A população desta área é de aproximadamente 25 milhões de habitantes. Seus recursos naturais como biodiversidade, riqueza mineral e água doce, assim como seu destacado papel na regulação do clima global, tem atraído a atenção de todo o mundo. No passado, a defesa militar desse vasto território era função das forças militares portuguesas e, depois, pelas forças militares imperiais que as sucederam. Atualmente, esta função está a cargo dos três segmentos das Forças Armadas brasileiras, Exército, Marinha e Aeronáutica, as quais exercem importante função no desenvolvimento da região. Este estudo procura compreender o significado das idéias e opiniões mais relevantes sobre a região amazônica idealizadas por pensadores das Forças Armadas Brasileiras ao longo do Século XX e início do Século XXI. Analisou-se a efetiva presença militar na região amazônica, a qual foi mapeada ao longo do período. Constatou-se que o trabalho desenvolvido pelas Forças Armadas brasileiras na região amazônica foi extremamente importante para o desenvolvimento e colonização desta área. Percebeu-se também que os argumentos em defesa do ambiente só foram incorporados ao discurso militar durante os últimos anos da década de 80 e ao longo dos anos 90. Esta pesquisa também analisou como o meio ambiente era percebido e vivenciado pelos pensadores militares do século XX, destacando-se o período em que a visão da região amazônica evoluiu da tradicional percepção de “Inferno Verde” para a moderna concepção de “El Dorado”. Ao abarcar um período de mais de um século, este estudo analisou tanto a criação como a difusão de idéias e observações relacionadas à região amazônica, tanto quanto a instalação e efetiva ocupação da floresta pelas Forças Armadas, inclusive as modificações que se processaram ao longo do tempo. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The Amazon region comprises nine of the 27 administrative units of Brazil, with an area equivalent to 60% of the country's territory. The population of this area is about 25 million people. Its natural resources, like biodiversity, mineral wealth and fresh water, as well as its outstanding role in the process of regulation of global climate, have been drawn attention of the world. In the past, military defense of this vast territory was carried out respectively by the Portuguese forces and later by the succeeding Imperial forces. Nowadays, this task is accomplished by the three branches of the Brazilian military force, Army, Navy and Air Force, which play important part in the development of the region. Thisstudyseeks to comprehend the meaning of the most relevant ideas and opinions about the Amazon region devised by thinkers ofthe Brazilian Armed Forces throughout the twentieth century and earlyt wenty first century. The actual military presence in the Amazon region was analyzed and the process of its installation was mapped over this period. It was realized that the work developed by the Brazilian Armed Forces in the Amazon region was extremely important for the development and colonization of this area. It was also acknowledged that arguments in favor of the environment were only incorporated into the military discourse during the final years of the 80’s and all along the 90’s. This research also analyzed how the environment was perceived and experienced by the military thinkers of the twentieth century, putting into relief the period when the vision of the Amazon region was replaced from the traditional perception of “green hell” to the modern conception of “el dorado”. Comprising a period of more than a century, this study analyzed both the creation and diffusion of ideas and observations relating to the Amazon region, as well as the installation and effective occupation of the forest by the Armed Forces, including the modifications accomplished along the time.
