Color Range Determination and Alpha Matting for Color Images

This thesis proposes a new chroma keying method that can automatically detect background, foreground, and unknown regions. For background color detection, we use K-means clustering in color space to calculate the limited number of clusters of background colors. We use spatial information to clean the background regions and minimize the unknown regions. Our method only needs minimum inputs from user. For unknown regions, we implement the alpha matte based on Wang's robust matting algorithm, which is considered one of the best algorithms in the literature, if not the best. Wang's algorithm is based on modified random walk. We proposed a better color selection method, which improves matting results in the experiments. In the thesis, a detailed implementation of robust matting is provided. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method can handle images with one background color, images with gridded background, and images with difficult regions such as complex hair stripes and semi-transparent clothes.

Automatic Stereoscopic 3D Chroma-Key Matting Using Perceptual Analysis and Prediction

This research presents a novel framework for automatic chroma keying and the optimizations for real-time and stereoscopic 3D processing. It first simulates the process of human perception on isolating foreground elements in a given scene by perceptual analysis, and then predicts foreground colours and alpha map based on the analysis results and the restored clean background plate rather than direct sampling. Besides, an object level depth map is generated through stereo matching on a carefully determined feature map. In addition, three prototypes on different platforms have been implemented according to their hardware capability based on the proposed framework. To achieve real-time performance, the entire procedures are optimized for parallel processing and data paths on the GPU, as well as heterogeneous computing between GPU and CPU. The qualitative comparisons between results generated by the proposed algorithm and other existing algorithms show that the proposed one is able to generate more acceptable alpha maps and foreground colours especially in those regions that contain translucencies and details. And the quantitative evaluations also validate our advantages in both quality and speed.

Interaktivní segmentace popředí/pozadí na mobilním telefonu / Interactive Foreground/Background Segmentation on Mobile Phone

This thesis deals with the problem of foreground extraction on mobile devices. The main goal of this project is to find or design segmentation methods for separating a user-selected object from an image (or video). The main requirement of these methods is the image processing time and segmentation quality. Some existing solutions of this problem are mentioned and their usability on mobile devices is discussed. A mobile application is created within the project, demonstrating the implemented real time foreground extraction algorithm.
