Alcohol abuse in the workplace.

This study examines the problems relating to alcohol abuse in the workplace. The factors investigated include workplace safety, absenteeism and tardiness, productivity, and job satisfaction. Questions were also included to ascertain the individual's alcohol consumption patterns, both current (past 30 days) and over the past year. Finally, questions pertaining to the organisations' rules and policies on alcohol consumption were asked. The survey was undertaken in three organisations, two of which were private, and the third was a government department. The research sample of 280 subjects was drawn using the cluster sampling method. The data obtained from the sample was quantitatively analysed, by making use of various descriptive and inferential statistics. Qualitative data analysis was also conducted. Results indicated that a mere 2.5% of the subjects were notified by their organisations about the problems of alcohol abuse in the workplace. It is essential that organisations provide adequate information to their employees, both on the organisations' rules and policies on alcohol consumption, and on the workplace consequences of excessive alcohol consumption. Furthermore, a recommendation which follows from the results is that the organisations should implement an alcohol and drug abuse programme, which would ideally consist of a written policy on alcohol consumption at work, and the establishment of an Employment Assistance Programme (EAP), in addition to testing for alcohol levels at work. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Durban-Westville, 2000.

Best practices in dealing with substance abuse in the workplace

The research study was to identify what strategies could be used by organizations in managing or containing substance abuse in the workplace. In solving the research problems, the following actions were taken: A literature study was conducted to identify the scope and impact of substance abuse in the workplace; A literature study was also conducted to identify the strategies to prevent and contain substance abuse in the workplace;The findings from the literature studies were integrated into a model of best practices for the management of substance abuse in the workplace; The model was used as a basis for the development of a survey questionnaire to determine which strategies and wellness activities the surveyed companies were using. The questionnaire survey was administered at 25 companies in Port Elizabeth. The empirical results revealed that substance abuse was common at all organizations and the size of the organization had no bearing on the extent of the substance abuse problem. The majority of the participants in the study indicated that they experienced substance abuse problems in their organizations with alcohol consumption being the main problem at these organizations. The results also revealed that companies were not doing enough in terms of education and awareness campaigns. The lack of campaigns and education material could pose a difficult challenge to deal with and could result in companies experiencing adverse performance. Another contributing factor in the prevalence of substance abuse in the workplace was that alcohol and tobacco were referred to as socially acceptable substances.

An assessment of the employee assistance programme related to substance abuse : a case study of a selected private hospital in KwaZulu-Natal

Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Human Resources, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2017. / The aim of this study was to assess the employee assistance programme related to substance abuse within a selected private hospital in KwaZulu Natal. A paucity of information within the South African context on how employees with substance abuse problems were being managed within the workplace provided the motivation for this study. The objective of this study was to evaluate existing employee assistance programmes, the line manager model and existing human resource policies and procedures within the selected private hospital. The research design adopted a mixed method approach using a questionnaire, followed by an interview based on findings of the questionnaires. The intended sample size was 185 out of 460 staff and the final return of questionnaires was 219. Of significance is the response rate of over a 40% which implies a margin error of 5%. The data was analysed using the computerised Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS version 22.0 for Windows). This study concluded with the findings that emerged from the research. The findings suggest that employees with substance abuse problems are not being effectively managed and that there are no awareness models apart from the employee wellness provider. The limit of the employee wellness provider is that it markets “employee wellness” rather than an emphasis on substance abuse. A suggestion is that the human resource department and the wellness provider partner in inspiring a substance abuse prevention and assistance campaign. Another recommendation highlights the training of all line managers in identification of recognising employees with substance abuse problems prior to work performance being affected. The study concluded with suggestions for future research in this field. / M
