The relationship between internal and external locus of control and self-reported frequency of athletic injury

Krueger, Cara Beth 12 April 2006 (has links)
The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between two types of locus of control among a sample of Texas A&M varsity athletes and their frequency of selfreported injury in athletic competition and practice in a 12 month period. Using a webbased survey, 640 varsity athletes were asked to respond to a questionnaire which evaluated Locus of Control type using an adapted version of the Health Locus of Control Scale. Respondents were also asked to self-report their frequency of injury within the past 12 months. Locus of Control was not found to be a significant predictor of athletic injury.

Psychology of Sport Injury : Prediction, Prevention and Rehabilitation in Swedish Team Sport Athletes

Ivarsson, Andreas January 2015 (has links)
The dissertation consists of five separate studies that all have focused on different aspects of the relationship between psychological factors and sport injuries. In the first study the aim was to investigate female elite soccer players’ experiences of the time prior to the occurrence of an ACL injury. In the result three themes of player experiences was identified: fatigue, life stress, and worry. The players interpreted these three themes as risk factors for ACL-injury.   The second study aimed to investigate whether personality, stress, and coping predicted injury occurrence in an elite soccer population. The result showed that an interaction between psychological variables (i.e. trait anxiety, negative life event stress and daily hassles, ineffective coping) could explain 24 % of the variance in injury occurrence. Moreover, the result showed that negative life event stress was found to have an indirect effect on injury occurrence through daily hassles. In the third study the aim was to investigate whether individual level and changes in hassle and uplift levels over a 10-week period could predict injury outcome in an elite junior soccer population. The results showed that both initial level as well as change in hassle influenced injury risk. More specific, both high initial level as well as slow decrease in hassle was associated with an increased risk of injury. The fourth study aimed to investigate the extent to which a mindfulness and acceptance based intervention program could reduce the number of sports injuries in a sample of soccer players. The result showed no statistically significant differences in injury rates between the two groups, but there was a medium effect size (adjusted Cohen´s d = - 0.59). In the fifth study the aim was to investigate an athletic injury as a career transition through the narrative expression of successful and less successful injury experiences of a former elite handball player. The participant’s narratives made possible to identify four phases (i.e., pre-injury, injury and first reactions, diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation and consequences) in the injury transition with distinct psychological content (e.g., demands, resources, barriers, and coping strategies) relevant to each phase

An exploration of the psychometric properties of the Test of Attentional and Interpersonal Style and its ability to predict athletic injury.

Vassos, Maria Vicky, maria.vassos@gmail.com January 2009 (has links)
This thesis presents two studies that are concerned with evaluating the psychometric properties of the revised version of the Test of Attentional and Interpersonal Style (TAIS; Nideffer, 1976) - the TAIS2 (Nideffer, n.d.). The original TAIS has many psychometric weaknesses but the revised version was developed in an attempt to rectify the problems of the original. The aim of Study One was to explore the internal consistency and construct validity of the TAIS2 attention subscales. These psychometric properties were evaluated on a sample of 119 undergraduate students who completed the TAIS2 along with measures of anxiety and the

Emotionell omställning av förlorad identitet : Tio långtidsskadade nordiska elithandbollsspelares erfarenheter

Malic, Fatima, Jenny, Norkvist January 2013 (has links)

Ankle sprain - conservative versus operational treatment: A literary review / Ankle sprain - conservative versus operational treatment: A literary review

Millas, Dimitrios January 2017 (has links)
1 Abstract Title Ankle sprain, conservative versus operational treatment: A literature review Aim The main purpose of this thesis is to assess and review the efficacy of main types of conservative and surgical interventions applied on ankle sprain injuries, as also the factors that influence the clinical outcomes in patients undergoing the selected treatment procedures. Method This thesis is a literary research, reviewing articles from relevant journals and books. Information and data sources were retrieved from English, released between 1980 and 2016, using electronic databases and reference lists of articles. The following databases were searched for the highest possible amount of relevant articles, with an attempt to reduce publication and/or selection bias: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews), Web of science and Medline. Preliminary searches began at the inception of the project, and the full search was concluded in October 10th , 2016. A restriction for the type of publication (meta-analysis, systematic review, clinical trials, comparative trials, practice guidelines and case studies) was applied when allowed by the databases research tools. Results The analysis of the reviewed studies resulted that conservative treatment approaches is the main...
