Computing a Diameter-constrained Minimum Spanning Tree

In numerous practical applications, it is necessary to find the smallest possible tree with a bounded diameter. A diameter-constrained minimum spanning tree (DCMST) of a given undirected, edge-weighted graph, G, is the smallest-weight spanning tree of all spanning trees of G which contain no path with more than k edges, where k is a given positive integer. The problem of finding a DCMST is NP-complete for all values of k; 4 ≤ k ≤ (n - 2), except when all edge-weights are identical. A DCMST is essential for the efficiency of various distributed mutual exclusion algorithms, where it can minimize the number of messages communicated among processors per critical section. It is also useful in linear lightwave networks, where it can minimize interference in the network by limiting the traffic in the network lines. Another practical application requiring a DCMST arises in data compression, where some algorithms compress a file utilizing a data-structure, and decompress a path in the tree to access a record. A DCMST helps such algorithms to be fast without sacrificing a lot of storage space. We present a survey of the literature on the DCMST problem, study the expected diameter of a random labeled tree, and present five new polynomial-time algorithms for an approximate DCMST. One of our new algorithms constructs approximate DCMST in a modified greedy fashion, employing a heuristic for selecting an edge to be added to the tree in each stage of the construction. Three other new algorithms start with an unconstrained minimum spanning tree, and iteratively refine it into an approximate DCMST. We also present ab algorithm designed for the special case when the diameter is required to be no more than 4. Such a diameter-4 tree is also used for evaluating the quality of other algorithms. All five algorithms were implemented on a PC, and four of them were also parallelized and implemented on a massively parallel machine-the MasPar MP-1. We discuss convergence, relative merits, and implementation of these heuristics. Our extensive empirical study shows that the heuristics produce good solutions for a wide variety of inputs.

Graph colourings and games

Graph colourings and combinatorial games are two very widely studied topics in discrete mathematics. This thesis addresses the computational complexity of a range of problems falling within one or both of these subjects. Much of the thesis is concerned with the computational complexity of problems related to the combinatorial game (Free-)Flood-It, in which players aim to make a coloured graph monochromatic ("flood" the graph) with the minimum possible number of flooding operations; such problems are known to be computationally hard in many cases. We begin by proving some general structural results about the behaviour of the game, including a powerful characterisation of the number of moves required to flood a graph in terms of the number of moves required to flood its spanning trees; these structural results are then applied to prove tractability results about a number of flood-filling problems. We also consider the computational complexity of flood-filling problems when the game is played on a rectangular grid of fixed height (focussing in particular on 3xn and 2xn grids), answering an open question of Clifford, Jalsenius, Montanaro and Sach. The final chapter concerns the parameterised complexity of list problems on graphs of bounded treewidth. We prove structural results determining the list edge chromatic number and list total chromatic number of graphs with bounded treewidth and large maximum degree, which are special cases of the List (Edge) Colouring Conjecture and Total Colouring Conjecture respectively. Using these results, we show that the problem of determining either of these quantities is fixed parameter tractable, parameterised by the treewidth of the input graph. Finally, we analyse a list version of the Hamilton Path problem, and prove it to be W[1]-hard when parameterised by the pathwidth of the input graph. These results answer two open questions of Fellows, Fomin, Lokshtanov, Rosamond, Saurabh, Szeider and Thomassen.

Sequential And Parallel Heuristic Algorithms For The Rectilinear Steiner Tree Problem

The Steiner Tree problem is one of the most popular graph problems and has many application areas. The rectilinear version of this problem, introduced by Hanan, has taken special attention since it addresses a fundamental matter in &ldquo / Physical Design&rdquo / phase of the Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) Computer Aided Design (CAD) process. The Rectilinear Steiner Tree Problem asks for a minimum length tree that interconnects a given set of points by only horizontal and vertical line segments, enabling the use of extra points. There are various exact algorithms. However the problem is NP-complete hence approximation algorithms have to be used especially for large instances. In this thesis work, first a survey on heuristics for the Rectilinear Steiner Tree Problem is conducted and then two recently developed successful algorithms, BGA by Kahng et. al. and RST by Zhou have been studied and investigated deeply. Both algorithms have subproblems, most of which have individual backgrounds in literature. After an analysis of BGA and RST, the thesis proposes a modification on RST, which leads to a faster and non-recursive version. The efficiency of the modified algorithm has been validated by computational tests using both random and VLSI benchmark instances. A partially parallelized version of the modified algorithm is also proposed for distributed computing environments. It is implemented using MPI (message passing interface) middleware and the results of comparative tests conducted on a cluster of workstations are presented. The proposed distributed algorithm has also proved to be promising especially for large problem instances.

This master’s thesis deals with the distributed computing and mathematical tools for modelling the distributed systems. Firstly, my attention is focused on a description of the distributed algorithms, characteristic failures for the distributed systems, and mathematical tools for an analysis of the distributed systems.The experimental part is concerned with the impact of stochastic link failures on the chosen parameters of the protocol Push-sum, namely the deviation of the final states from the average value, the convergence rate of the protocol, the distribution of the final states, and the distribution of the convergence rates. My intention is demonstrated using Matlab on a tree, a ring, a line, a star, and a fully-connected mesh topology. Was analyzed two functionalities of the protocol Push-sum, namely an estimation of the average value and an estimation of sum.
