Chachi Salcedo, Adriana Mariel 28 October 2024 (has links)
Synesthesia is a phenomenon that involves the pairing of an inducing stimulus with a perception in a different sensory modality. Although it has been considered a condition with a genetic basis, another perspective suggests that any person could experience synesthesia under certain conditions. This study explored this possibility, aiming to induce visual synesthetic experiences in individuals without the natural condition of synesthesia using auditory stimuli. Additionally, the relationship between these experiences and attention was examined, measured through the Attention Network Test, which evaluates the alerting, orienting, and executive control networks. Forty-two participants (18 men and 24 women), aged between 20 and 24 years (M = 22.4, SD = 2.07), took part in the study. No significant differences were found between the control and experimental groups in the perception of visual concurrents. However, a moderate and significant relationship was observed between the frequency of visual concurrents and the executive control network, suggesting a link between multisensory perceptions and higher cognitive processing through attention regulation.
