No. of bitstreams: 1 SEVERINO BREDA DA SILVA.pdf: 1408447 bytes, checksum: 9955f2c6ad4f0fcc781596047492ee3a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-08-29 / This thesis analyzes the conflict of rights and duties motivated by the guard "Biblical Sabbath" or "Natural Sabbath" by followers of Adventist religion Seventh- Day. For Seventh-Day Adventists, the Sabbath observance is a proof of fidelity and loyalty faithful to their God. It is a matter of obedience to sacred time reserved by the eternal and immutable law of God. It is an indispensable dogma and a bond with God from the beginning to its end. According to the followers of Adventist religion the Seventh-Day Sabbath is the center of worship and service to God and establishes such an understanding in the books of Exodus 20, 8-11, Leviticus 23, 32 and Deuteronomy 16, 6 respectively. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the question of the characteristics of the guard of the "Sabbath" by followers of Adventist religion Seventh-Day, their biblical interpretation. The practice of Sabbath guard presented as a collision of fundamental rights and principles. The right to education and work in conflict with the right to religious freedom, both public, and private, especially regarding the provision of public procurement and in the educational environment and with respect to the practice of secular and labor activities on sabbatical from the sunset of Friday to the sunset of Saturday.

The contribution and influence of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in the development of post-secondary education in South Nyanza, 1971-2000

Maangi, Eric Nyankanga 14 November 2014 (has links)
This study discusses the contribution and influence of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church to the development of post- secondary education in South Nyanza, Kenya. This has been done by focusing on the establishment and development of Kamagambo and Nyanchwa Adventist colleges whose history from 1971 to 2000 has been documented. This is a historical study which has utilized both the primary and secondary source of data. For better and clear insights into this topic, the study starts by discussing the coming of Christian missionaries to Africa. The missionaries who came to Africa introduced western education. The origin of the SDA church to Africa has also been documented. The SDA church was formed as a result of the Christian evangelical revivals in Europe. This called for the Christians to base their faith on the Bible. As people read various prophecies in the bible, they thought that what they read was to be fulfilled in their lifetime. From 1830s to 1840s preachers and lay people from widely different denominations United States of America around William Miller (1782-1849). This led to the establishment of the SDA Church in 1844. The study focuses on the coming of the SDA Missionaries to South-Nyanza. The efforts of the SDA Missionaries to introduce Western education in the said area, an endeavor which started at Gendia in 1906 has been discussed. From Gendia they established Wire mission and Kenyadoto mission in 1909. In 1912 Kamagambo and Nyanchwa, the subject of this study became mission and educational centres. The SDA mission, as was the case with other missionaries who evangelized South Nyanza, took the education of Africans as one of the most important goals for the process of African evangelization. The Adventist message penetrated the people of South Nyanza through their educational work. The conversion of the first converts can be ascribed to the desire for the education which accompanied the new religion. Kamagambo Adventist College became the first college in South Nyanza. Equally, Nyanchwa became the first college in the Gusii part of South Nyanza. The two colleges exercised a great influence on the local community especially in the socio-economic and educational fields. At the same time the colleges have also contributed enormously to the community’s development through the roles played by its alumni in society. Besides this, the study has also recommended some other pertinent areas for further study and research. / Educational Foundations / D. Ed. (History of Education)

Volnočasové aktivity církví jako misijní metody / Church Free Time Activity as a Missionary Method

Máchová, Ema January 2011 (has links)
Church Free Time Activity as a Missionary Method Ema Máchová Diploma thesis are trying to find out a church free time activity overlap into missionary effort and it's form. The common grounds are based within the catholic church mission, history of education and modern approaches of free time pedagogy. Author search whether is possible to get over childern and young people for christian way of living throughout the free time activities. Salesians and The Seventh-day Adventists missionary effort range is appraised by interviews with particular church representatives and consecutive reflection. It's coming out from this groundwork, that this is not relevant within church free time activies in terms of mission persiding into baptism. Nevertheless such a church free time doing could have a missionary overleap through a leader of this free time activity. A missioner- pedagogue must be aware of his duty responsibility and not only during his role as a missioner-pedagogue, but in his whole life. Then we can speak about a mission arising from testimony of our own lifes.

