At liquid helium temperature, the Shubnikov-de Haas magneto-oscillations are also observed. These transport characterizations provide a means of analyzing the band structure at the InAs surface. In a set of n-type InAs epilayers with Si doped at different levels, the bulk electron density increases as the doping level increases. The increased ionized impurities lead to lower electron mobilities due to more Coulomb scatterings. For all the n-type InAs films, except the two active layers (surface and the bulk), the nucleation layer contributes to the film conductivity as well with an electron density of ~ 5 x 10¹⁷ cm⁻³ and a mobility of ~ 2000 cm²}/Vs. In a cooldown process, the electron density of each layer slightly and monotonically decreases whereas the mobility experiences a maximum from the competition between phonon scatterings and Coulomb scatterings. The phonon scattering overwhelms the Coulomb scatting at high temperatures, but declines as temperature decreases, thus the mobility increases. Around 100 K, the temperature-independent ionized impurity scattering becomes comparable with and starts exceeding the phonon scattering, as temperature further lowered, the screening effect of the Coulomb scattering is weakened because of the decreased carrier densities. As a result, the mobility starts dropping. The maximum mobility corresponds to a minimum resistance, which explains the non-trivial temperature dependence of the resistance in the cooldown history. For the p-type InAs film, the doping with Mg in the course of MOCVD growth allows us to obtain a large hole density and a low mobility at 300 K. At low temperatures, holes are frozen out, and a strong negative magnetoresistance with a dip at 0 field are observed, which is the antilocalization signal from accumulation electrons. This is a strong technique to probe the surface quantum states and derive the phase coherence length and the spin flip length of surface electrons. / Master of Science

To Mix or Not to Mix: Performance and Management of Diverse Cover Crop MixturesWolters, Bethany Rose 27 January 2020 (has links)
Cover crops (CC) are planted in between cash crops to improve soil quality and to supply nitrogen (N) to cash crops through biological N fixation or soil N scavenging. Most producers use single species CC, in part because potential benefits of using mixtures of three or more CC species are poorly understood. A three-year study was initiated at Painter, Virginia to observe effects of CC mixtures on a no-till (NT) corn (Zea mays), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and soybean (Glycine max) rotation to measure CC performance, N cycling, cash crop yield, and soil quality in a sandy, low organic matter soil. Twelve treatments were created with conventional tillage (CT), NT, no CC control, and monoculture or CC mixtures of 3 to 9 species. Corn was grown in year 3 in all 12 treatments and four N rates were applied (0, 56, 112 and 156 kg N ha-1). Cover crop biomass, N accumulation, CC C:N ratio, and corn and soybean yield were measured annually. Soil bulk density, compaction, infiltration rate, pH, electrical conductivity, soil respiration, earthworm counts, soil microbial respiration, and soil microbial biomass carbon (C) after three years of CC. Cover crop biomass production varied significantly each year (5633 kg ha-1 in year 1, 755 kg ha-1 in year 2, 5370 kg ha-1 in year 3) due to climate and agronomic parameters, but a CC mixture always produced the highest biomass at termination. Nitrogen accumulation was strongly correlated with biomass production (R2= 0.94) and followed the same trend due to all CC having C:N < 30:1. Corn and soybean yields in years 1 and 2 were not significantly different, but corn yield was significantly affected by treatment and N fertilizer rate in year 3. After 3 years, soil respiration, earthworm populations and soil microbial biomass C increased in CC compared to CT without CC. However, infiltration rate, bulk density, microbial respiration, pH did not improve or declined compared to CT. In conclusion, adding CC mixtures to crop rotations shows promise for producing high CC biomass, accumulating N, and increasing crop yields, while improving some soil quality parameters on sandy low organic matter soils. / Doctor of Philosophy / Cover crop (CC) are planted in between cash crops to protect the soil from erosion, improve soil quality, and supply N to next cash crop through biological N fixation or soil N scavenging. Traditionally, CC were single species, but new CC methodologies utilize mixtures of three or more species planted together to protect soils as well as produce high biomass to suppress weeds, conserve soil moisture, and improve soil quality. A long-term study was initiated in fall 2014 in Painter, VA to observe CC mixture effects on no-till (NT) corn (Zea mays), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and soybean (Glycine max) rotations on CC performance, N cycling, cash crop yield, and soil quality of a sandy, low organic matter soil. Twelve treatments were created that compared NT rotations with CC monocultures, CC mixtures of 3-9 species, and without CC. In the third year corn was grown in all 12 rotations and four N rates were applied (0, 56, 112 and 156 kg N ha-1). To evaluate CC mixture performance in rotations, CC biomass, CC N accumulation and corn and soybean yield was measured over three years. To evaluate changes in soil quality, nine soil physical, chemical and biological soil properties were measured after three years of NT and CC. Biomass production varied significantly each experimental year (5633 kg ha-1 in year 1, 755 kg ha-1 in year 2, 5370 kg ha-1 in year 3) due to climate and agronomic differences, but CC mixtures were the highest biomass producing CC each spring and accumulated the highest amount of N. Cover crop mixtures had equal corn and soybean yield as CC monocultures. In year 3 corn yield and was greater in treatments with CC than in treatments without CC and was greater in legume dominated monocultures and mixtures than majority grass CC mixtures and monocultures. After 3 years of CC and NT, some soil quality parameters improved. Indicators of soil biology (soil respiration, earthworm populations, and soil microbial biomass C) increased in CC treatments. However, some soil physical and chemical properties (infiltration rate, bulk density, pH and EC) did not improve. In conclusion, adding CC mixtures to crop rotations shows promise for producing high CC biomass, accumulating N, and increasing crop yields, while also improving some soil quality parameters that are important for agricultural systems.

