Identification Of Fabrics Likely To Collect And Disperse Fel D 1Jones, Mary Janice 01 January 2011 (has links)
Individuals sensitive to domestic cat allergen Fel d 1 experience a variety of symptoms including eye irritation, respiratory irritation, asthma, and severe respiratory distress. Fel d 1 is a protein produced in the saliva and on the skin of domestic cats. Previous studies have demonstrated that Fel d 1 adheres to clothing, upholstery, and human hair and has been found in non-cat environments in levels high enough to cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. In a general sense, two very different approaches have been adopted to study Fel d 1. One area of the literature focuses on the molecular biology of Fel d 1 and its functions at the cellular level. These studies hold long-term promise for an effective clinical response to this persistent allergen. An entirely separate literature focuses on immediate practical solutions that remove Fel d 1 from the domestic environment. Within this literature there has been minimal emphasis on the possibility that different fabrics may have different affinities for Fel d 1. Therefore, the affinity of Fel d 1 for different fabrics is the focus of this study. The findings from this study will be of use in reducing allergic reactions in sensitive individuals through the choice of appropriate fabrics in clothing and upholstery. Forty domestic household cats were chosen for this study. Each cat was rubbed, in a manner similar to petting, with an assembled fabric square based on a Latin-square design. Each Latin-square design consisted of a 6x6 fabric grid and included the fabrics silk dupioni, wool suiting, cotton denim, cotton damask, polyester suede and polyester knit. The random organization of the fabrics into the grid removed bias for the location of fabrics within the square during Fel d 1 collection. After rubbing, the Latin-square fabric iii block was disassembled and Fel d 1 was extracted from each fabric type and analyzed via quantitative ELISA. The results were statistically analyzed with a univariate ANOVA. Fabrics significantly differ (p

Phenyl Functionalized Sol-gel Silica Sorbent for Capillary Microextraction and Chromia-Based Sol-gel Ucon Stationary Phase for Capillary Gas ChromatographyMcLean, Michael M. 04 November 2014 (has links)
The first chapter of this thesis presents an introduction to sol-gel methodology whose usefulness as a synthetic route will be demonstrated with two applications in chromatography. The first application involves the fabrication of a capillary micro-extraction (CME) device by coating a phenyl functionalized extracting phase on the inner surface of a fused silica capillary for analyte pre-concentration. The device was coupled on-line to a RP-HPLC system and practicality was demonstrated using allergens as target analytes. The allergens chosen as model analytes are typically found in fragrance products and food. Most of the 26 fragrance allergens that are monitored by various government authorities have a phenyl organic moiety (a strong chromophore), thus making them appropriate probes for exploring the extraction efficiency of the coating using a UV detector. The CME device showed ppt level limit of detection which makes it suitable for trace analyses of allergens and similar compounds in a variety of matrices.
The second application explores the feasibility of using sol-gel derived chromia-based stationary phase in gas chromatographic columns. The organic moiety of the stationary phase was derived from Ucon 75-H-90,000 while the inorganic backbone was prepared using chromium(III) dichloride hydroxide - methacrylic acid - aqua complex, 40% in isopropanol/acetone . Usefulness of prepared chromia-based GC stationary phase was examined for petrochemical application. Promising results were obtained using aliphatic-aromatics, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, BTEX test mixture, cycloalkanes, branched alkanes and akylbenzenes. The column was able to perform without degradation despite being rinsed multiples times sequentially with the following solvents: dichloromethane, methanol, water and finally methanol again. Maximum theoretical plate number calculated is around 2,400 plates/m. The plate number clearly needs improvement but is a promising result for the newly explored chromia-based stationary phase. The maximum programmable temperature is 250oC which is comparable with similar commercially available polar stationary phases.

Oro alergenų kiekio lyginamoji analizė šiaurės Lietuvoje / Comparative Analysis of the Quantity of Airborne Allergens in Northern LithuaniaBartaševičiūtė, Kristina 16 July 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / At the beginning of spring, when plants are in blossom, being of pollen in the air is unavoidable, the allergy induced by plants` pollen is becoming a bigger problem in the world, as more and more people are detcting allergy symptoms. This paper presents the research of the abundance of allergenic plants` pollen and the dynamics in the course of the year, which is beneficial to health institutions in Rokiskis and the patients who complain about the allergy. The results of the investigation carried out in Rokiškis are compared with the concentrations of pollen in the air of the city of Šiauliai. For this part of the population of Lithuania, it is important to know what the concentration of the pollen in the air is expected , and what periods of the year are detrimental to the activity outside.
The goal of the paper is to carry out the studies on the spread of air pollen in Rokiškis and its comparative analysis with the fixed pollen in Šiauliai. The aims of the paper: to identify the pollen fixed in the samples in the air of Rokiškis town and to analyze their spread; to accomplish the comparative analysis of air pollen in Rokiškis and Šiauliai towns.
According to the assessment of the dynamics of the air-borne pollen in Rokiškis,it has been found that in 2013 the pollen load period covered 235 days. From the woody plant group, having the largest concentration of pollen per day stood out the alder (1664 pollen/m3) and piny genus plants (900 pollen/m3), from the summer-dusting... [to full text]
