Schooling the imagination : an experiment in arts-based education

Menon, Nimi January 2002 (has links)
This classroom-based interpretive inquiry investigates how the teaching strategies used in a grade-three classroom in a small, private, arts-based primary school implement the arts mission of the school. Further, it explores the relationship between art subjects [music, visual arts, theater, and dance] taught in art ateliers and academic subjects taught in the classroom. The art teachers' practices and the classroom teacher's practices are conceptualized within a Vygotskian socio-cultural framework. Further theoretical background is provided by the literature from art-based curriculum studies, developmental psychology, philosophy of education, and theories of qualitative research. This inquiry challenges the traditional view of arts reflected in most North American classroom practices. The chief research participants were the classroom teacher, the arts teachers, the school's founder, and the school's Principal. The children in the school also participated in focus groups. Data collected and analyzed include 40 hours of classroom-based observations in one class over a three-month period, 12 hours of interviews with the research participants over 16 months, and documents such as course handouts and small brochures describing the school's mission. Findings indicate that the arts instructors and classroom teacher collaborate closely to develop the yearly "theme unificateur" or unifying theme. Attitudes and strategies revealed in the study fit the constructivist model of classroom instruction. Despite growing pains experienced by the school's current expansion, findings suggest that the arts instructors and the classroom instructor are not only filling the academic mission of the school, but are also (a) creating strong relationships with their students, (b) promoting self-esteem and emotional intelligence, and (c) creating artistic and cultural literacy.

Industrial arts curriculum project for the Thomas Butcher Children's School of Kansas Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas

Ashbaugh, Norman Ray January 1972 (has links)
This study was concerned with developing an innovative program for the Thomas Butcher Children's School of Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas.A survey was made of the known innovative programs, with an in-depth comparison of similarities and dissimilarities of the three most notorious programs: The Industrial Arts Curriculum Project, The American Industries Project, and The Maryland Plan, and of the three most recent books directed toward elementary industrial arts: Teaching Elementary Industrial Art, Teaching Children About Technology, and Elementary School Industrial Arts, relative to rationale, objectives, and structure. The suggested program began with a definition of Industrial Arts for elementary education, followed by the rationale, objectives and structure. Communications was to receive the major emphasis at the Kindergarten level; transportation at the first grade level; shelter at the second grade level; clothing at the third and fourth grade level; and foods at the fifth and sixth grade level, although each could not be limited to any one grade level. Units under each category were followed by room preparation, minimal tool list, and material media suggestions.

Meyer, Lelanie 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study focuses on the perception of Creative Arts educators in the Intermediate Phase with regard to their own competency levels to teach Creative Arts effectively. Creative Arts consists of four art forms, namely Dance, Music, Drama and Visual Arts. The ideal is that all Creative Art educators are competent enough to teach the different art forms effectively. To answer the research question in order to achieve the goal of the study, the researcher made use of a qualitative research design from within an interpretive research paradigm. A case study strategy has also been applied by the researcher in order to obtain data pertaining to the specific aspect of the study, namely Creative Arts educators. Various sources were used to generate the data, namely semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and document analysis. Various precautionary measures were taken to ensure the validity and reliability of the data. During the course of the investigation, ethical issues were in question. However, the researcher followed the necessary guidelines to ensure that all endeavours were ethically acceptable. In the literature study the curriculum review process as well as the inclusion of Arts and Culture and Creative Arts in the curriculum is analysed. The training of Creative Arts educators and the challenges that this subject poses to schools and other mainstream educators are also considered. It was established that mainstream educators are often unable to teach this subject with the required confidence, knowledge and skills. Taking the results of this study into account, it appears that Creative Arts educators are not trained sufficiently in the four art forms, which influences the way in which the subject is taught. Educators who have received training in only one of the art forms tend to emphasise that particular art form only. The results of the study clearly indicate that the educators will only be able to do justice to Creative Arts as a subject if they are trained sufficiently to teach it with the necessary confidence and skill.

Creativity in an arts integrated third space: a case study of elementary school students in an international collaboration

Unknown Date (has links)
This qualitative case study examined the impact of an arts integrated international collaboration on elementary school students’ creativity when the students were communicating and creating exclusively through a technological third space. Two organizations, one in the U.S. and one in Mexico, served as the sites for the case study. Five findings emerged from the study relating to the nature of creativity and two findings related to the impact on students’ creativity when engaged in arts-integrated international collaboration. The findings for the first question were: 1. Students and teaching artists view creativity as a process that is reflexive and engaging, 2. When reflecting on their work, students and teaching artists see creativity as an interplay of ideas and are open to and capable of modifying their ideas to achieve creative results, 3. Creative work is relative to the individual and is directly correlated to both originality and effort, 4. Students and teaching artists value creativity as a means for both self-expression and communication, 5. A collaborative environment sets the stage for creative behavior in terms of inviting feedback, providing constructive criticism, and sharing ideas. For the second question relating to impact, the two findings were: 1. Teaching and learning in the third space becomes a recursive process, and 2. Students work in new modes of communication in order to bridge cultures. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