Le développement des activités industrielles et agricoles du siècle dernier a eu pour conséquence le rejet de substances chimiques dans l’environnement, qui contaminent les écosystèmes, et peuvent s’accumuler dans les plantes, les sédiments, et le long des chaînes alimentaires. Il apparait primordial d’effectuer une évaluation du risque écologique associé à la présence de ces composés dans les milieux naturels et les espèces sentinelles sont des outils judicieux pour déterminer l’exposition des individus et évaluer les conséquences sur les organismes. Les amphibiens et les reptiles possèdent des caractéristiques écologiques et biologiques qui les rendent potentiellement intéressants en tant qu’espèces sentinelles. L’objectif des études présentées dans cette thèse est de déterminer la disponibilité de certaines substances dans l’environnement, et d’évaluer les effets de la contamination environnementale sur les organismes en utilisant plusieurs espèces de reptiles et d’amphibiens, (i) en mesurant les niveaux de polluants accumulés dans les tissus d’espèces de reptiles ; (ii) en évaluant l’influence d’un habitat contaminé sur la morphologie d’adultes de crapaud commun (Bufo bufo) ; (iii) en mesurant de manière expérimentale l’impact d’une molécule fréquemment retrouvée dans l’environnement sur le développement de têtards de crapaud commun. Nos résultats montrent d’une part que les reptiles accumulent efficacement les polluants organiques et les éléments traces métalliques dans leurs tissus, et permettent d’évaluer efficacement la contamination globale d’une zone, mais aussi de mettre en évidence des pollutions ponctuelles localisées. D’autre part, nos travaux montrent une influence de l’habitat agricole sur la morphologie du crapaud commun, potentiellement causé par la présence de contaminants dans ces milieux. Enfin, nous avons pu mettre en évidence un effet de concentrations faibles d’AMPA, métabolite principal du glyphosate, sur le développement de têtards de crapaud commun. Les amphibiens constituent donc des organismes efficaces pour étudier l’impact de la contamination de l’environnement sur les caractéristiques individuelles. Nos travaux montrent ainsi l’utilité de certaines espèces de reptiles et d’amphibiens comme espèces sentinelles de la présence de contaminants dans l’environnement et de leur impact potentiel sur les organismes. Les travaux en écotoxicologie qui portent sur ces organismes restent trop rares, et il est impératif de développer la recherche dans ce domaine, pour participer de manière efficace à l’évaluation du risque environnemental. / The development of industrial and agricultural activities over the last century has resulted in the release of chemicals into the environment, which contaminate ecosystems and can accumulate in plants, sediments and across food webs. As such, it is essential to conduct an assessment of the ecological risk associated with the presence of these compounds in natural environments. Achieving this can be aided through the study of sentinel species, which can be used to determine exposure rates of individuals and assess how these subsequently impact wildlife. Amphibians and reptiles display ecological and biological characteristics that may make them particularly attractive as sentinel species. The collection of studies presented in this thesis aims to determine the availability of contaminants in the environment and estimate the effects of this on individual traits of living organisms. Across several species of reptiles and amphibians we, (i) measured levels of pollutants accumulated in the tissues of several reptile species ; (ii) assessed how contaminated habitats impact the morphology of adult common toads (Bufo bufo) ; and (iii) experimentally measured the influence of a molecule frequently detected in the environment on common toad tadpoles’ growth. Results show that reptiles efficiently accumulate organic pollutants and metal trace elements in their tissues, and thereby allow efficient evaluation of the global contamination of an area, as well as the occurrence of localized pollution events. In addition, our work shows an influence of the agricultural habitat on the morphology of adult common toads, which is potentially a consequence of the presence of chemicals in these environments. Finally, we were able to demonstrate an effect of low concentrations of AMPA, the main metabolite of glyphosate, on the development of common toad tadpoles. Amphibians are therefore efficient organisms to study the impact of environmental contamination on individual characteristics. Our work shows the usefulness of certain species of reptiles and amphibians as sentinel species for the presence of contaminants in the environment, and their potential impact on organisms. Ecotoxicological studies on these organisms remain too scarce, and it is imperative to develop research in this field, to participate effectively in the assessment of environmental risk.