The authority of Ellen G. White: a critical evaluation

Van Niekerk, Gustav 13 August 2019 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 136-148) / The name Ellen G. White as a founding member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and as an author, currently still being read, evokes a great deal of discussion. The various views that are to be found within the discussion cover a wide range of views, either promoting or criticising White’s authority. By comparing the works of Canright, Nichol, Bradford, and Knight, we gain a wide perspective on three critical views in this discussion. This dissertation will consider the issues regarding White’s authority, the historical development of her authority and consideration of her authority in comparison to Scriptural authority. The dissertation seeks to offer the development of White’s authority and the changes that contributed to the various views around her authority, and presents a critical evaluation regarding her authority for today. After the different authors were compared, and having provided my critical evaluation, I came to the conclusion that a moderate view of White as presented by Bradford and Knight presents the view that allows for the following: • Retaining the principle of Sola Scriptura. • Managing White’s authority. • Providing theological freedom. As such, White’s authority can be a positive influence in Seventh-day Adventist theology, promoting theological growth and not impeding it. The critical evaluation makes it evident that there is a lack of a paradigm to evaluate White, especially her authority. The need for a paradigm from which to evaluate White requires further study. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Systematic Theology)

Socialising accountability for the sacred: a study of the Sanitarium Health Food Company.

Hardy, Leslie Harold January 2008 (has links)
Accounting and accountability researchers have shown new interest in the study of religious organizations by exploring how secular practices associated with accounting and accountability mesh with religious goals and activities. Despite burgeoning research into accountability relatively little is known about the nature of accountability in religious organizations. The present study seeks to address this need by exploring the accountability practices of a business entity owned and operated by an Australian religious minority. This study focuses on the accountability practices of the Sanitarium Health Food Company (SHF), a food manufacturing business owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. SHF is a non-profit organization whose annual gross revenue is estimated at between A$300m to A$400m, making it one of Australia’s top earning charities. SHF provides no formal financial reporting to church members and only a handful of church elites know the financial details of this organization. As a charity SHF is not required to pay income tax; as a department of the Adventist Church it is subjected to minimal regulatory requirements and therefore justifies not disclosing its financial details to church members or the public. However, as a charity there is an expectation that the organization would detail how profits are used, the causes it supports and the extent of that support. This information has not been readily forthcoming from the organization. Church members view SHF as being an Adventist organization upholding and promoting denominational teachings, values and practices; to the public the organization presents itself as a charity promoting disinterested humanitarianism. This case study combines historical and field research methodology. It draws on archival and published material relating to the SHF and Adventist community and data from interviews with a range of stakeholders. The primary focus of the study is the period between 1970 and 2005, during which time SHF grew significantly and underwent major restructuring of its operations, management and orientation. The study reveals that while SHF presents minimal formal reporting, the organization has evolved a sophisticated socialising accountability, aimed at promoting the operation to church members as an Adventist institution and to the wider public as a mainstream charity. The study highlights that a feature of Adventist accountability relates to a unique interpretation of the notion of being accountable to God. Adventists believe in a literal investigative audit in heaven commencing in 1844. This teaching differentiates Adventists from other religious groups. The teaching provides the primary focus of Adventist accountability, motivates social action and regulates Adventist organizational behaviour. The study of SHF provides a vantage point from which to examine the role that religious beliefs play in promoting commercial activities. In the study of SHF, religious beliefs and secular business practices overlap, each reinforcing the other. The evidence presented in relation to SHF highlights a meshing of religious values and secular operations in ways that make it impossible to compartmentalise sacred and secular activities within the Adventist organization. / http://proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au/login?url= http://library.adelaide.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=1369252 / Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, Business School, 2008

The objective this research was to present elements that show the health message of the denomination interacting with the development of the Superbom factory. As will be seen, the Adventist Review shows Superbom as being fundamental for the development of the movement in Brazil, so far, there are no researchers who have studied the subject. Here is the justification of the present work, to propose a first narrative of the factory, based on the organ of institutional disclosure, Adventist Review. If on one hand the factory had to seek modernization to meet the business demands, on the other, the institution had to suit market nuances. Thus, the adaptation of the products was a reality, although in content, the institution remained engaged with the health message of the denomination. As will be seen, the factory from its founding to the present day remained committed to the Second Advent message and White's instructions on health reform / O presente trabalho apresenta uma narrativa histórica da fábrica Superbom.
