La comunicación es una herramienta fundamental en el desarrollo humano, puesto que, permite simbolizar el pensamiento y los sentimientos; además es necesaria para la adaptación social y personal, y determina el proceso de aprendizaje de los infantes. El presente estudio, de enfoque cuantitativo y diseño observacional transversal, tuvo como objetivo determinar las diferencias y similitudes en el desarrollo comunicativo de infantes de un área rural y un área urbana. La investigación se llevó a cabo con una muestra de 50 padres de niños y niñas desde los 16 hasta los 30 meses de edad procedentes de un área urbana (Distrito de San Martín de Porres- Lima) y de un área rural (distrito de Ahuac en Chupaca-Junín). Los padres de familia respondieron el Inventario de Desarrollo Comunicativo MacArthur - Bates, en su versión adaptada al castellano peruano por Blume et. al (2021), el cual fue aplicado de manera presencial y virtual. Los hallazgos muestran que no hay diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre la zona rural y urbana, al comparar las partes del Inventario: Palabras, Gramática y Vocalizaciones, entre ambas áreas. Sin embargo, hubo diferencias leves en la parte Palabras, en las categorías de vocabulario, con ventaja para el área rural, siendo similar en la categoría Desarrollo Comunicativo para el área urbana. Con respecto a la parte Gramática, hubo un incremento esperado conforme a la edad en el área rural, a diferencia del área urbana. / Communication is a fundamental tool in human development, since it allows us to symbolize thoughts and feelings; it is also necessary for social and personal adaptation, and determines the learning process of infants. The present study, with a quantitative approach and cross-sectional observational design, aimed to determine the differences and similarities in the communicative development of infants in a rural area and an urban area. The research was carried out with a sample of 50 parents of boys and girls from 16 to 30 months of age from an urban area (District of San Martín de Porres-Lima) and from a rural area (District of Ahuac in Chupaca-Junin). Parents answered the MacArthur Communication Skills Inventory, in its adapted version to Peruvian Spanish by Blume et. al (2021), which was applied in person and virtually through the google meet application. The findings show that there are no statistically significant differences between the rural and urban areas, within which the parts of words, grammar and vocalizations were compared between both areas. However, there were slight differences in terms of vocabulary categories with advantage for the rural area, as well as in terms of language development for the urban area. Regarding grammar, there was an expected increase according to age in the rural area, unlike the urban area.
