On Primitivity and the Unital Full Free Product of Finite Dimensional C*-algebras

Torres Ayala, Francisco 2012 May 1900 (has links)
A C*-algebra is called primitive if it admits a *-representation that is both faithful and irreducible. Thus the simplest examples are matrix algebras. The main objective of this work is to classify unital full free products of finite dimensional C*-algebras that are primitive. We prove that given two nontrivial finite dimensional C*-algebras, A1 /= C, A2 /= C, the unital C*-algebra full free product A = A1 * A2 is primitive except when A1 = C^2 = A2. Roughly speaking, we first show that, except for trivial cases and the case A1 = C^2 = A2, there is an abundance of irreducible finite dimensional *-representations of A. The latter is accomplished by taking advantage of the structure of Lie group of the unitary operators in a finite dimensional Hilbert space. Later, by means of a sequence of approximations and Kaplansky?s density theorem we construct an irreducible and faithful {representation of A. We want to emphasize the fact that unital full free products of C*-algebras are highly abstract objects hence finding an irreducible *-{representation that is faithfully is an amazing fact. The dissertation is divided as follows. Chapter I gives an introduction, basic definitions and examples. Chapter II recalls some facts about *-automorphisms of finite dimensional C -algebras. Chapter III is fully devoted to prove Theorem III.6 which is about perturbing a pair of proper unital C*-subalgebras of a matrix algebra in such a way that they have trivial intersection. Theorem III.6 is the cornerstone for the rest of the results in this work. Lastly, Chapter IV contains the proof of the main theorem about primitivity and some consequences.

Actions of Finite Groups on Substitution Tilings and Their Associated C*-algebras

Starling, Charles B 01 February 2012 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to examine the actions of finite symmetry groups on aperiodic tilings. To an aperiodic tiling with finite local complexity arising from a primitive substitution rule one can associate a metric space, transformation groupoids, and C*-algebras. Finite symmetry groups of the tiling act on each of these objects and we investigate appropriate constructions on each, namely the orbit space, semidirect product groupoids, and crossed product C*-algebras respectively. Of particular interest are the crossed product C*-algebras; we derive important structure results about them and compute their K-theory.

Intersection Algebras and Pointed Rational Cones

Malec, Sara 13 August 2013 (has links)
In this dissertation we study the algebraic properties of the intersection algebra of two ideals I and J in a Noetherian ring R. A major part of the dissertation is devoted to the finite generation of these algebras and developing methods of obtaining their generators when the algebra is finitely generated. We prove that the intersection algebra is a finitely generated R-algebra when R is a Unique Factorization Domain and the two ideals are principal, and use fans of cones to find the algebra generators. This is done in Chapter 2, which concludes with introducing a new class of algebras called fan algebras. Chapter 3 deals with the intersection algebra of principal monomial ideals in a polynomial ring, where the theory of semigroup rings and toric ideals can be used. A detailed investigation of the intersection algebra of the polynomial ring in one variable is obtained. The intersection algebra in this case is connected to semigroup rings associated to systems of linear diophantine equations with integer coefficients, introduced by Stanley. In Chapter 4, we present a method for obtaining the generators of the intersection algebra for arbitrary monomial ideals in the polynomial ring.

Classification of Nilpotent Lie Algebras of Dimension 7 (over Algebraically Closed Field and R)

Gong, Ming-Peng January 1998 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the classification of 7-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras. Skjelbred and Sund have published in 1977 their method of constructing all nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension n given those algebras of dimension < n, and their automorphism groups. By using this method, we construct all nonisomorphic 7-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras in the following two cases: (1) over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic except 2; (2) over the real field R. We have compared our lists with three of the most recent lists (those of Seeley, Ancochea-Goze, and Romdhani). While our list in case (1) over C differs greatly from that of Ancochea-Goze, which contains too many errors to be usable, it agrees with that of Seeley apart from a few corrections that should be made in his list, Our list in case (2) over R contains all the algebras on Romdhani's list, which omits many algebras.

Algebraic characterization of multivariable dynamics

Ramsey, Christopher January 2009 (has links)
Let X be a locally compact Hausdorff space along with n proper continuous maps σ = (σ1 , · · · , σn ). Then the pair (X, σ) is called a dynamical system. To each system one can associate a universal operator algebra called the tensor algebra A(X, σ). The central question in this theory is whether these algebras characterize dynamical systems up to some form of natural conjugacy. In the n = 1 case, when there is only one self-map, we will show how this question has been completely determined. For n ≥ 2, isomorphism of two tensor algebras implies that the two dynamical systems are piecewise conjugate. The converse was only established for n = 2 and 3. We introduce a new construction of the unitary group U (n) that allows us to prove the algebraic characterization question in n = 2, 3 and 4 as well as translating this conjecture into a conjecture purely about the structure of the unitary group.

Maximal ideal space techniques in non-selfadjoint operator algebras

Ramsey, Christopher 24 April 2013 (has links)
The following thesis is divided into two main parts. In the first part we study the problem of characterizing algebras of functions living on analytic varieties. Specifically, we consider the restrictions M_V of the multiplier algebra M of Drury-Arveson space to a holomorphic subvariety V of the unit ball as well as the algebras A_V of continuous multipliers under the same restriction. We find that M_V is completely isometrically isomorphic to cM_W if and only if W is the image of V under a biholomorphic automorphism of the ball. In this case, the isomorphism is unitarily implemented. Furthermore, when V and W are homogeneous varieties then A_V is isometrically isomorphic to A_W if and only if the defining polynomial relations are the same up to a change of variables. The problem of characterizing when two such algebras are (algebraically) isomorphic is also studied. In the continuous homogeneous case, two algebras are isomorphic if and only if they are similar. However, in the multiplier algebra case the problem is much harder and several examples will be given where no such characterization is possible. In the second part we study the triangular subalgebras of UHF algebras which provide new examples of algebras with the Dirichlet property and the Ando property. This in turn allows us to describe the semicrossed product by an isometric automorphism. We also study the isometric automorphism group of these algebras and prove that it decomposes into the semidirect product of an abelian group by a torsion free group. Various other structure results are proven as well.

On the Modular Theory of von Neumann Algebras

Boey, Edward January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to provide an exposition of the \textit{modular theory} of von Neumann algebras. The motivation of the theory is to classify and describe von Neumann algebras which do not admit a trace, and in particular, type III factors. We replace traces with weights, and for a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ which admits a weight $\phi$, we show the existence of an automorphic action $\sigma^\phi:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\text{Aut}(\mathcal{M})$. After showing the existence of these actions we can discuss the crossed product construction, which will then allow us to study the structure of the algebra.
