Catalytic Role of Boron Nitride in the Thermal Decomposition of Ammonium Perchlorate

Grossman, Kevin 01 January 2015 (has links)
The decomposition of Ammonium Perchlorate (AP), a strong oxidizer used in solid rocket propellant, is widely studied in an attempt to increase the burn characteristics of propellants. Many materials have been shown to catalyze its decomposition, but little is known about the mechanism by which AP decomposition becomes catalyzed. In this study, Boron Nitride (BN) nanostructures, a material previously unknown to act as a catalyst, is studied. The decomposition reaction is studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis / differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The goal of this study is to discover the activation energy of this catalyst reaction, intermediary products of the reaction, mechanism of reaction and end state of the boron nitride nanostructures (ie, if the BN acts as a true catalyst, or participates on the overall reaction and has some end state that*s different from the initial state). Four variations of BN have been synthesized using a hydrothermal process; BN nanoribbons, Boron Rich BN, Nitrogen-Rich BN, and high surface area BN. It is shown that the decomposition of AP is significantly altered when in the presence of BN and the mechanism through which BN catalyzes the decomposition is most likely the presence of oxidized nitrogen species on the BN material.

From N to P: Examining Structure-Property Relationships of Ammonium- and Phosphonium-Containing Macromolecules

Hemp, Sean Taylor 04 September 2013 (has links)
An unprecedented comprehensive study of ammonium and phosphonium polyelectrolytes probed and examined structure-property relationships with a focus on different macromolecular properties. Conventional free radical polymerization readily generated a large library of ammonium- and phosphonium-containing polyelectrolytes. Along with the two different cationic atoms, the alkyl substituent lengths and counterions were varied to generate a thorough structure-property relationship analysis. Phosphonium macromolecules displayed improved thermal stabilities and improved ionic conductivities compared to ammonium analogs. Longer alkyl substituent lengths systematically decreased the glass transition temperatures of all polyelectrolytes; the larger, bulkier counterions also resulted in lower glass transition temperatures. Counterion also impacted the thermal stability of the polymerized ionic liquids with less basic counterions leading to improved thermal stability. For the first time, the efficacy of phosphonium macromolecules for nonviral nucleic acid delivery was examined. Phosphonium macromolecules more efficiently complexed nucleic acids than ammonium analogs and butyl-containing phosphonium macromolecules delivered nucleic acids more effectively than the ammonium analog. Controlled radical polymerization generated unprecedented phosphonium-containing diblock copolymers and these diblock copolymers displayed enhanced colloidal stability and lower cytotoxicity compared to the phosphonium homopolymer for nucleic acid delivery. Step-growth polymerization techniques enabled the synthesis of well-defined, high molecular weight phosphonium ionenes for the first time. Phosphonium ionenes exhibited higher thermal stability and alkaline stability compared to ammonium ionenes. Due to their high thermal stability and relatively low glass transition temperatures, unprecedented melt rheology studies on polyelectrolytes probed the melt flow characteristics of phosphonium ionenes. Novel phosphonium gemini surfactants displayed interesting solution properties in aqueous and chloroform solutions. Electrospinning of the phosphonium gemini surfactants created uniform fibers. The synthesis and characterization of sulfonium polyelectrolytes enabled the first examination of sulfonium macromolecules for nonviral nucleic acid delivery. Sulfonium polyelectrolytes successfully bound nucleic acids and delivered them in vitro. Controlled radical polymerization generated innovative AB diblock and ABA triblock copolymers that displayed salt- and temperature-responsive properties suitable for biological applications such as drug delivery vehicles and hydrogels. Finally, adenine-containing polyelectrolytes were synthesized and they were successfully electrospun to generate adenine-decorated nanofibers appropriate for filtration and nonwoven applications. / Ph. Rhesus factors: structure-function analysis and physiological role in mouse

Deschuyteneer, Aude 14 January 2014 (has links)
Proteins of the conserved Mep-Amt-Rh superfamily, including mammalian Rhesus factors,<p>mediate ammonium transport. Ammonium is an important nitrogen source for the<p>biosynthesis of amino acids for instance but its accumulation is also known as cytotoxic in<p>animals. Nevertheless, the controlled disposal of ammonium in urine plays a critical role in<p>the regulation of the acid-base homeostasis. Alteration in ammonium transport via human Rh<p>proteins could have clinical outcomes. In this work, we addressed aspects of structurefunction<p>analysis of altered human Rhesus proteins using a heterologous expression system<p>and further characterized aspects of the patho-physiological roles of Rh proteins using<p>knockout mice models available in the laboratory.<p>Using a yeast-based expression assay, we characterized human Rh variants resulting from non<p>synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) with known or unknown clinical<p>phenotypes. The HsRhAG variants (I61R, F65S) associated to overhydrated hereditary<p>stomatocytosis (OHSt), a disease affecting erythrocytes, proved affected in intrinsic<p>bidirectional ammonium transport, suggesting altered ammonium transport as a potential<p>hallmark of the disease. Moreover, these variants showed trans-dominant negative effects on<p>the activity of their native HsRhAG counterpart, suggesting altered cooperation of the<p>subunits in “heteromeric” transport complexes. On the other hand, we revealed that the<p>R202C variant of HsRhCG, the orthologue of mouse Rhcg required for optimal urinary<p>ammonium excretion and blood pH control, shows an impaired inherent ammonium transport<p>activity. HsRhCGR202C may potentially confer susceptibility to disorders leading to metabolic<p>acidosis for instance. <p>MmRhcg has been shown to be expressed in the male mice epididymal tract, its absence<p>leading to a more acidic luminal fluid and to a reduced male fertility. Using mice<p>models, we further investigated the role of Rhcg and Rhbg proteins in the male<p>reproductive function. <p> / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Novel phosphonium and ammonium ionic liquids for green applications

Grimes, Scott Alan 11 September 2014 (has links)
New phosphonium and ammonium ionic liquids were prepared for use in two green applications. Ionic liquids are generating considerable current interest as media for electrochemical processes such as electrodeposition, which can be used to create thin films of a variety of compounds. For the first time, silicon deposition has been achieved in the phosphonium ionic liquid triethyl(2-methoxyethyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (P201-TFSI). Subsequently, silicon has been deposited from a wide variety of precursors in order to optimize the thickness and morphology of the deposited films. The silicon films electrodeposited in the phosphonium ionic liquid show marked differences from those deposited in organic solvents, imidizolium and pyrrolidinium based ionic liquids. Phosphonium and ammonium ionic liquids were also investigated for use in carbon dioxide capture. Task-specific ionic liquids have shown great promise as agents for the physisorption and chemisorption of CO2 from combustion gas streams. Efforts to synthesize new task specific ionic liquids with multiple amine functionalities for CO2 capture are reported. Four different reaction pathways were explored for the synthesis of these materials. While this goal was not achieved in this work, task-specific phosphonium and ammonium ionic liquids offer the promise of opening up new areas in ionic liquid research. / text
