_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research is established through the involvement of language with other elements of the social practices. The main goal of The power in discourse: clash of identities in journalistic interviews is to analyze the relationship between power and discourse, from the point of view of identitary constructions. In order to achieve such goal, this research focuses on certain discursive strategies which enable subjects to exercise power, as well as describes and analyses the “places” and “movements” occupied and made by the subjects in their discourse so as to invest themselves in authority. Thus, one reaches the characterization of the identities of power established here. Supported by the qualitative methodology, for it aims at interpreting the data which constitute the corpus – the genre of journalistic interviews with politicians – this research has as its main theoretical foundation the Critical Analysis of the Discourse, especially in the contribution by Faircloguh (2001 and 2003) and Chouliaraki and Fairclough (1999). The other theoretical contributors are as follows: Thompson (1998), in the consideration of the symbolic means of operating ideology; Halliday (1994), in the proposition of the use of Systemic-Functional Linguistics for the analysis of processes, participants and circumstances; Fairclough (2001 and 2003) and Chouliaraki and Fairclough (1999), in the considerations and changes proposed by them to the Systemic-Functional Linguistics as contributed by Halliday (1994); Kress and van Leeuwen (1996), in the consideration of multimodality and the visual grammar; Giddens (2002), Bauman (1999, 2001 and 2005), Woodward (2000), Hall (2000), Silva (2000), Castells (2002) and Canclini (2005), in gathering the complex notion of identities. The conclusions show that, in a discursive approach, language assumes the condition of a constitutive element of the social practices, alongside others, in a dialectic relationship, acting to the service of not only designation, but also ideology and identitary construction.