Une nouvelle espèce de micro-algue photosynthétique, Coccomyxa actinabiotis, a récemment été découverte au sein d'une installation nucléaire. Cette algue présente une forte résistance aux radiations ionisantes et accumule certains radionucléides. Le développement d'une biotechnologie de décontamination des effluents liquides des réacteurs nucléaires basée sur C. actinabiotis est étudié du fait de ces propriétés. Ce travail vise plus particulièrement à caractériser et comprendre les processus d'accumulation par l'algue de l'argent et du cobalt, qui sont les radionucléides émetteurs gamma majoritaires dans les effluents liquides des réacteurs du parc électronucléaire français. Cette étude a été menée par quatre approches complémentaires : (a) Les cinétiques et les équilibres d'accumulation de ces métaux ont été déterminés par analyses ICP-MS (b) La distribution intracellulaire des métaux a été cartographiée à l'échelle nanométrique par fluorescence X de rayonnement synchrotron et par microscopie électronique en transmission (c) La spéciation de l'argent et du cobalt accumulés par la micro-algue a été déterminée par spectroscopie d'absorption X et par diffraction de rayons X (d) L'impact biologique de ces métaux sur l'algue a été examiné, notamment par l'étude des perturbations physiologiques, métaboliques et protéomiques associées à leur présence.L'ensemble de ces résultats dévoile une partie des processus à l'œuvre lors de l'accumulation d'argent ou de cobalt par C. actinabiotis. / A new green micro-alga species, Coccomyxa actinabiotis, was recently discovered in a nuclear environment. This alga is highly resistant to ionizing radiation and accumulates some radionuclides. Thanks to its properties, the development of a biotechnology based on C. actinabiotis for the clean-up of nuclear liquid effluents is under consideration. Our work aims more specifically at describing and understanding the alga's silver and cobalt accumulation processes; these metals being the main gamma emitting radionuclides present in liquid effluents issuing from French nuclear facilities.This study was carried out using four complementary approaches: (a) Kinetics and equilibriums of silver and cobalt uptake were assessed by ICP-MS analysis; (b) The subcellular distribution of the metals was mapped at a nanometric scale using synchrotron X-ray fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy; (c) The speciation of silver and cobalt taken up by the alga was assessed by synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction; (d) The biological impact of these metals on the alga was investigated, in particular the physiological, metabolic and proteomic perturbations they induce.Altogether, these results unveiled some of the processes involved in silver and cobalt accumulation by C. actinabiotis.

Le développement actuel de la technologie induit une constante nécessité d’obtenir des tailles de plus en plus petites pouvant descendre jusqu’à des dimensions micrométriques et sub -micrométriques. L’ablation laser, qui a le grand avantage d’un enlèvement de matière très précis, est un candidat prometteur. Dans cette thèse on démontre la faisabilité de tirer avantage des impulsions laser femtosecondes avec la matière pour la micro et nano structuration, et ceci en ayant développé une machine compacte de grande précision et flexibilité. Une approche théorique comparant les régimes d’interaction à haute et basse cadence est présentée. Des investigations de l’efficacité du temps de procédé aussi bien que l’effet de la cadence pendant l’ablation de métaux ont été effectuées. Le potentiel de l’outil multifonctionnel couplé avec un oscillateur laser femtoseconde à haute cadence est montré pour différentes applications en biotechnologie. Les résultats sur la cartographie d’une large zone aussi bien que la nano découpe de précision de tissus biologiques et de matériaux variés sont présentés. Cet outil polyvalent couvre de larges domaines de recherche de la nano découpe d’échantillons biologiques aussi bien que la nanostructuration de différents types de matériaux. C’est d’un grand intérêt pour de nombreuses applications en science des matériaux, nanobiotechnologie et nanomédecine / The current development of technology makes constant the necessity of getting smaller and smaller features sizes down to micrometer and sub micrometer scales. Laser ablation, which has the great advantage of precise material removal, is a promising candidate. In this dissertation we have demonstrated the feasibility to take advantage of the interaction of femtosecond laser pulses with matter for micro- and nano-structuration and this by having developed a compact and high accurate and flexible apparatus. An analyse of the specific physical mechanisms of laser-matter interaction in the femtosecond regime is presented. Investigations on processing time efficiency as well as the effect of the repetition rate during ablation of metals have been performed. The potential of the multifunctional tool coupled with a compact high repetition rate femtosecond oscillator is shown for different applications in biotechnology. Results on large area mapping as well as accurate nanoprocessing of biological tissue and various materials are presented. This versatile tool covers wide research fields from the nanoprocessing of biological samples as well as the nanostructuring of different type of materials. It is of great interest for many applications in material science, nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine
